Review titled Staff were pleasant, efficient and informative
by Stirling56 - Posted on 20 July 2023
I visited York Hospital recently for a routine mammogram appointment at 10 35 am. I arrived 10 minutes early and was seen straight away and finished by my appointment time. I then needed a blood test and chest x-ray which do not need appointments. For each procedure I waited less than 10 minutes and was out of the hospital 45 minutes after arriving. In each department staff were pleasant, efficient and informative. I see many complaints about York Hospital so felt it was necessary to give praise for the experience I had on my recent visit.

Thank you for your kind words regarding the care you received from the Breast Screening Unit at York Hospital. It is heartening to know that all you were treated with such kindness and encouragement during your appointment. Our staff work hard to ensure their patients receive the highest standard of care, and we appreciate your positive remarks about the treatment you received from all the clinical staff involved in your care. I have passed on your comments to the staff involved, which I am sure they will be very pleased to read. Thank you for taking the time to write to us to express your gratitude. We value and appreciate feedback from our patients and relatives and thank you once again for sharing your experience with me.

Having forgotten vital medical supplies while here on holiday, I phoned York hospital and the stoma nurse specialist was able to supply me with what I needed in a quick and courteous manner. I was very impressed with this hospital. Thank you for making my emergency problem disappear allowing me to enjoy my holiday here.

Review titled Abandon hope all ye who enter
Rated 3 stars out of 5
by Hilary - Posted on 18 July 2024
Waited three and a half years for appointment following back surgery. Nine months after initial consultation I received injections to numb the pain in my back - terrific for seven weeks. I was then told I’d need to wait maybe six months for further treatment - that’s a year ago now, apparently I’d become lost in the system so received an appointment which took me right back to the beginning. I can’t fault the staff but I so wish the staff would not give false hope as I’m at the end of my tether now!!!!!! I have appointments but 45 minutes is ‘wasted’ filling forms then no time left to discuss why I was invited to yet another appointment. Years of chronic pain, putting on a brave face, has taken its toll.

Review titled Blood test
by Kateisobel - Posted on 12 July 2023
I have put off getting a blood test for years because I am prone to fainting and scared of needles. I was really pulling my hair out about it, but I used numbing cream the morning of and then went to a walk in appointment and York Hospital. The phlebotomist I had was so lovely and reassuring, she let me used the child’s buzzy bee to help with the pain too and I didn’t even feel the needle go in. Overall such a surprisingly comforting experience that I feel able to go on my own now, and with confidence!

Review titled Terrible working conditions
Rated 1 star out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 20 June 2023
After ringing 111 they told me to head to the urgent care at York and they had put me in for an appointment so I didn't have to go wait in a+e I arrived just after 8pm to be told by the receptionist in urgent care that they aren't taking anymore patients as it was a 4 hour wait and they close at midnight so she told me to go to a+e. Got to a+e to be told it was an 8hour wait to see a Dr but I could just wait to see the triage nurse and see if they recommend that I wait for the Dr so I waited for the nurse. The waiting area was appalling, it was dirty, people were lying on the floor, the triage nurse wasn't even in a room she was taking people into some sort of hallway and using a yellow medical waste bin as a table and chair it was utter mayhem! After about 2 and a half hours I was finally seen by the nurse but they seemed to be in such a rush to get through people that I barely even got chance to speak then they said they weren't confident to give me advise on my injury and to head to the minor injury waiting area to been seen by a Dr. Well that was the worst waiting area I have ever seen there was rubbish all over the place, the most uncomfortable chairs, one poor lad was sat on his own vomiting in the corner for ages! After sitting there for around another 3 hours (at this point it was around 2am) one nurse came in and said it was going to be at least another 8 hour wait depending on any incoming emergency. So by this point I'd had enough and decided to wait in pain at home till my own GP opened which is a shorter waiting time to what it would be to wait and see the Dr in there. This is nothing against the staff they were polite and friendly and apologetic but the conditions in which they have to work in are utterly disgusting. I'm not surprised they were so short staffed if that's how they are expected to work. Will not be going there again!

Review titled Caring & Empathetic
Rated 5 stars out of 5

My husband had numerous appointments in the last 5 months. The consultant was excellent, his manner so professional and caring. Taking time to clearly explain everything and leaving us with optimism and gratitude that the pressure of working within the NHS never impacted the consultation. Sadly he passed away recently, after a terminal diagnosis, but thankyou to all the hardworking staff of the Oral & Maxillofacial Dept.

