    Picked up medications from usual chemists and then travelled away for Christmas. Discovered the chemist had only given us some of the medications, panic struck. This is Christmas Eve!! Phoned 111 and after a long wait time, got through to someone who contacted the QE who arranged for emergency medications and contacted an after hours chemist, sending through the prescription after checking they had stocks. All is now well and Thank You.

    I am so sad to say this but after visiting the A&E dept recently I am shocked and traumatised. After an 8 hour wait after having stroke like symtoms I came away more worried than when I went in. 4 hours for blood test results which still have not discussed the results with a doctor. Still dont know what is wrong with me! Came home went to bed not knowing if I was going to have a brain hemmorage. So after an 8 hour wait I still didnt get any answers to what was wrong with me. No privacy, nor respect or empathy for people. I had to look after an elderly patient who was left on her own in agony needing the toilet and dehydrated. Four times I asked could a nurse tend to her. Is it not the case that nursing staff and doctors are meant to do no harm? Honestly I am left traumatised amd it will take me a long time if at all I get over my ordeal. I have a disability and mental health issues and to be treated in this manner has shocked me to the core. How can they expect anyone to sit for 8 hours with no water? the water machine was empty, the floors were covered in blood and other matter people were coming in covered in blood and left sitting with blood going all over the floor. I could go on and on. I know the NHS is stretched and the staff work extremely hard but I am sorry the NHS a&E dept is not fit for purpose.

    My labour was not easy, but thanks to the excellent staff, everything went great. the midwives and the doctor were with me nearby and showed great care. Thank you for my baby and your excellent job.

    I attended A& E with chest pains & feeling very unwell. I was given a sheet of paper to fill in & left in the waiting room to wait for someone to call me. After a time of being in such pain that the other people waiting were concerned, I was eventually taken to see a nurse who done an ECG. She refused to give me the results of this ECG so I had no idea if anything was wrong and told me to wait for a doctor to tell me the results. I was worried sick as I had no idea if i was having a heart attack or a stroke but she had no concern for my pain or worry and simply told me to go back to the waiting room. I then asked for pain relief, and was told by another nurse that she would sort it, only 45 mins later she failed to reappear, so I , in agony went to go and find her. She was nowhere to be found & when I asked another nurse for pain relief and explained that I had been waiting some 4 hours by now, she replied with "what do you want me to do". It felt like she nor any other of the staff had any care for me as a patients or that I was in pain. It felt like I was bothering her. I then found a doctor in the nurses area who told me I would be waiting hours to be seen. At this point I had been there some 6 hours and had not seen a doctor or been given any pain relief. I know our NHS is struggling, but to be treated in such a manner that makes you feel like the nurses dont care about you, that you are taking up their time by asking questions and being dumped in the waiting room where there was no affordable food or drink for potentially 10 hours, and thats before you've seen the first doctor is shocking. I went home after 8 hours still having not seen a doctor because it was getting late and I had no way to get home once public transport stopped. I would now, If I had further chest pains, not bother attending A & E. The abuse and laziness of staff isnt worth it. In my view this A&E is now unfit for public use & puts lives at risk.

    On 25 Nov 2022 I had surgery for ovarian cancer at QE. The team of surgeons and anaesthetists were the most caring and empathetic people, and performed what I can only describe as a miracle on me. As soon as I had been told I had advanced cancer, I was also told it was inoperable. That was last January, then I went through chemo which reduced it a little so I was offered surgery for debulking at another hospital. However the anaesthetist said I was too high risk for it to go ahead. Hormone treatment followed which showed no success, then at the eleventh hour (my oncologist gave me a prognosis of Christmas 2022) I was told to expect an appointment with a surgeon at QE, Gateshead. This appointment filled me with hope, I was given empathy and positivity I was not expecting. There were two more appointments at QE for pre-op testing and to investigate a heart defect before being given the go ahead for surgery. I was admitted on 24 Nov and early the following morning all three surgeons came to see me to explain what would be happening and offer reassurance. I felt so calm and confident all thanks to them. I've had surgery three times before and was terrified each time. This experience was so different, I felt I was being treated as an individual rather than just another patient. The anaesthetists also were so kind to me and I went into surgery with confidence in the doctors and hope. I'm very squeamish and always look away when I have needles inserted into me and the thought I might need a stoma was my main concern. However, the wonderful surgeon, at our first meeting, had said this was a possibility but she considered it unlikely. I woke up so happy and feeling so much better that expected. Then to be told that all visible tumours had been removed was just so much more than I could have hoped for. The wonderful surgeon was right, no stoma! I had two large ovarian tumours, the omentum, lymph nodes, fallopian tubes and spleen removed. After a short stay in the High Dependency Unit, I was back on Ward 26. The nursing staff were all so lovely and friendly, I was able to shower myself right from the start (I had expected to be a lot more dependent) and was able to get out of bed right away and walk about without too much discomfort. The worst thing I had to deal with was vomiting! I am so very grateful and absolutely ecstatic to be alive thanks to the wonderful medics at QE.

