  1. Review titled Outstanding care received

    by CEA#Ankle - Posted on 15 December 2023

Fractured my ankle whilst out of my local area. I attended AE at Stoke Mandeville hospital. I was triaged almost immediately on arrival, sent directly for X-ray, processed through X-ray within 15 minutes and back in AE where I was splinted, taught to use crutches and discharged to await a follow up with fracture clinic. My AE experience took approx. 2 hours and that was mainly awaiting blood results. The staff were helpful, clear in communication and made me feel at ease and well cared for. Within 72 hours of being discharged I had been contacted by the fracture clinic and appointment booked for the same week. I arrived at fracture clinic to be greeted by friendly staff, sent for X-ray and reviewed and spoken to a consultant. My whole clinic appointment including X-rays was 1hr and 10 minutes. I left with a plan for emergency surgery and was informed I would be called in 24-48 hours. I received a call that evening to discuss my surgery, asked to remain NBM from midnight and informed I would be contacted between 8-9am the following morning if surgery was likely that day. I was called the following morning at 830am as promised where I attended the day surgery department for ORIF of the ankle. The staff were very friendly sharing gentle humour to alleviate any stresses. They made sure myself and my partner were comfortable and well informed throughout. Post Op I was swiftly moved from recovery back to day surgery where the staff were also extremely kind and helpful. I remained for a short time, my take away medications were waiting for me prior to my arrival and I was escorted to the car when I felt ready. I received a call the following day to book my 2 week review of care which is where I currently am at on my recovery journey. I have received nothing but outstanding care. The processes and procedures in place work like a well oiled machine and I am extremely grateful to all staff I have encountered on my journey so far. Both my partner and I are NHS staff at a London trust and couldn’t be more impressed with the care received at both Stoke Mandeville and Wycombe hospitals. Thank you.

  2. Review titled I really appreciate what you did for me.

by JackReach - Posted on 22 November 2023

I recently had to use the emergency services and was taken to Stoke Mandeville. I was suffering from a shortness of breath and chest pain so felt compelled to call 999. The paramedics that attended to me were fantastic from the start to passing me into the care of A+E at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. The paramedics were so supportive whilst I was in some state of concern. They were thorough, calm and clearly listened to what I said and looking at the report on my own NHS app pretty much identified my problem. They were so kind and treated me brilliantly. They dropped me off at SM hospital and explained what would happen next. I'm not going to lie you if you want instant help/treatment but the reality is they are overrun. Wycombe and Amersham have closed so waiting on a bed in a corridor isn't what you want and I'm not the most patient patient! However I was then spoken to by the A+E doctor, Tabassum. He double checked my situation and explained what would happen next. It pretty much went along the lines of what he said (the only disruptions were caused by other patients not the staff) and all tests were completed. I was then taken to a department away from A+E where it's peaceful and the doctor comes to you - clinical decision unit? Tabassum confirmed I had a pulmonary embolism (PE) and was going to have to be transferred back to A+E for monitoring. To cut a long story short I stayed in overnight and was seen by various nurses and doctors I genuinely couldn't fault any of them. The following morning the specialist saw me and actually listened to me - I wanted to be discharged and saw no benefit in staying. She agreed and I had to have more tests before being discharged. I really have to say everyone from porters to nurses to doctors were superb. I'm sorry I cant remember all their names but thank you to you all. The system is overrun, this is not the staffs fault, we just have too many people needing care. If I'd been in another country I might not be here to write this feedback. I witnessed things that were caused by patients, not the NHS and it was disgraceful what they had to contend with. Thank you all Stoke Mandeville for taking care of me I really appreciate what you did for me.

  4. Review titled Poor care

When a young person is booked into A&E by the triage GP and told they may need emergency surgery. How is it ok for them to be left without pain relief in a waiting area that smells heavily of stale urine?? When asked if he can have pain relief , I was ignored. I know the NHS is stretched, but this is horrendous! I’ve been sat here now for over 4 hours and the toilets haven’t been cleaned once. This is disgusting. I have worked in another A&E and am appalled at the lack of care and compassion from the staff here.

