  1. Review titled Brilliant care vs frustration with management and policy making

by Swamp - Posted on 21 November 2022

Short stay at Lincoln County Hospital, including high points, lows and frustrations. I was admitted with Pneumonia. My partner called an ambulance which arrived very promptly and I was conveyed to Lincoln (this would not normally be the A &E to attend from here. Kings Mill would be more usual). On arrival I was dealt with very well and with calm efficiency. Having arrived at A&E at quite early in the morning, I was finally transferred to Medial Emergency Assessment Unit around 13 hours later. My stay proceeded normally until the following morning when a nurse attempted to install a cannula in my left arm. She made a mistake by failing to remove the needle/guide wire so that after the, overly large, cannula was placed in the crook of my elbow I naturally bent the arm but the cannula did not bend. I was immediately in considerable pain. I believe that, when I bent my arm, the cannula punctured the other side of the vein producing a 'through and through' wound internally. When two antibiotics were administered via that cannula it was also very painful. When I pointed this out the nurse (a different nurse) replied that it didn't hurt, despite my protestations. My left arm remains extremely painful around the puncture area and above. I was later moved to another bed in a different part of the unit where I spent that night until I was again moved. This time I was moved from Medical Emergency Assessment Unit (MEAU) to Respiratory Support Unit (RSU) where I spent the next two nights. The treatment for my pneumonia was completed so far as the need for hospital admission was concerned. and I made arrangements to be collected from the hospital. The Diabetic Team had previously visited me and expressed concern at the high readings of my blood sugar. I had explained that the reason for this was that, because I was in hospital, I was not moving about or taking any form of exercise. I was told that if my blood sugars, which read over 20, reduced to somewhere between 8 and 12 I would be ok to be discharged. That afternoon I spent a little time walking up and down the ward corridor (7 or 8 times) and my blood sugar reduced to 9.4. Thus proving my point that the chief reason for my high numbers was the lack of exercise. I was then told that the Diabetic Team wanted me to be kept overnight because they considered the reading still too high. I spoke to a ward sister and pointed out that this made no sense and that I was, from that time on, effectively 'bed blocking' and the cause of that was the Diabetic Team. The following morning I was moved to another ward to make way for an emergency admission but not before the ward sister informed me that she had left messages for the Diabetic Team to attend as soon as possible. By mid morning I had seen nothing of anyone so I attended the ward reception who assured me that the Diabetic Team were aware that I had been moved and where I was. A little later, I again visited the reception and asked them to pass on to the Diabetic Team that, if they were not with me within the next 30 minutes I would be leaving the hospital. On returning to my bed I was spoken to by a doctor who asked me to remain and tried to explain some of the medical reasons why I should. Having been diabetic for over 16 years I have learned how my particular diabetes works and it does not conform to the hospitals theoretical model of what should happen. 10 minutes after this the doctor returned to say that the Diabetic Team had changed their minds and my case would be transferred to the Community Team; I was therefore free to go. Throughout my relatively short time at Lincoln County Hospital I found outstanding levels of care from the medical staff - from Student Nurses to Consultants. The mistake that was made with the cannula was just that, a mistake. The important thing about mistakes is that the people who make them take ownership of them and correct them or find a solution that will. That is what happened in this case which is a good thing, but I still have a very sore arm. The issues seem to have originated from dogmatic application of policy and believing that the strange bubble created within the hospital is relevant to 'real life' outside. I have heard and understand that 'bed blocking' is a serious issue for the NHS yet here is an example of bed blocking caused by NHS policies. This is a self inflicted injury that could undermine future pleas of pressure.

  3. Review titled Brilliant Staff

Came in after having a nasty cut to my face, was seen to very quickly and checked for a concussion, staff listened to all my details about the injury and were very calming when I was in a lot of shock. I left knowing that I was definitely okay and that everything was done to make sure I was. The nurse, doctor and all the floor staff directing my to where I needed to be are a true testament to how brilliant our NHS is.

  4. Review titled Referral to colo rectal/ endoscopy

    by Hapcg74 - Posted on 07 November 2022

I was referred by my GP after an episode of rectal bleeding and the GP thinking he could feel something in my bottom. Within 2 weeks I was triaged by a specialist nurse and offered an appointment for the flexi camera procedure the following day. On arrival at the unit, I was greeted by the receptionist and taken through for admissions paperwork by a senior nurse who was friendly and attentive. I was administered an enema and collected 15 mins later by a nurse for the procedure. She was lovely and really reassured me throughout the procedure. The person doing the procedure kept me informed throughout and was so reassuring. I was given the outcome immediately and was taken to get changed and given feedback by another nurse who was also lovely. Excellent service and care. So lucky to have our wonderful NHS and the outstanding care they provide. Thankyou

  5. Review titled United Lincolnshire Hospitals Trust so far have been faultless

    by GEC05 - Posted on 13 February 2023

Diagnosed with lymphoma whilst on follow up check ups following surgery and treatment for Merkel cell carcinoma. Extremely fast and efficient scans, diagnosis seeing a specialist and starting chemotherapy. Everything was explained in a caring and honest way. The staff in the chemotherapy units are brilliant. I think they are very obviously understaffed but are caring, look after patients and work incredibly hard. Pharmacy get drugs for patients to take home on time and always offer charts to monitor drugs at home. United Lincolnshire Hospitals Trust so far have been faultless.

  6. Review titled Lincoln Physio department

by GComments - Posted on 29 November 2022

I attended the Lincoln physiotherapy department with my daughter . The care she received was exceptional, the exercises were clearly explained and adapted as necessary to her progress (each exercise plan was also sent via email with photo instructions after each appointment ). I truly felt supported and that her progress was well monitored throughout. I am very grateful to her physiotherapist.

No-one likes to have to go and have certain scans and it can be a bit daunting, but I found myself having to visit medical physics to have a scan. All the nurses and including the gentleman were so supportive and very friendly. I was given all the information that was going to happen, and nothing was too much for these ladies and gentlemen. I applaud this department for its safe, friendly and caring staff. Thank you for being there for me and helping me when I needed it.

Yesterday, the 28th November 2022, I underwent a procedure in the Dermatology department. The team of two who carried out the removal of a small suspect growth on my left temple were both professional and friendly. It would difficult if not impossible to find a better 'team; Thank you ladies for making me feel totally at ease and totally assured that I was in exceptional hands

  10. Review titled Well done to the A&E staff at Lincoln County Hospital

    by Dean22 - Posted on 09 November 2022

On Friday afternoon, my GP sent me to the A&E after I called about having chest pains. From the moment I arrived at the A&E I was treated with kindness and care. The A&E was really busy so I was surprised to be seen within 20 minutes. I was seen by two nurses who quickly did an ECG on me and took my BP. They were kind and their bed manner was impeccable. I waited in the next room for a blood test and while I was sitting there, I was taken aback by how hard the nurses and doctors were working - running around doing their job not complaining or moaning. Each one was attentive to every patient's needs - it was just amazing to watch. They even came around to each person and offered them a free tea or coffee plus a sandwich. Well done to the A&E staff at Lincoln County Hospital - you're all doing a fantastic job.