    I was at childrens A&E on Sunday and despite it being busy & long wait the staff were fantastic and did everything to make my child (&me) feel at ease. Every member of staff from entering at the doorway to leaving 4 hours later were very supportive, reassuring and helpful. Such hardworking staff. So grateful.

    Had to attend a&e/urgent care for an injury and to say it was shocking is an understatement. As indicated by many others the 111 booking is a waste of time. I spent 5.5 hours past that. Before Your enter you go through security (that’s a world first for me in a hospital) and at 1230pm on a Tuesday the emergency room had no seating, 30 mins for obs check and then off to urgent care which was a boiling hot waiting room with again no chairs. A chaotic receptionist at the back of a room with a hole in the wall that you have to yell your personal details to. We saw this team member yell at patients, ask a patient “what do you want from me”, was clearly disorganised and lacked basic empathy. The doctor who saw me (2hours later) was inconvenienced by me. They didn’t check the area of complaint, was annoyed that I made reference to my notes and answered a phonecall during my check while saying “unfortunately yeah I am going to be working till 6pm” and then proceeded to ignore me so I had to ask her if we should go back to the waiting room. Urgent care have this bizarre process of sending people back to a&e for checks. So people go back and forth between the two. They do it in bulk with a number of patients going at once. Surely this creates more bottlenecks? Back to a&e for another 2 hours waiting for bloods and doctors in a room with blood spills over trolleys (how does that pass with the CQC checks?!) and then had to go into an unclean paediatric ward and cubicle that someone had just left to stand in the corner to get a shot (it was a serious suggestion that we go into a room with a patient in it and a stock cupboard - and I had to say no as I had to lift my top up to do this - I’m a woman). As I left I walked past a woman in the corridor having her blood taken and a vessel burst. She looked terrified. Along with a man who said he was 21 hours in and still waiting for pain relief. I fully appreciate the NHS teams are under huge pressure and having visited the next day the outpatient experience was amazing. The greeters are incredible and everyone was lovely outside of a&e but it’s clear none of this is the responsibility of the staff but those at the top. The trust need to do some serious work on processes, training and the experience as a whole because clearly based on my experience on a Tuesday afternoon and others I walked away feeling incredibly anxious and stressed about the experience, (so much blood and disregard for safety) and just felt as though I lost my dignity to get that last shot. This trust to be frank needs a complete overhaul. We shouldn’t have people like me in tears at the end of an experience like that and , Frankly I will never put anyone I love in this a&e process unless serious changes are made because if that was my experience with an injury I can only imagine how much worse it could have been.

  8. Review titled Hip replacement

    Had a hip replacement at the end of September at the QE hospital in Gateshead. The staff and surgical team were excellent. I was in for one day and all the staff were excellent. I am in my seventies and 100 percent better now thanks to all the staff.

    The individual staff I have dealt with are all fine and none of the issues I've experienced are their fault. But I communication and the waiting times in urgent care are appalling. I have been sent to the hospital urgent care by 111 and my GP several times now, having been told that I had an appointment and was expected. Every single time this seems to have been a complete myth and I end up waiting for hours past the time I was told to come in. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any alternative service for getting minor injuries seen to as the GP doesn't have the facilities to treat them, apparently. My injury will be healed by the time I get to see anyone!

    I arrived around 9:45 on the evening of Tuesday 25/10/22 with chest pains around heart area, gave all details to reception and told to take a seat. I was triaged and had blood pressure taken within 40 minutes ( good for kpi,s). I then had an ECG and bloods taken by 10:55 and told to wait to see a doctor. I then waited until 3:00am and when I asked at reception how long it would be I was told there were 9 others before me to see the doctor. The women behind me had been told one and a half hours earlier that there were 3 people ahead of her giving me an estimated wait of a further 4-5 hours. I said I couldn't wait any longer and needed to go home if I wasn't going to be seen and was told by the receptionist to have my doctor contact them to have the test results forwarded. After getting around 4 hours sleep and still having discomfort in my chest I had to drive to my doctor's surgery to ask them to request my test results they said they don't do that and I would need to contact a&e and have them send the results to my doctor. I then called a&e who said the test results would be sent over automatically but the doctor wouldn't receive them for 24 hours after being sent. I explained I still had chest issues and was told there was nothing they could do but if I would like to go back to a&e and wait to be seen again they would try and see me today. This is an absolute joke and could actually be dead now as I have been given no advice, seen a doctor or anything. Absolute disgrace.
