  1. Review titled SEN child disappointed with care received

Rated 3 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 15 March 2023

Came in by ambulance with my Autistic son after falling off his bike, we were seen very quickly by a Dr who said my son needed to be observed for 2 to 3 hours and if all was well we could then go home. I was shocked to then be shown to the waiting room and left there for 3 hours not one person checked on him (that’s not observing him)! My son struggles in busy places there was no seats left and the noise was making him struggle, his ipad ran out of charge, followed by my phone and I asked several times when the Dr would check him! I was concerned about a couple of things but after 3 hours with son about to meltdown and attack us I discharged him and went home for everyone’s safety, I stayed up all night watching him as it was a neck/throat injury that he had! Gutted that the NHS has come to this, there’s no ‘care’ anymore! Son is fine luckily, but what if he wasn’t!

  2. Review titled Mealtimes

    by gfsqw67 - Posted on 19 May 2023

I recently stayed in Barnstaple Hospital for a week and Exeter Hospital for a week. I cannot complain about the treatment or staff, it was wonderful. However, the one problem I experienced is around mealtimes. The staff would come in the morning and take the lunch order. However, at the time of lunch being delivered, I would either be being taken for some treatment or already be having treatment away from my bed, so not being able to eat my lunch. As well as this, there were occasions when I was not in my bed to give my teatime order, which resulted in me having a cheese sandwich for tea, and sometimes this being all I had had all day. I feel that there needs to be a system in place that accounts for inpatients having treatment at meal times as well as ensuring people have the chance to order their meals, even when they are not in their bed.

  3. Review titled I will be forever grateful for the support I've received

    by Domino56 - Posted on 17 February 2023

I was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer. I started a course of chemotherapy at the hospital in Exeter, but my treatment was provided by the Seamoor Unit at the hospital in Barnstaple, as this was much closer to my home. Chemotherapy continued, followed by a mastectomy and radiotherapy at the hospital at Exeter. I am now back at the Seamoor Unit in Barnstaple on a course of tablets that will reduce the chance of the cancer coming back. I can honestly say that in my dealings with both hospitals (and this has included various tests as well as the treatments) I have been treated with real care and professionalism. In all but a tiny handful of cases, I have also experienced true kindness and understanding of what I've been going through. Everyone has been patient and happy to answer my numerous questions, however stupid they were. My only criticism would be an apparent lack of communication between departments. This was difficult at the start of my journey, as when you're first diagnosed with cancer everything is so scary and bewildering that you really don't know if what you are being told is right or not. However, things improved once I got to understand the process. I think it has helped that I have taken control of what has happened to me as much as possible and have chased the relevant departments(s) at the hospitals if I've thought something hasn't happened when it should. That said, I've had so much support, and any issues have been dealt with really quickly. I've still got about 4 months of treatment to go, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel and life is getting back to normal. I know the NHS has its problems, but my experience has been so positive and I will be forever grateful for the support I've received.

Dear Domino56 I am so sorry that you are having to be treated for breast cancer but I am pleased that you have felt supported and have been treated with kindness. Your feedback is really important for us to know what we do well and what we can do better, and I will ensure that the breast care team and Seamoor unit are aware of your positive experience. Although you have said your care has mainly been positive, I am sorry that you have experienced some lack of communication between departments during your treatment. We always strive to do the best that we can and would welcome the opportunity to improve on this particular aspect of your care. If you would like to chat about it with myself or one of the team, please feel free to call 01271 349115 or email rduh.breastcare@nhs.net

  4. Review titled Brilliant patient care and bedside manner

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Hannah Williams - Posted on 12 February 2023

We visited today with my 8 year old daughter who had an ear infection. We were seen very promptly in ENT by a lady doctor and then the Registrar. Both were professionally brilliant and so thorough. But the reason for the review is that I want to point out how wonderful both of them were with their bedside manner. They guided and comforted my daughter, who was in considerable pain, with amazing skill and patience and general kindness. I hope you can thank them personally as a result of this review as I understand I can’t name them here. Really well done and thank you both again 🥰

  5. Review titled Beautiful people

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Lesley J Barrett - Posted on 14 February 2023

For someone who has had little to do with doctors , hospitals etc , in general , ..... I am fully comforted. Prompt , polite and kind attention. Total thoroughness. Within a few hours I had been seen by a consultant who removed a ring on a badly swollen finger. Then an x-ray , then a hand specialist. Bloods followed and a final chat with a Registrar and follow up appointment booked. Absolutely amazing and every person I interacted with were so extremely kind , gentle and thorough. Brilliant , I take my hat off to you all !!

  7. Review titled Anaesthetic Department

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Josephine Howard - Posted on 03 January 2023

I came in today (03/01/2023) for a daycare procedure with gynaecology and I just wanted to say that the anesthetiser’s were amazing! They very quickly put me at ease and were so caring and empathetic. Made me feel like I was the only patient in the hospital. I don’t think they get enough credit for what they do. Being the last faces that you see before going to sleep. I was so anxious but they were so caring and kind. Thank you so much for looking after me today!

  8. Review titled Amazing Service

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Tracy Mulligan - Posted on 03 January 2023

I had the unfortunate visit to A&E following a ladder collapse under me. From the moment the ambulance crew arrived a Dr came and sorted out who needed a X-ray and within 10 mins of arriving I had X-ray. Within 20 minutes after I was in a cubical being assessed and top up of pain relief. CT scan showed no breaks just a very bad bruise and shock. Though extremely busy staff were efficient, professional and friendly. Thank you for the amazing care in difficult times.

  9. Review titled Poor practice

Rated 2 stars out of 5

by Emma - Posted on 09 February 2023

My father was admitted taken to A&E from his care home in January after GP and district nurses refused to come and see him. He has dementia and was in severe pain with what we thought was a UTI. He was very distressed and was presenting with unusual behavior which staff put down to the dementia. We asked repeatedly for him to be given pain relief as his behavior was out of character and he was curled up with pain. It took several hours before he was seen with no pain relief. He was finally seen and admitted with a UTI, sepsis and pneumonia. Disgusting treatment all round. No excuses.

  10. Review titled A group where mental issues could be discussed

    by PERRYE711 - Posted on 28 April 2023

I had a heart attack in October 2022 and went into Barnstaple Hospital, where I received excellent care. In November 2022 I was transferred to Exeter Hospital, where I had an angioplasty which resulted in 2 stents being inserted. Once again, I received excellent care. On discharge I signed up for cardio rehab and started in March this year, again this was very good. I suffered mentally after my discharge and asked if there were any discussion groups I could attend so I could discuss my concerns with others who had had heart attacks, but unfortunately there are no such groups. Speaking to others who have had heart attacks, almost all suffered mentally and thought a talking group or groups would be a good idea. My brother had a heart attack 19 years ago, so fortunately I could discuss my concerns over the phone with him. He told me that he had had similar mental problems after his heart attack and there were no discussion groups where he lives . Discussing with him certainly eased my concerns, and I think that if there were groups where mental issues could be discussed it would put people's minds at rest.
