After receiving nasty deep scratches from a stranger’s Alsatian dog in the street I called 111. I had a quick and thorough response and was offered an appointment at the urgent care hub only 40 minutes later. I arrived early and was seen early by a Nurse who combined super-professionalism with a friendly, reassuring approach. I was 100% satisfied with my treatment which was quick but in no way hasty. I have to add that, like some other reviewers’ comments on the admin side, I was underwhelmed by the person on reception who instead of making proper eye contact and saying, “Just one moment, please”, ignored me till they were ready. It wasn’t long, but gave the wrong impression and risked undermining my approach to the clinical care.

After being kept waiting almost an hour late for my appointment, doctor barely acknowledged my existence. Not friendly or reassuring at all; in fact I found him to be rather rude, my appointment lasted just over 5mins, I had to ask him to explain my scan results; - I was extremely scared and anxious when I went in and left feeling pretty much the same; this doctor had no compassion for what I’m going through and made zero effort to put me at ease.

Day surgery at St Albans Hospital - Theatre/Surgery 1 The whole team were amazing. Doing the NHS proud as they covered and worked overtime due to the strikes the day before. Meant so much to me as I have needed this operation for so long and it kept being cancelled. Nurses were lovely and caring and the theatre team looked after me so well as I was very nervous as I was awake during my procedure. They were fab and made me feel so comfortable we even had a giggle. Thanks to all who helped ! Really meant a lot as it was clear I had totally underestimated the procedure I was having. You will be in good safe hands here.

Last week I attended orthopaedics for a full hip replacement and was very nervous. Totally unnecessary to feel like this, Doctors and staff were the very best. Procedure went well and I was discharged on the 3rd day. Very well done, I am so impressed with this amazing unit and would certainly recommend.

Wonderful staff, surgeon and best care I have ever experienced. Being 77yrs old I have had inpatient experience of a good number of hospitals over the years and this is the best by miles.10 out of 10 for care, kindness, respect, cleanliness and inpatient information.

I arrived this afternoon and found that only coins are accepted for parking payment. I don’t normally carry coins but think most patients have a credit or debit card. You ought to have at least one payment machine that accepts cards. Luckily I was able to change a note at the refreshment bar and get some coins.

In May 2022 I had my right knee replacement here, a very good experience which I reviewed at the time. Ten months later I am here for my left knee and if anything the experience is even better. I have less pain this time but have had to stay another two nights as wound not yet dry. But that is no hardship. All of the staff are knowledgeable, professional and kind. The food is excellent. There is a lovely calm, positive ambience around the ward. I may just be lucky as there were plenty of spare beds, I assume because they can't get the nursing staff. I know my operation was only possible because another surgeon had recently joined the team. He and the anaesthetists were just superb. I had such confidence in them and they made things easier with their sense of humour. The pre op, operation and post op care was first rate. The ward is clean and airey and the staff have great people skills, even with more difficult patients - not me of course! I know how lucky I am to live just a few miles from this excellent NHS resource. I think it is probably helped by not being too large a hospital. For instance not having an A and E here means that all surgery is planned. St Alban's hospital and it's orthopaedic department is, simply, excellent. Vive the NHS!!!
