  1. Review titled I can not thank the team enough.

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 23 June 2024

After spending 4 long nights in hospital I can not thank the team enough in the Ocean Ward at Derriford. Everyone went above and beyond to make sure that I had everything I needed. Two of my nights I had a HCA looking after me called l, who was just the most wonderful and kind lady I have met. She would make sure we all had everything we needed, if she could do anything to help and just have a general conversation with me. It made me feel like I was just chatting to an old friend. Thank you to everyone who has helped look after me over the last few days. You have all be so truly wonderful.

Thank you for sharing this, Claire and I will ensure that this is also shared with the team. It means a lot to hear that this person’s stay was made more comfortable and less stressful by the team. Emma Collins Matron for Breast, Gynaecology and SHiP

Thank you for your website comment in which you outlined concerns regarding the care and treatment you received at the Emergency Department, Derriford Hospital. I am always disappointed to read negative comments as it means we may have let a patient down in some way. I can only apologise for the length of time you waited in the Emergency Department before being seen by a clinical member of staff. You may have seen in the national and local media that we are experiencing unprecedented demand in both the community and our hospitals. I would like to assure you that the teams at the University Hospitals Plymouth and Primary Care in Plymouth, Devon and East Cornwall are working hard with national teams to try and improve this situation. Our staff are hardworking and take patient care seriously, we as a team are constantly advocating the best for our patients but we are limited of what we can do with a system under unrelenting pressure. I apologise that our care fell short of the standard we accept in this case. I am truly sorry you have had a negative experience and have had cause to complain. Please do not hesitate to contact me in writing or by email at plh-tr.PALS@nhs.net should you wish us to investigate your concerns in more detail. Should you get in touch, please quote reference 78073 so that we can align any further contact from you with this posting. Thank you Jayde Fletcher Emergency Services Manager

  3. Review titled Incredible staff working in dire conditions.

Rated 4 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 27 June 2024

It’s clear that the NHS is woefully underfunded, but the staff are incredible. Visited A&E after 111 referred me and the waiting room was jam-packed: standing room only. Wait times were very long but clearly displayed. Triage were patient and took time to check me out properly, the pain relief came quickly, x-ray staff were excellent and explained everything, and the consultant was, again, incredibly thorough. The whole visit took 3 hours, which was a lot quicker than I expected given how busy it was. The staff are doing an incredible job despite it being really obvious that the funding simply isn’t there any more. Protect the NHS at all costs!

  4. Review titled Amazing Staff

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Dominique - Posted on 10 June 2024

I went in for an endoscopy and colonoscopy. Frightened was an understatement. I mean who wouldn't be nervous to get stuck up the butt with a 2 meter camera... the actual procedure? Man was it uncomfortable. Would I do it again? Not if I can help it! But the staff... the staff were amazing. My dread became ease and I felt truly cared for, from reception through to being discharged. Even through my shouting and uncomfortable noises during the procedure , my hand was held and I was softly talked through it. So thank you to the endoscopy team ! You guys are awesome !

Thank you for your comments regarding your recent procedure in Endoscopy. As you describe, they are often one of those procedures that nobody looks forward to and can be very worrying for patients. I am glad that you found all of the staff amazing and they helped to make a difficult time a little easier for you. Mel Williams Senior Sister Endoscopy

  5. Review titled Waiting list / no real help for people with mental health problems

by Ian - Posted on 27 June 2024

The NHS is always say they want to help people with Mental health issues but there doesn’t seem to be anyone to help us get through the waiting list times for the actual operation. Like most people I struggle day to day with the pain. I don’t want to jump the list but & all I’m asking for is for a rough date to get me through the waiting period. All I seem to get is a generic or AI response “You are on the waiting list” Even though I have stated that I’m struggling mentally several times no one passes the information on to different departments to check on me (Is he really OK & how can we help him etc). All I’m after is proper reassurance & a date to fix my mind on. (Why aren’t there more transparency with the lists) I don’t think that’s really too much to ask. My pain has been going on for 7 years now & no one I have messaged seems to really care or want to help me. I’m sure I’m not the only one.

