  1. Review titled I felt cared for

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Roger Pearce - Posted on 25 February 2024

I spent 6 days as a (Urology) patient on Ward 7B(North) in February 2024 following an urgent operation. Without exception every nursing staff member whom I came into contact with on the ward was professional and caring. There were those who went above and beyond this of course, but I am not allowed to name them here; they know who they are. Aside from the medical and personal care, I wish to state that hospital food is often much maligned but in my case, I report that I found it to be a revelation. Quality, healthy, varied patient food which arrived at my bedside hot (where applicable) and well presented by attentive staff. All this produced for a pittance per patient, per day - some sort of modern day miracle! Well done the catering staff on all counts. Finally, a mention for those who often go unmentioned; the cleaning staff on the ward. They are happy, courteous and efficient. One often hears others bemoaning hospital experiences, but my short stay gives the lie to this, certainly regarding the Urology team and Ward 7B(North) staff. Well done and my warm thanks to all concerned in my case.

  2. Review titled Dire, Dirty, Degrading & Uncaring

Rated 1 star out of 5

Too much to tell. Bring back the domineering matron! It needs a complete cultural change so staff know who has checked in at the relevant reception but not yet been seen: check-in should be carried out before the patient is told to wait in a particular area. All areas need to be properly cleaned and disinfected on a daily basis: nasty germs are rife - it's no wonder I picked up a UTI whilst waiting to be seen. Condescending questions like "do you known what a rupture is?" implying one's knowledge of the English language is limited should be avoided and rephrased to explain the point being made. Staff gathering around a reception desk and clearly having a long social conversation (and being joined by a doctor!) implies they have no work to do.

Having had yet another appointment cancelled on the day, the staff member showed no empathy when phoning me, i expressed my frustration as this has happened several times with this speciality, to be told i'm not giving you another appointment and putting the phone down,

  4. Review titled Confusing & Frustrating Appointment Process

Rated 3 stars out of 5

by Peter Garratt - Posted on 21 March 2024

After being referred to a haematologist in Oct. 23, I was given an appointment in Feb. 2024. This was cancelled due - I believe to staff holidays. Subsequently, a further appointment was made for mid March and cancelled with no explanation. A further appointment in late March was also made and cancelled with no explanation. During this period, information available via the NHS app, text message and letter overlapped and conflicting, causing confusion and concern. It would be an improvement if such confusion could be avoided and information sources more coherent. I now have an appointment scheduled for late April and it remains to be seen whether this actually takes place.

  5. Review titled Poor service

Rated 1 star out of 5

Arrived to A&E at 11.45pm on 31/12/2023 with suspected brain bleeding. Have not been seen or treated at all -been triaged and bloods taken within first 3 hours. Then nothing has happened until 5.45am when ct scan was ordered. Asked nurse for painkillers, did not get any. Has seen the medical team but no decision was made. Have spent more than 12 hours in waiting room with no food or medication, I had to discharged myself. This is ridiculous! Saw lots of staff frankly walking aimlessly and not foing any work or delivering the service. Very poor provision given the seriousness of symptoms.

I attended for diabetic eye screening. I was seen on time by a delightful person who made the experience pleasant. Her whole approach was commendable

my operation went well the surgeon who carried it out visited me either later that day or the next day was feeling a bit hazy so not sure the nurses visited regularly taking blood pressure etc. the ward was clean I was offered change of sheets & a shower if I wanted so I was happy with the service I felt although it’s a busy place all staff try their best & are polite even when a patient who may not be happy is kicking off a bit

  9. Review titled Rude Orthopedics Outpatients experience

Rated 2 stars out of 5

To try to avoid the wait of being number 30 in the queue and at the suggestion of the recorded message I tried to change an orthopedics appointment online to bring it forward at the request of my physiotherapist. I didn't know I couldn't bring an appointment forward at this stage and this wasn't clear on the website. I ended up cancelling the appointment in error. I contacted the appointments line and waited 1 hour 15 minutes to speak to someone. The person I spoke to seemed more interested in chatting to the person next to her and was finding something extremely funny. I understand why she couldn't help me bring an appointment forward, however, when I commented I had waited an hour and a quarter to get nowhere, their response was "well you were the one that cancelled the appointment". I did so in error and to try to avoid the long wait to get through to an operator which I had explained. Some understanding in the position I was in especially knowing the queue I had been in to speak to someone would not have gone amiss! I usually find all the operators more than understanding and helpful in their responses so was disappointed in the service I received on this occasion.

  10. Review titled Awful experience

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 31 January 2024

My mum had broken her foot in 2 places and we got sent to Lister from QE2. When we got to Lister we were walking around for two hours and being told to go to one department and then being told to go to another with no help on where to go. No one knew or helped us where to go when staff saw I was carrying my mum and couldn’t find a wheel chair. This hospital needs some serious improvement on their communication skills. No one was helpful or kind when I was clearly carrying my mum who was in a lot of pain.
