Review titled Excellent service @ Royal Cornwall Hospital
by Canadian - Posted on 19 April 2023
Having a hysteroscopy and endometrial biopsy is never a pleasant procedure for women. The medical staff (surgeon, consultant and anaesthetists) make me feel well cared for and very comfortable when I recently had this procedure done. I was very nervous. The staff are experts at distracting nervous patients and even had me laughing during the procedure and it was pain free. Thank you all very much.

Dear Canadian Thank you for taking the time to post feedback about your procedure. I am very glad to hear that the team were so supportive and were able to help you feel comfortable, cared for and distracted. Our teams work hard to try and minimise any worry or anxiety for their patients, and to make them feel as comfortable and informed as possible during such an invasive procedure, and they very much appreciate all feedback. I will ensure that your kind words are shared with the team. Thank you again for taking the time to share your experience, and I hope you have a positive outcome from the procedure. Review titled Proud of our Nhs

by Les Saunders - Posted on 04 March 2023
I was referred by my Gp last July for a ct scan and a urgent lung cancer clinic appointment, I was told that I didn't have cancer but I was suffering with Bronchiectasis the scan also showed I had a 6.6 cm triple a Aneurysm. I was referred to the vascular department and they were concerned about my lungs so I was referred to several different clinics all over Cornwall (Launceston Bodmin Newquay Foxhole Treliske ) at the clinic for Thoracic medicine I was told I had smoking related Copd ( I quit smoking 25 years ago ) they put me on a permanent inhaler and an Active Cycle of Breathing Techniques. The vascular Surgeons decided that open surgery was not an option so I was booked in for an Evar procedure on the 2nd March. When they took me into the theatre it was jaw dropping I thought I was on the set of a Science Fiction film. My life saving operation went well and I would like to thank everyone concerned in my journey including the care I received in the Epoc aftercare department. Well done and thank you Rch Treliske you did the Nhs proud.

Thank you for taking the time to share your story with us. I am so pleased that the operation went well and that you were impressed with the theatre set up. I am happy to know that you felt reassured by the vascular team and that you received good post op care on EPOC. EPOC is a great team and we work closely with the vascular surgeons and theatre teams. I am responding to you as the Patient Experience lead for EPOC, but I will ensure your story is shared with the teams who cared for you while you were with us. Thank you again for taking the time to share such an honest account of your experience and your continued reassurance to your friends and family that the NHS is here for anyone who needs it. Review titled The best treatment
by DickH12 - Posted on 27 March 2023
I wish to report on a recent visit to the RCHT at Treliske hospital in Truro. I had nothing but the best treatment I could expect. Every part of the procedure was explained to me. I was impressed by the curtesy, security, doctor, nursing staff and care given to me during the whole procedure. As someone in their 90's I have had previous hospital experiences and must say that this visit was among the very best. My sincere thanks go to the Doctor and nursing staff who looked after me so well.

Hello DickH12 Thank you for taking the time to leave us some feedback about your recent experience in Dermatology. We always try to make patients feel comfortable and informed, (although some wish not to know all the details) this helps you as the patient, to have a better understanding of why we ask you to take things easy for a few days. People generally feel that because they have had a procedure done with a Local Anaesthetic that its 'something and nothing' but some of the procedures we do can be quite extensive and care is needed to ensure good healing and no infections or complications for you when you get home. We hope you are healing well and continue in good health.

Review titled Exceptional team

My GP referred me to emergency surgeries with a suspected strangulated hernia. Unfortunately, I did have a very long wait (from Saturday until Tuesday) due to the way in which emergency surgeries works. However, the team of healthcare assistants and nurses were faultless, particularly the team on the emergency surgeries ward - I must mention one trainee nurse on her first placement - a natural!

Review titled I was really cared for
by xidykin74 - Posted on 30 March 2023
I felt really cared for when I went to the clinic. It felt like the team worked really well, and focused on balancing my needs and anxieties, as well as the procedure I had gone in for. Little hand touches, hot water pouches and a custard cream, as well as some humour helped the time pass quickly and I felt safe and supported throughout.

Review titled Worrying care
Rated 1 star out of 5

My 11 month old daughter was urgently referred to ENT by her paediatrician - urgent meant she should be seen within 6 weeks . This appointment was changed once and then on the day of her appointment - cancelled . She was then offered an appointment for a further 7-8 weeks time . Making her wait time 14 weeks . I said that this appointment was urgent and the response was ‘we know and we are sorry she was not seen in the urgent referral time scale but nothing we can do ‘ . I was told her appointment was cancelled due to staff sickness - which is not an excuse , as back up plans should be in place to still see these urgent referral children and babies. Very unhappy and still very worried about my daughter - can only pray it’s nothing serious when ENT do finally see her , if it’s not cancelled again .