  5. Review titled Excellent experience

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Zahra Fazel - Posted on 08 November 2023

Our little one needed emergency surgery and everyone from the ward clerk, ward staff, anaesthetists, theatre staff, porters and surgeons we met on our journey were fantastic. They were kind, accommodating and treated us with professionalism and respect. We were both very anxious parents who felt very much at ease and looked after. Our little one said she had a great day out despite being very frightened. She got to colour and enjoy the playroom, her little brother had a great time. The entire team of extraordinary people who were involved in her care were a true credit to your hospital and the NHS. Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts, you made a very difficult time in our lives very smooth and pleasant. God bless you all.

  6. Review titled The staff were all excellent

by Silver Ladies - Posted on 13 October 2023

I visited SM A&E recently. I arrived with my mother, who is in her 80s and had fallen quite badly. The staff were all excellent and we were really well looked after. I wanted to give a special mention to Barbara, the nurse in the main A&E department who gave us amazing care and made sure Mum was so well looked after. Thank you to you all for what you do.

  7. Review titled A missed appointment

    by Henryzx24 - Posted on 23 January 2024

I was given an appointment for a chest X-ray at Stoke Mandeville hospital after waiting over a month for any information about an appointment. When I got my revised appointment and time for Amersham hospital, I was away in the Lake District. On the email telling me of the changes of venue and date, there was a box asking me if I could attend but, because I was not in the area and was not prepared to leave the next day to return to Amersham hospital, wherever that is, I pressed the button saying I would not be able to attend. I am sorry for any inconvenience, but I did reply to your email.

  8. Review titled Awful Service

Rated 1 star out of 5

In my opinion, as a Consultant to the NHS for 30 years, the A&E department is the worst I have ever seen. Treatment of my daughter was a disgrace and she was left to sit in crowded A&E for over 10 hours with suspected meningitis (later confirmed) !

  9. Review titled The doctor I saw is an absolute star

    by hekatw77 - Posted on 23 October 2023

Was sent to A&E by my GP for ongoing chest pains. Was triaged fairly quickly and taken for an ECG. Taken to SDEC and had blood tests, then sat waiting for about 3 hours to then be informed their system had gone down. Had to go home, as I have 2 young kids so couldn't wait any longer. Never got to see a doctor, found most staff to be very dismissive. Got a call from a doctor when I was home saying my bloods were showing markers they wanted to investigate further. Went back the next day, was quick to have obs done and then waited a little over an hour for a Doctor. I have to say, the doctor is why I'm writing this. They were amazing. They listened to my concerns with empathy, they understood I'm a mum of 2 children below the age of 4, with a bad family history of cancer, and I was absolutely terrified. I also had to go alone as I was able to get cover for the kids but my partner wasn't able to get off work. I was quickly sent for a chest x-ray, when that came back clear they immediately covid tested me and took another set of bloods to rule out thyroid issues or blood clots. Waited for the results and the doctor was able to discharge me with antibiotics for chest and urine infections. I understand hospitals are understaffed, underfunded and lacking resources so wait times can be affected. What I can't understand is how 9/10 members of staff can be so lacking in compassion and understanding in a room full of poorly, scared people. The doctor I saw is an absolute star, and I think some of the more seasoned members of staff could learn a lot from their doctor's manner with their patients.

  10. Review titled A Magical Experience

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Honor Wojcik - Posted on 25 October 2023

I went into labour on Wednesday 11th October and had the most amazing experience, the midwives and all the staff treated me like I was the only girl in the world and I felt so special. They also made my partner and mum feel so included and special, it felt very personal. I felt safe and enjoyed the experience so much it brings tears of joy to my eyes. I gave birth to my beautiful 1st baby the following morning on the 12th and it truly was so magical. I had to return a few days later as my baby had jaundice but yet again the staff were amazing, they were quick to treat my daughter and we were really well looked after. It’s something I will never forget for all the right reasons. Thankyou to the amazing midwives and doctors.
