  1. Review titled Labour and delivery/maternity unit

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Sara - Posted on 13 April 2023

I gave birth last week in the labour and delivery unit at The Cumberland infirmary and it changed my view on staying in hospital. I was very anxious having never been in hospital before for more than just an ultrasound. The maternity/labour and delivery team was absolutely amazing and made both me and my partner feel so very reassured and well taken care of. It was a hard long labour process but because of the care and kindness of all the staff and their empathy towards our situation we were made to feel calm and empowered at such a stressful time. We really felt that the team had our best interest and clearly explained everything that was happening during our labour and birth and talked us through options and choices we had which made us feel in control of the whole experience. The support after was equally kind and dignified. Our hospital stay is an experience we both look back on extremely positive and I can’t thank the department enough for that.

  2. Review titled Wonderful treatment

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Geraldine Robson - Posted on 02 June 2023

I recently needed treatment at the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle. I attended my GP and was given an 2 week urgent referral to the Gynaecology Dept. My Out Patient appointment was efficient, on time and extremely well managed. From there I was referred for a surgical procedure which was performed as a day case. The whole experience from entering the Elective Care Suite, my trip to the operating theatre and my period of recovery was exceptional. All staff were friendly but professional, knowledgeable, and very caring. They all made the whole experience much less traumatic than it could have been. The Gynaeology Department is run exceptionally well and I would not hesitate to recommend it. Thank you to all for such wonderful care.

  3. Review titled Absolutely fantastic staff

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Lydia - Posted on 23 April 2023

I attended the acute medical unit via an emergency GP referral. All staff could not have been more brilliant, from the ladies at reception on arrival to the medical staff. I was given my own room immediately as I was struggling with bright lights- I was constantly updated with the doctors thoughts and assessments as well as being provided with information on next steps and timings. I was admitted on to larch ward as I had meningitis and the staff there were fantastic. I was treated with compassion and care. Every effort was taken to make me as comfortable as possible. Everywhere was very clean and tidy. The staff were all cheery and friendly. I cannot overstate how fantastic the staff are. On discharge, the doctor came to visit me and walked me through what had happened whilst at the hospital, which I really appreciated. Thank you so much. You all work so hard, and I am so grateful for your care, attention and expertise.

Rated 5 stars out of 5

Having had accident on the evening of Wednesday 13 whilst on holiday in Cumbria, I had excellent response from the ambulance service who delivered me to the Carlisle accident and emergency unit Having waited my turn to be seen it was all go! Staff extremely efficient and friendly. They realigned my 3x fractured ankle and put it in a temporary cast allowing me to return home down south to have the required surgery. Excellent service! Many thanks to all on duty that night and following morning.

  5. Review titled Excellent ultrasound

Rated 4 stars out of 5

    by M Anderson - Posted on 12 March 2023

Just wanted to flag the excellent Ultrasound service I had on Sunday 12th March at 8am. I’ve had many an ultrasound during the last 10 year of illness, but the staff member made this the best experience ever. He was super knowledgeable, took me through the scan as it was progressing so I could see what he was reviewing & was both professional & put me at ease. Probably my best Ultrasound experience to date so wanted to feedback the great service, especially during an 8am Sunday appointment.

  6. Review titled Endoscopy Service Excellent

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Fred Ruddick - Posted on 15 February 2023

Attended today feeling a bit anxious, however from beginning to end the staff were organised, professional and caring. The system flowed effortlessly with each staff member knowing their role, and a clear sense of teamwork. All the staff I encountered explained procedures in understandable terms and were reassuring. The consultant and his team helped me through the procedure in a compassionate manner, supportive when it was a bit challenging. The student nurse on duty was also impressive in her relationships with patients, and a credit to the unit, and a product of qualified staff guidance. Please let the endoscopy team have a copy of this communication as NHS staff deserve positive feedback during such challenging times. Regards Fred Ruddick

I brought my elderly mother into A and E after she had fallen downstairs. She was assessed and treated within 3 hours and all of the staff were exceptionally kind to her and very professional in their approach. Very impressed overall with my mother's treatment.

  8. Review titled Great experience

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Andrew James Johnstone - Posted on 12 February 2023

Attended day surgery unit Saturday 11th February for gallbladder removal. Arrived in unit 8am they checked blood pressure etc went through paperwork I was third gallbladder on the list was taken to theatre upstairs around 9.35am. Got changed into my gown out belongings in a bag Dr inserted a cannula taken into theatre ,very busy day literally one in and one out the previous patient was still in theatre when I was getting changed. Taken into theatre they re check the paperwork name ,allergies type of operation , permission etc etc. Anaesthetist says lie on table relax ,oxygen mask on ,injection of anaesthetic in the hand Dr says don't worry we'll take.....and that was all I heard ,started coming round in the recovery room an hour or so later. Plenty staff around I was pretty fuzzy for a few minutes then regained proper consciousness stayed there 15 minutes or so . They check blood pressure asked if I was in pain put dressings on my wounds Taken on trolley back to the day surgery arrival on ground floor stayed on the trolley maybe 20 minutes given some toast and a coffee. Then they get you out the trolley dressed and into a chair . They get you to go to the bathroom as you have to be able to pee before you can go home. Took blood pressure again got pain medication to take home final bits of paperwork . They said I could call my wife to come and collect me around 1.30pm ,she was just finishing work and collected me around 2.45pm. Day after now I'm a bit tender but loads of folks worse off than me. I'm very grateful to all the staff involved in my care and can't praise or thank them enough. I have no doubt others will have had different experiences but I can only comment for myself. Thanks again to all. Andrew Johnstone

  9. Review titled Excellent service from NHS

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Peter Cartmell - Posted on 23 January 2023

This was my first time in hospital. The pre assessment appointment was very efficient. The videos on NHS Lifebox were very informative and useful. On the morning of the surgery I was invited in early due to a cancellation. The whole process was well organised and efficient. All staff were welcoming and friendly. My operation was a gall bladder removal by key hole surgery. I also had issues with a hernia and I was delighted when told that they had also "repaired" my hernia. They and I was delighted to have 2 opertions in 1. We live approx 1.5 hours away from the hospital. The staff kept in contact with my wife who was "killing time" in Carlisle with progress and time I would be released. I know I should not include names but my operation took place at the Elective Care Suite/theatre on the 21/01/2023.

I have been having treatment at the Cumberland Infirmary for an ongoing eye problem since the beginning of December. Every single member of the department I have come into contact with since my first visit has been supportive, caring and professional. The whole ophthalmology team obviously work well with each other - every one of them is reassuring, friendly, efficient and demonstrate great teamwork. Huge thanks to them all…