Review titled 25 hours in a&e
Rated 3 stars out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 03 May 2023
I was directed to a&e around 8pm on a Tuesday evening following a call to 111. On arrival the department already looked busy and overworked but unfortunately receptionist staff were rude and unwelcoming. I was being tested for Meningitis and was very sensitive to bright lights but they wouldn’t accommodate me at all. I would have no issue with this but for the fact I waited 8 hours to be seen and was refused access to a discarded gurney in a dark corner of a corridor. It wasn’t used once in the 8 hours. I only followed up the request once and the receptionist/nurse was rude in her response, making reference to the fact I’d only been there 4 hours and 1 minute. After being seen, I had a blood test and a ct scan and they put an a IV drip in me, all very swift. However none of the results were run over with me (even when they did have them). I was later told I needed a lumbar puncture, with still no review of previous tests. They took me to “sdec” and here I stayed for 4 hours with no interaction from staff, except for 1 nurse who was very welcoming and took my vitals on arrival. But that was all. After the 4 hours I then asked at reception what was actually happening since nobody had interacted with me on this ward. Eventually doctors arrived and I explained to them that for the previous 18 hours I’d had tests but nothing reviewed with me and no rationale shared as to why I needed a lumbar puncture. The doctors were very apologetic and gave an excellent explanation of why they felt the lumbar puncture was needed. We went ahead and this procedure was very quick with the doctors being very comforting all the way though. I was told they’d check back with me in approx 2 hours. I waited 4 and decided to approach reception twice before I was told the results were actually on the system and they’d get a Gp to go through them with me. Again, this was followed by another 3 hour wait. In summary; tests and procedures were all excellent. Receptionists and delegation was very poor. I felt like I was always someone else’s concern and nobody actually took responsibility for me as a patient.

Review titled Shambolic
Rated 2 stars out of 5

My wife broke her wrist in Spain on 14th May, the treatment in Spain was marvellous that straighten it and put a part cast on due to the swelling, and strapped it up and put it in a sling so she was comfortable ,as she was flighting home the next day ,and told her it will need a full cast on or even some surgery ,and Togo to her local hospital as soon as she got home ,the treatment in Spain from entering hospital to leaving took 2hrs 30 mins. excellent ,when arriving home the next day we went to York A&E , waited 2hrs saw a consultant ,told him what happened , gave him the x rays of the break and xrays after it had been re set, he was impressed by the work the Spanish doctor had done, and sent us for another e X Ray , no problem. After taking a look at the new x Ray. he said it was still fine and inplace and he couldn't do anything, and said he would pass it on to the fracture clinic who would be in touch the next day. Waited for a phone call that didn't come so we rang them, was told to come to the orthopedic dept on the Friday the 19th 5 days after the original break,so we arrived and saw the consultant, who after humming and Arring, decides that he will leave it another week ? , then decide what to do , so another appointment was made for the 26th of May , 12 days after the original accident? My wife has been in pain. and taking pain killers for 12 days. Could someone please explain to me why it took so long , the consultant in Spain said if she had been in Spain longer he would have treated and carried out the correction as a matter of urgency , the treatment between the 2 hospitals was chalk and cheese, the great NHS is broken, and is far from the world leading the politicians would like you to think, but after experiencing 1st hand , the realisation quickly dawns, that is far from the reality ,its bordering on to a 3rd world system, and l am not the only one that has experienced this there will be thousands, sadly it is where we are ,and nothing will change and l only hope it doesn't get any worse or we are all in trouble. Sorry for having to make a complaint, but the fact s speak for them selves.

I went to York Hospital to have my gallbladder out and had never had an operation before. I was nervous but needn’t have been as the staff were really helpful from the moment I walked in and none of it was scary at all. Everybody was lovely and friendly so I just wanted to thank everyone involved.

Review titled Pointless

Referred by 111 and after an initial assessment and some tests I was told it should be less than two hours to see the doctor. Three and a half hours later in the major unit we were told that it was likely to be another 4.5hrs minimum, but that would probably go up as more urgent cases would be likely to come in and there was only one qualified nurse in the area. As my pain was becoming unbearable due to the waiting conditions (I needed to lie down) and I had inferred that I was not in immediate mortal risk I decided to go home and try to treat myself where I was more comfortable. It would have been good to have a grown up conversation with someone about my options and the risks, but I was simply told it's up to you. I also don't understand why it is not possible to go home and come back when the waiting time is so long, so that patients can be more comfortable and the conditions are better for the remaining patients. A functioning GP system would also be useful in reducing the numbers at A&E in the first place.
