I had my left eye cataract done December last year. Still waiting for my right eye appointment. I was told it would be done 6 weeks after my left eye. Here we are 6 months on and not heard a dickey bird!!!!

  2. Review titled Superb attention at Opthalmology Department

Rated 5 stars out of 5

I have been going to this department at the Mandeville Wing for the past year for glaucoma & cataract treatment. The glaucoma team in particular are brilliant and if you were going somewhere privately in my opinion you could not receive better treatment. Communication with the department is also very efficient. I am very grateful for all their help from consultants to nursing staff.

  3. Review titled Stoke Mandeville A&E

    by Paul2208 - Posted on 14 November 2022

Recently I spent over 9 1/2 hours at a&e at Stoke Mandeville with my wife, we got there at 6.15am we left at 3.55pm what I saw and experienced there was nothing short of poor medical care. An 85-year-old woman, on her own, who had been there for over 14 hours. A young couple with a baby in the blanket who were frantic and could not get any attention for half an hour because the receptionist had to go on their break, they didn’t know where to go or what to do, I will never forget the look of total desperation on their faces. A woman clearly in her 70s with, I suspect, a broken arm just left for hours crying with pain until members of the public, having had enough, demanded her attention. Unbelievably three ambulance crew spending nine hours with one individual just playing on their mobile phones. The list of grotesque inefficacies goes on and on. I have a suggestion for anybody in management at Stoke Mandeville just go and spend nine hours in a&e and see the mess for yourself. You ought to be ashamed of yourselves. By the way one other thing, I lost count of the amount of nhs staff just wondering round with takeaway coffee cups chatting and from what I could see basically achieving nothing, hour after hour, at one point as frustration set in, I was driven by desire to ask them what they actually do – all paid, what a waste of money. After 9 1/2 hours I finally left, with my wife, who had gone blind in one eye with not the slightest indication of what the problem was and the simple instruction to attend her gp on Monday, which of course you can’t do because you can’t get an appointment. My advice would be stop reading reviews and go and sit in a&e. Go see for yourself. The above is a one hundred percent account of what’s going on – in my opinion it’s not money, its management, or total lack of it.

  4. Review titled Terrible Service

    by Heath1974 - Posted on 04 November 2022

Why do people have to explain their problems and where they are experiencing pain in their stomach to the receptionist on the phone when they have been told by the patient that they have Diverticulitis and it shows that on their medical file? This is not acceptable. Why can people not get an appointment straight away for something like this that is urgent?

  5. Review titled Appalling phone service

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Neil McCrorie - Posted on 28 November 2022

I have been refered to the urology deprtment on 22.9.22 and on my referal it states I will receive a date for my appointment by 17 November, if not, contact the urology depertment. I hav been trying all morning to speak to someone and all I get is transfered to a voicemailservice. How on earth can I sort out my appointment if I can't speak to someone. I tired deiffernt numbers at Stoke Manderville but all I get is voicemail services. It is impossible to speak to anyone. This service is absolutley disgraceful. Stop using the excuses and employ people to deal with the public in a compassionate and sympathetic manner.

  6. Review titled Faultless service

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Roger Seldon - Posted on 23 November 2022

I was seen in eye casualty, the eye clinic, and in the theatre. It took just 5 working days from my initial visit to completion of treatment. All of the staff I met were kind thoughtful and very thorough. Diagnosis was checked by a senior colleague. At each stage the diagnosis and treatment was explained in full, and questions answered. Excellent.

  7. Review titled Attendance at A&E

    by conditionerpf94 - Posted on 01 December 2022

Today I had to attend A&E with my 17-year-old daughter, and I just wanted to say thank you! Although we were there for over 8 hours and need to return tomorrow for further testing, I can't fault the service we received. The transition from being seen by the triage nurse, to tests being carried out by the paramedic, and finally being seeing by the different doctors and being squeezed in for an MRI was faultless. We were kept well informed and being offered a cup of tea by a lovely nurse which I declined as I could see she was busy just showed how caring all the staff were. We could see how busy the department was, but everyone was lovely and polite and we witnessed the kindness all staff members have to patients. I can't thank you enough for making a worry day bearable.