Review titled Visiting confusion
by Wavecrest23 - Posted on 04 April 2023
I’ve been trying to maintain visits to a patient who is currently in critical care but I keep getting mixed messages about access . Initially I was allowed to visit , then not for five days , then I can visit but not without a password, a password which as I understand also allows access to the patient’s medical information. As a close friend but not related I don’t need or expect access to personal medical information but as I’ve supported this friend throughout all their treatment I do feel it is both essential and compassionate to allow for those visits to continue. Your visitor advice for critical care states allowing for two "nominated" visitors via appointment. Although I understand the sensitivity around critical care patients I really feel your advice needs clarification - for instance how do you become nominated? In this case next of kin are unable to visit because of proximity and other family responsibilities so this patient relies on local friends for face to face support & contact so re passwords can there be a distinction made between access for friends visiting as opposed to family who need updates on medical information ? Thanks

Hi Wavecrest23 I apologise for the mixed messaging you have received from us and without further details I can not comment on the reasons for this or provide you with an explanation. Unfortunately due to the critical nature of the types of patient's we care for, the restrictions on visiting from the pandemic have remained in place longer than other parts of the hospital. Our current visiting rules have been adjusted since March 16th. Every patient can have 4 nominated visitors, which is normally arranged with the next of kin. Only 2 people can visit for one hour per day and it should be the same hour for both people. This is due to the reduced space on the unit for visitors to wait. The hospital has continued to have cases of COVID present in the patient population and due to the very nature of Critical Care, we need to be vigilant for risk of outbreak. Our patient's are so vulnerable that an added infection would be detrimental to their recovery. I understand it is difficult for relatives/friends to have restricted access to their love ones during their stay with us and we want to reassure you that we regularly review our visiting policy. We have installed WhatsApp to all our patient iPads so that it is a little easier to stay in touch when you are unable to visit in person. If you would like to contact me or one of the senior team on Critical Care and discuss this further, please don't hesitate to call. I am on leave until BH Monday, but would be happy to take you call anytime that day.

Review titled Talked about in a way that’s demeaning and upsetting
by Earsforfears - Posted on 24 March 2023
Having spent ages waiting outside of the A&E department in the back of an ambulance, I was eventually transferred inside. 13 hours, unlucky for some… Wasn’t seen by anyone after I’d actually been taken in and admitted in A&E. I’d been seen previously by a nice consultant when I’d been taken in for bloods and an X-ray, before being returned to the ambulance. Hours later, I was plonked on a trolley and left, with no idea what was happening. Until they started discussing me in the middle of the unit. I say they, it was I believe, a senior nurse and a charge nurse who were deciding which patient was moved where. The senior nurse made no secret of the fact that they didn’t think I should even be in the hospital, let alone be transferred to a ward. they also spoke so loudly that everyone around must’ve wondered why I was in the hospital too, because everyone must’ve heard what they were saying. The unnecessary scoffing was out of order, let alone breaching my confidentiality by discussing me loudly enough for everyone to hear. I was actually admitted to a ward - Medical Admissions - where they were lovely. Naturally upset, I told the nurse what had happened. Shocked by the situation, they fetched the ward sister to hear the story. I stayed in hospital for 13 days. Not the length of time you’d expect someone who shouldn’t be in hospital to stay there really. Unsurprisingly, if the nurse with the loud voice and plenty to say had bothered to actually come and see me and ask what had been happening, they'd have realised that the story they were recalling to everyone with ears in the ED department was inaccurate and I did in fact need to be in the hospital. A completely appalling and unnecessary experience made me feel like I was wasting the staff's time for the whole 13 days I was there. I appreciate staff are busy and under enormous pressure when there’s a bed shortage, but nobody should be talked about in a way that’s demeaning and quite frankly upsetting and nobody should have their medical history discussed so that everyone else present can hear about it. I did not present to A&E off of my own back. I was sent in by the out of hours service who clearly made the right call, regardless of this one particular nurse's opinion. An absolutely shambolic experience that upset me unnecessarily.

Dear Earsforfears, Thank you for taking the time to share your story with us. I was sorry to see that on this occasion, it was not a positive experience for you. It must have been very frustrating waiting in the ambulance for 13 hours. I would like to assure you that patient flow is being assessed and project work in this area is currently underway to ensure waits like you have experienced are reduced when patients attend the department. I was disappointed to see that you were left with no communication as to what was happening once you were in the department and then that your case was inappropriately discussed openly in the middle of the unit. If you haven't done so already, and you would like to raise these concerns formally, you can contact our Patient and Family Experience (Complaints) team to discuss this further. I have already shared your feedback with them, so if you do decide to get in touch, you can quote this story instead of going over details again. Their contact information is below: Tel: 01872 252793 Email: rcht.patientexperience@nhs.net In the mean time, I will share your feedback with the team in the Emergency Department so they can reflect on your experience and make improvements to practice where possible. I will also forward your kind words to AMU where you found the staff to be lovely. Thank you again for taking the time to share your story with us. Best wishes, Jess
