I was contacted at home because my blood results where very low . Told to go to hospital with a bag was told I was not to drive myself & needed a blood transfusion and would be admitted. Asked could I go to my local hospital “no” I was very poorly .when I arrived at 8pm nobody new anything about my case . Seen in triage nurse was rude, waited another 3hrs to have a line put in finally seen at 6am after 8hrs . Doctor was very good could not understand why I was not allowed to be at my local hospital. The nurse who contacted me from laboratory needs better training my journey to Whiston hospital was not necessary a very unpleasant anxious wait. Never experienced conditions so bad at a hospital

  3. Review titled Long waiting time and no privacy

by wooder - Posted on 27 April 2023

My wife was referred to Whiston A&E for a heart related problem. We arrived at the dept at 2.05 pm and during the first three hours waiting she had an ECG test and a blood test, each of which took a few minutes. We then waited another four hours and twenty minutes before the results were analysed and she was told she could go home. We left at 9.25 pm a total of seven hours twenty minutes later. Although the medical care was good, I felt the waiting time was excessive and privacy was non-existent. The waiting room was mostly full all the time with patients turning up bleeding from injuries, being sick, crying, etc. and you could hear clearly patients being asked at the checking in desk what the ailments were, including one person who had to describe anal bleeding in full earshot of everybody nearby. I last attended Whiston A&E about two years ago with a broken leg and it was exactly the same then. Surely someone in authority can see that this is not right and make arrangements to improve the situation to make the experience better for the patients who have to endure such long waiting times.

  4. Review titled Fabulous treatment

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Nadine Evans - Posted on 11 May 2023

My aged Father had a horrific accident involving his hand and a circular saw. The treatment he received at Whiston has been superb. All the staff from the Consultants to receptionists to the nurses and follow up staff have been amazing. I cannot thank these professionals enough for their care towards my Father. This includes the lady who brings him tea, the cleaners and everyone. He is of poor hearing and 84 years old and a kindly word or even a smile means so much when you are traumatised and have lost digits. Thank you !

  5. Review titled Excellent experience

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Beverley - Posted on 28 April 2023

I was sent to 1b via my GP. From the minute I arrived to going home all staff were professionally, courteous and friendly. I came in needing support with my Asthma. Tests were completed and a careplan was put in place. Medication given and my normal Asthma routine changed as I was needing more assistance control my symptoms. Each step throughout my time on the ward was discussed and a plan was also put in place for my ongoing care. Thank you for helping when I felt most vulnerable and poorly.

  6. Review titled Exemplary care

    by Alexis1969 - Posted on 25 April 2023

As a former midwife and a current paediatric physiotherapist it's not often I get to experience care from the other side. My daughter gave birth in the bathroom of ward 2E yesterday and I need to express my gratitude. The care provided not only for my daughter but for the whole family was exemplary. Each member of the staff from the midwives to the domestic provided professional and heartfelt support. They made me proud to be a part of the NHS and are a credit to Whiston hospital, if the NHS need a benchmark then it is the care given on ward 2E at Whiston hospital.

  8. Review titled Frustrating

Rated 1 star out of 5

My step dad is in the a&e department right now which he has been since Sunday. He has terminal cancer, COPD and has had cancer previously. He was advised to be taken to a&e by a first response paramedic as he has been vomiting since Saturday and although there have been some tests done and he spent the first night in a chair in his condition, we are no further along and he is still vomiting and is still on a&e ward. My goodness for a man to be in this condition a limited time left to live please give him his dignity by atleast finding him a bed on a ward for gods sake. No one seems to care that he is still there!!!! And there is no one to address this with as PALS take days to even look at it! this is scary to be in such need and not be prioritised when you have a terminal Illness. please please help him. I’m in Australia so cannot ask in person. 7th March 2023 Since I wrote the above he has been moved from a&e to a corridor can you believe! I’m just broken hearted that he has gone even further down in priority. Jeez I do feel for the staff too but my goodness this government need to sort it out!!! Social care packaging being available to discharge patients to would go a long way to freeing up beds on wards for goodness sake. So unbelievably sad…..

  9. Review titled Highest Level of Maternity Care

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Conor and Jen O’Dea - Posted on 09 March 2023

I just wanted to make sure the amazing midwife’s who delivered our little girl on the evening of 4/3/23 get all the praise in the world. It was a long 20 hour Labour but each and every midwife we dealt with throughout the long day had the highest levels of compassion, empathy and care. During the pregnancy as well we had an amazing community midwife. The biggest thing for us that we loved about everyone’s care on the day and our community midwife was that every time we discussed options we never felt pressured to choose one. Each time we had the evidence provided to us and we’re allowed time to think and make a decision rather than feeling forced to choose one path which was massive for us. We came back to the hospital about 11:30am Saturday morning after seeing a lovely midwife around 4am on the triage unit when the waters had broke. Same again our midwife at 11:30am was empathetic and kind and helped us for a couple of hours checking in constantly before we moved to a private room on the maternity ward. During these 2 hours we had a new midwife who again was constantly checking in to see we were okay and once my partner had reached active labour helped us carry all our stuff (house and the kitchen sink) to the midwife led unit for the end goal. This started around 4pm and my partner wouldn’t give birth until just past half 10. Our first midwife was again empathetic, kind and was sharing a laugh and a joke with us which helped create a calm atmosphere and chilled me, my partner and her mum out. Unfortunately by 9pm her shift ended and baby still wasn’t quite here. We were a bit anxious of a change over due to the connection we’d made but should never have been worried as the night shift midwife accompanied by a first year student midwife shared the same levels of care, compassion and kindness we had seen all day. We were shocked after the birth to find out the student midwife was only a 1st year as from her knowledge and demeanour throughout the whole process you’d have thought she had been doing the job for years. Definitely a future lead midwife in the making. Once our little girl had arrived and it was time for my partner to move to the ward for the evening the porter who then arrived was also lovely. Both midwife’s and the porter helped us carry our stuff over to the ward again and couldn’t do enough for us. The part that tops it off for us is the midwife who’d been with us on the day shift and had to finish at 9pm was back on shift on Sunday morning. She made time to come and see us and meet our little girl which she had been so crucial in delivering. Her calm demeanour throughout had made a really long and worrying day much easier than we thought it would ever be. We have decided to leave our names on the review as we really want this to get back to all the staff who helped us if possible. It’s so often negative feedback comes back but positive doesn’t. If you need to check my partners file for staff names feel free.

  10. Review titled Caring Staff throughout the hospital

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 15 February 2023

My mum was rushed into hospital, the ambulance arrived within the time scale stated on the phone. A & E was quite busy but the staff remained helpful, caring and cheerful. From getting into the ambulance and onto a ward all within 5 hours. Excellent care from both wards 4 A & 4 B, also the lovely cleaners and the lovely people who brought her meals, which she said were beautiful. With the excellent care mum was receiving this made the family reassured too. Thank you again N H S especially staff at Whiston, I don't know what we would do without you.