  8. Review titled It’s not money, its management, or total lack of it.

5th November - I Spent over 9 1/2 hours at a&e at Stoke Mandeville with my wife, we got there at 6.15am we left at 3.55pm what I saw and experienced there was nothing short of third world medical care. An 85-year-old woman, on her own, who had been there for over 14 hours. A young couple with a baby in the blanket who were frantic and could not get any attention for half an hour because the receptionist had to go on her break, they didn’t know where to go or what to do, I will never forget the look of total desperation on their faces. You ought to be ashamed of yourselves, and don’t tell me its lack of money – its bad management, the money waste there is as bad as the poor medical treatment. As a country we ought to be ashamed of ourselves. By the way one other thing, I lost count of the amount of nhs staff just wondering round with takeaway coffee cups chatting and basically achieving nothing, hour after hour, at one point as frustration set in, I was driven by desire to ask them what they actually do – all paid, what a waste of money. My advice would be stop reading reviews and go and sit in a&e. Go see for yourself. One final point if you call yourself management, in the nhs Stoke Mandeville, then you should be ashamed of yourself that’s the plain simple truth. Stop hiding. It’s a mess. A big mess. And it’s your job to sort it out. Which I’m not hopeful you ever will. The above is a one hundred percent account of what’s going on – it’s not money, its management, or total lack of it.

  9. Review titled Lack of sensitivity

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 26 November 2022

After visiting A&E the previous day due to a suspected miscarriage, I was referred to the surgical assessment unit the following morning for an ultrasound. Following the scan and learning the most devastating news we were asked to go back to the communal waiting area to await the doctor to see us. This was absolutely heartbreaking to sit alongside pregnant people while the news we had lost our baby was so fresh and raw. When I couldn’t cope any longer, we asked the reception if there was some way we could go and grieve in private but was told the doctor would see us as soon as possible. I fell apart in my husbands arms in the middle of the corridor in front of reception as there was nowhere for us to go, with other patients and staff going about their business around us. I’d never felt so exposed. Eventually one nurse came over and told us there was an empty room me and my husband could sit and wait in together. This kindness was an absolute gift for us and we are grateful for that one sensitive nurse who saw we needed help and showed compassion. The worst experience imaginable was made even worse by the lack of sensitivity of the majority of the hospital staff and the fact there was no special procedure for those who have experienced miscarriage. I was shocked that no one seemed to know what to do in that situation or how to help. My view is that there should be a procedure for anyone who experiences miscarriage so no one has to sit and wait in a public space dealing with their loss while waiting for a doctor to talk about what’s already been confirmed at the scan. At the very least there should be somewhere to go, or someone immediately available to speak to at the time of the ultrasound so all the facts are clear and explained without the agonising wait afterwards. Ultimately the one act of kindness from one nurse was the only saving grace of our experience at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. I hope my comments are taken on board for the next woman who experiences a miscarriage so she doesn’t have to go through what we did this time. Do better Stoke Mandeville.

  10. Review titled No doctors in paediatrics A&E

Rated 2 stars out of 5

by DMP - Posted on 14 October 2022

Took my daughter to the A&E after being referred by 111, due to a very high temperature and accelerated breathing. Stayed there for 8h and did not see a doctor, been told there were no doctors in Paediatrics, and if a Doctor from other areas became available, they'd pop in to see 1 or 2 patients at time. The waiting room was packed, people were there for +10h and waiting to be seen for the first time by a doctor. I ended up getting my daughter "self discharged" as I'm fortunate enough my daughter's condition improved overnight (not because anything the hospital did anyway, but due to my own care). Very disappointing and worrying to see what the NHS services are becoming.
