  1. Review titled Bad telephone/customer service manner

    by anit21 - Posted on 04 January 2024

I recently had a hospital appointment booked. I awoke with a cold and losing my voice so decided to call the hospital to enquire if it would be acceptable to attend the hospital. The response I got from a the member of staff I spoke to was - this is a hospital, it's full of sick people, so I don't see why not. I politely thanked them for their help and rang off. But I was furious! This member of staff made me feel stupid and their attitude was not acceptable. I feel they need some customer service training.

  2. Review titled Professional and efficient practice

Rated 5 stars out of 5

I attended Newton Abbot UTC on Wednesday morning 25 October 2023 with a suspected fracture of my arm and was most impressed with the reception and treatment given by the nurse practitioners on duty and their xray colleagues. It was professional, efficient and caring and I felt I was in very good hands. I would like to thank them very much for all they did.

  3. Review titled Excellent care late in the evening

Rated 5 stars out of 5

Having contacted 111 as tested positive for Covid and was having trouble breathing and classed as a vulnerable patient, they organised an appointment at 8.15pm at the UTC, Newton Abbot, where I was given a full and thorough assessment by a wonderful doctor. I had asked for antiviral medication to try to offset long covid as current condition is already difficult to cope with. Doctor advised he could not prescribe at Newton Abbot and was told to go to Torbay A & E. Arrived at Torbay to a packed waiting room. Was told I had to be assessed and triaged again, even though I had already undergone a full examination/triage at Newton Abbot. Was not happy that I was told to sit and wait in the waiting room due to being contagious (no one was wearing masks) so sat in the outer door area with the entrance door opening and closing every few minutes. I waited from 9.15pm on Tuesday to 4.45am on Wednesday the next day (7 hrs 45,mins) to be told I was not eligible for the antiviral medication, this question could have been put to a doctor on my arrival and settled almost immediately, the effects on my health were extreme as I already suffer with a long term chronic condition with fatigue being a major factor. Both my wife and I were exhausted by the end of this ordeal. Why must a patient be assessed/triaged twice, paperwork was handed over at our arrival, which if it had been looked at could have saved all those wasted hours and not in fact have caused me to become sicker than I already was. Disappointed in the whole process that needs to be looked into. UTC Newton Abbot should have been able to make a decision and/or prescribed the antiviral medication. With the increase in COVID cases now rising, implementation of masks should be reinstated.

  4. Review titled Wonderful service

Rated 5 stars out of 5

I asked for a hearing test from my GP last year and was told I could wait for ages or get referred to Specsavers who I chose. The test was absolutely hopeless as it was fine in a noisy environment and I was told I didn't need heating aids. I went back to my GP and asked for an appointment with the NHS and after a long wait got seen by great staff at newton abbot who tested my ears and fitted me with hearing aids. Very satisfied and won't bother with Specsavers any more! It is terrible that tax payers money is being wasted on private suppliers who cannot provide a decent service. Invest in our NHS!

  6. Review titled Excellent service

Having managed to impale myself on a poisonous thorn 1cm under my thumbnail nail bed I rang Kingsbridge MIU but was turned away as they ‘didn’t have an x ray unit on site’. I rang 111 who tried, unsuccessfully, to refer me again to the same Minor Injury Unit. The only solution was to refer me to Newton Abbot Urgent Car Centre, a 3 hour round trip. Luckily I had someone who could drive me. The care I received at Newton Abbot was exceptional. I was treated courteously and the issue was dealt with efficiently and professionally. No mention of an x ray, anaesthetic, a scalpel and forceps all that was required. Very strange to experience the best and the worst of the NHS on the same day!

  7. Review titled honesty and integrity

Rated 5 stars out of 5

somewhat belatedly I write to bring your attention to one of the Newton Abbot hospital employees. I visited on 3 August at 0900 hrs. In moving from reception to the X-ray waiting area I unwittingly dropped my wallet. A female cleaning operative picked up the wallet and followed me into the waiting room to re-unite me with my property. The loss of the wallet would have presented me, not only with the loss of the money, but also with much effort in cancelling my credit and debit cards but also the waiting time for new replacements. I would therefore like to bring your attention to the very helpful and very honest lady who found and returned to me the entire contents of my wallet and who I believe should be much congratulated on her integrity. Regretfully, and much to my shame, I did not find out her name but if contactable I would like to offer her a token of my gratitude

  8. Review titled Great Staff Great Service

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Paul Willing - Posted on 30 April 2023

Today attended minor injuries and received great treatment from everyone. From reception who were professional and top notch to the minor injuries nurse that was very professional and did a great job. In between the Radioligist provided more great service. Very caring professional and ensured the product delivered was correct for the diagnosis to be undertaken. Every member of the team that dealt with me were truly exceptional and should be congratulated Thanks Newton Abbot, hopefully I won’t need you again but would be 200% confident to return. Thanks

  9. Review titled Audiology

Rated 3 stars out of 5

My Doctor referred me to Audiology and I turned up for my appointment at Newton Abbot Hospital only to be told my appointment had been cancelled! Apparently the cancellation was a mistake. Nobody knows why it happened? I was given another appointment and finally saw the Audiologist on 6th April. She wrote to my GP saying she would refer me to Ear, Nose and Throat. On 8th June (two months later!) Ear, Nose and Throat say they haven't received a referral from Audiology! It beggars belief. Luckily Ear, Nose and Throat have kindly agreed to backdate a referral request as if they received it in April as I already waited two months being told the appointment was being processed!

  10. Review titled Awful Experience

Rated 2 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 21 February 2023

Total humiliation for my 86 year old husband from a nurse on UTC. Was told he should not be there and was kept waiting 4 hours to have a skin graft redressed. Previous week I had phoned the hospital and explained what was needed, was told by the receptionist, yes come in any time and a nurse will be available to redress the area. It was extremely busy and we understand the pressure these nurses are under but there is no excuse for total nastiness.