  6. Review titled Great Staff, let down by poor infrastrucure and cleanliness

Rated 5 stars out of 5

    by Paul S - Posted on 28 May 2024

Had to attend Accident and Emergency unexpectedly (on a Bank Holiday afternoon) due to an extremely painful hip. The Staff were fantastic, everyone I came into contact with was very kind, patient and considerate. The Dept however, is in a poor state throughout, paintwork is damaged and the floor looks like it hasn’t been cleaned for a long time. Not helped by litter strewn throughout the room. I never saw a cleaner (or anyone dealing with the litter) in the 2 and a half hours I was waiting for treatment. I would recommend cleaners/managers frequently visit in order to maintain an acceptable standard. There appears to be a shortage of bins as well, which doesn’t help. In addition the Gents toilet was in a very poor state of cleanliness, with a door lock which has been badly fitted and is difficult to operate. Overall I was grateful to the Hospital for receiving great and professional care from the Emergency Practitioner Nurse (who was from Hull/Leeds) but the overall care I received was let down by the poor material standard of the Department.

Rated 5 stars out of 5

Was admitted after a fall where i sustained a badly cut arm and a cut eye. Liskeard dressed my arm. However because i take strong blood thinners sent me to Derriford in case I had a bleed to the brain. I had a CT Scan, an ECG, 2 X-Rays and three blood tests. Each section were very friendly, very professional, and very reassuring and helpful. A huge thankyou to all who treated me

  8. Review titled Amazingly committed and friendly, kind people

Rated 4 stars out of 5

by Nic - Posted on 15 May 2024

Although waiting times are extraordinarily long and patients are in pain and staff are stretched, the staff remained alert, kind, generous and very effective and skilled in what they do. I feel grateful to have had help and advice and reassurance in difficult circumstances and with immediate tests plus results all alleviating the years and years of pain and difficulty with other medical staff. A&E staff were amazing and should be better supported by our political and NHS (nearing private)system.

  9. Review titled Chestnut unit

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Patient - Posted on 26 May 2024

Had a scan done here and was absolutely shocked at the running of waiting room 2. HCAs that work there are serious unprofessional, I have never come across this before and I have had a lot of appointments across the board. Seemed like they were on a jolly, all sat around chatting loudly belching and swearing. I just sat there in total shock, I could have been in a pub on a Saturday night! The admission staff at the door were great along with the lady's who did my scan but serious let down by their HCAs.

I am very sorry for the experience you have had. We pride ourselves with being professional and outstanding in our delivery of care in the Chestnut Unit. I am shocked and saddened by your comment and want to reassure you that we are taking it seriously. All of the staff will be spoken to and will be reminded about their conduct when working to represent the Chestnut Unit and UHP as a whole. This is not acceptable and measures will be taken to ensure nobody has to have the same experience. Please accept my sincere apologies, thank you for taking the time to email and bring this to my attention. Tracey Whittingham Unit Manager Chestnut Urology Investigation Unit

  10. Review titled compassionate staff

Rated 4 stars out of 5

by Matt - Posted on 15 May 2024

I had to accompany my partner to the a&e department so she could be treated for ongoing chest pain, breathing difficulties and a persistent 5-week cough that our gp surgery has been unable to effectively address. The a&e staff, from blood pressure, blood-taking and ecg, through to nurses and the doctor who consulted with my partner, were examplary. They were kind, helpful and calm. The doctor in particular, listened to my partner, understood her concerns, spoke to her as an equal, didn't challenge or dismiss her about specifics of her condition (Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome). After assessing the blood and ecg results, he ordered a chest x-ray, in order to further investigate the situation, and while waiting for the results, was able to access some information about the common occurance of respiratory symptoms in ehlers-danlos patients - symptoms which match exactly the symptoms my partner is suffering. This allowed him to confirm that the respiratory issues she's having may in fact be due to the ehlers-danlos, and he was open to this as a possibility. He is one of very few clinicians who has been willing to discuss the broader issues around ehlers-danlos with my partner. Many at our gp surgery and other specialists/consultants have been at best neutral, at worst dismissive or ignorant of the overall ehlers-danlos picture. I'd like to commend the doctor on his care, compassion, willingness to listen during this visit. In spite of the lateness (we were in the surgery from 18:30 until 01:15), and the busy conditions in the waiting room, the staff remained friendly and attentive.
