Review titled fantastic
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by BEVERLEY DENISE THOMPSON - Posted on 14 May 2023
I was treated initially by wonderful paramedics and then by the minor injuries staff for a potentially dangerous leg wound. This wonderful NHS hospital has saved my life through various cancers and age related other maladies more times than I can detail here. Thank you for my life - so lucky to live in the North East. Review titled There was no mention of how painful it might be
by Nik2502 - Posted on 30 May 2023
Had to attend the Women’s Health Unit after having post menopausal bleeding. I have to say that the staff were all lovely. The doctors were knowledgable and reassuring. However, after having a transvaginal scan, I was told the womb lining was thickened and I would need a biopsy. This is where things went wrong. Although the procedure was explained, there was no mention of how painful it might be. Never in my life have I experienced pain like it. I was screaming and sobbing, begging the doctor to stop - they did and I was then offered gas and air. Too little too late. We continued the procedure as I didn’t want to have to return at a later date. It was horrific. I left sobbing and my husband was shocked at my visible distress. Surely, in this day and age, some type of sedation or pain relief would be appropriate when removing a piece from an internal organ!! Four days later, I was still in pain and tearful over the experience.

Review titled Got worse over the years
Rated 2 stars out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 28 May 2023
Got refused to be seen at children’s a&e although it was almost empty (only 1 other person inside). Never knew NHS can refuse to see people. Never had this problem before at RVI but seems service has gone downhill.

Review titled Let down by the nurses at the front desk
Rated 1 star out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 06 April 2023
I knew what was wrong with me and where I needed to be (eye casualty) however because it was late at night I was forced to go through A&E first. I had my 14 month old baby with me and when explaining my medical history and how it would make more sense for me to be at Ward 20 (the late night eye casualty) I was immediately told I didn't need to be there without even being triaged. Not a nice start. When I tried to get explain (diplomatically) that I already knew A&E cannot accomodate me I was snapped at and accused of twisting her words. I was only trying to save everyone time. So I waited and during this I asked another nurse covering the others break if she could give me a cold compress for the swelling in my eyes. She shook her head and looked at me like I had just asked her if aliens had landed. You don't do cold compresses at A&E apparently. Once again rather taken aback that I was scoffed at. I was finally seen and just had a light shone in my eye, whereas for my condition I needed eye drops to determine the inflammation, what is suspected cannot be ruled out by just flashing a light in my eye. This is why my GP sent me up herself instead of seeing me because the go is also limited of diagnosing my condition. So now I'm no further forward after GP appointment & a visit to A&E and guess where I have go, eye casualty. But now I have to take upaid time off work after paying for two taxis aswell. What an extremely unpleasant service on what seems to be triggered by a showing an immediate knowledge of my medical condition. Also was not happy about the security letting a clearly mentally limited elderly lady walking around the hospital talking to herself and asking the receptionists for jobs. No one seemed to even know why she was here.

Review titled Fantastic service
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Christopher Bromilow - Posted on 04 August 2023
On 13.4.23 I was visiting the area when I suffered a dogbite to my face. The day after I was admitted to Ward 39 at RVI and I simply couldn't believe how brilliant the service was. No waiting, very pleasant and helpful staff, I was absolutely blown away. All this was very reassuring, being away from home in Manchester. At a time when the junior doctors were on strike it was incredible. The ward staff, the porters, the staff in the operating theatre and of course the surgeon were excellent. Thank you very much.

I had to visit the Eye Emergency Department. It was extremely busy, however, all the staff I came across were patient, helpful, professional and kept people informed if there were any delays. I was very grateful and comfortable being treated so well and having all my questions answered.
