  1. Review titled I wish designers would try it out in a wheelchair themselves

    by Wheels58 - Posted on 29 September 2023

I am a wheelchair user and needed to go to A&E last week. I attended with my husband. We got in the reception and found the reception desk far too high for anyone in a wheelchair. No one could see me nor me them. I'm hard of hearing too and when my husband told them I was there they continued to sit and made no attempt to stand or engage with me. There was a lower desk area to the side but no one was there and it was partially blocked by computer screens which defeated the purpose of it being there. I went to it and tried to get someone's attention, eventually someone came and took some details but then she told me to then go to her colleague who was sat behind the higher bit of the desk who I couldn't see or hear. I ended up myself going to the end where the opening was for staff to get in to the reception area and trying to get her attention. The whole design in that area is not ideal for wheelchair users, the seating area too wasn't thought out properly either which was very narrow. This is such a shame as it is a new build. I wish designers would actually try it out in a wheelchair themselves and see how it works out.

  2. Review titled They don't prioritise patients in accordance to injuries

    by firexn75 - Posted on 04 October 2023

Checked in to A&E department around 9pm. Wasn’t busy and people were seen quickly. But my son with additional needs was left waiting for 5 hrs to be seen. Others had come in and been seen and left before he was seen. The pain so severe that he was sick, no pain relief given until asked and asked for. Cold drinks ran out of vending machine, no cups to get water for my son. After waiting 5 hrs was seen by doctor, doctor rude and didn’t understand my son and neither took notice of his additional needs meaning he couldn’t explain himself properly. Sent to X-ray and didn’t know where it was, poor directions given to get there. Once had X-ray waited a further 3 hrs to be seen again. Don’t feel they prioritise patients in accordance to the severity of their injuries - upon speaking to another patient, they had small mark to hand, and were seen within 20 minutes for X-ray and done. A&E department needs to book their ideas up. Staff seemed to be having loads of brakes. Patients under the influence of drugs or alcohol walking around and harassing other patients without staff intervention. Never in all the time I have visited A&E have I had to wait so long and this was also busy times. 4-5 hours tops. Since new build, waiting times are ridiculous and badly run.

  4. Review titled Poor service

    by Disgusted2023 - Posted on 15 August 2023

I am absolutely disgusted with the charade you call the A+E department. Under staffed, no doctors and 7 hrs wait for just blood results. In my view your department is pathetic and a joke

  5. Review titled Short visit to ED

    by Sandy500 - Posted on 31 August 2023

Had a fall while out walking and injured both feet. My daughter drove me to ED where I was checked in, had x rays and out within 2 hours. I was given a pair of crutches but no foot supports or dressing for my badly grazed knee. I felt the service was good as I was prepared for a long wait. However, maybe the cut backs don't allow for dressing etc. So we bought some on the way home.

  6. Review titled Kind and reassuring

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 16 August 2023

I attended A and E on the advice of a clinician, after calling the 111 service. I was seen quickly, and was examined with skill and kindness. I left the department completely reassured that I need have no further worries. The NHS at its very best. Thank you.

  8. Review titled A friendly, efficient experience

    by Phil-Tig - Posted on 14 July 2023

Appointment made for 8.00 AM - friendly & efficient welcome. Staff superb in patient care & assistance. The operating room staff were reassuring and very efficient. The consultant surgeon introduced himself and explained the procedure and why it had been requested. The consultant performed the procedure expertly and with minimum discomfort and was able to reassure regarding his findings. A consultant surgeon and a friendly gentleman. The recovery room staff were once again first class. All-in-all a friendly, efficient experience.

  9. Review titled Excellent care let down by it's systems

Rated 2 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 01 August 2023

I was taken by ambulance to A&E with breathing problems and a nasty cough. I cannot speak highly enough about the care, efficiency and professionalism of the staff. I was x-rayed, fitted with a cannula, had bloods taken and delivered safely to EMU in just under 4 hours all with a smile, excellent. I spent a night and day on the equally well run EMU and cannot speak highly enough of their care, especially how they seem to group patients with similar problems together. My room mates and I coughed wheezed and spent 2 sleepless nights together in tolerance and harmony. My shock therefore when i was moved to the so called respiratory ward Pearson was immense. The first bay contained exhausted looking patients forced to spend the entirety of their stay with a person who was shrieking the same name over and over at full volume and had been doing so for a week i was told. The noise was intolerable and loud noises being one of my triggers, I confess to a meltdown and insisted i was going home. The staff of this ward were amazing, and somehow managed to find me a bed in a quieter bay. Their care for this anxiety panic attack sufferer was exemplary. My respect for them grew as I watched them deal all night with the geriatric patient in my bay who's respiratory system seemed in fine order judging by the noise and abuse they inflicted on those caring for them. I was told the geriatic wards were full and the patient was such a problem they'd been with them for several weeks. During the rest of the night as I was cursed and insulted by other people in my bay every time i coughed or wheezed it became apparent that Pearson ward seems to be used as a dumping ground for patients not wanted by social services and other wards. I was the only person coughing and wheezing in my bay and was shouted at and accused of having a nasty disease. Seemed odd behaviour for supposed fellow respiratory patients. The member of staff posted on a chair in the doorway to keep guard was another clue! The staff and patients of this ward deserve better. They couldn't even find a nebuliser machine for me...in a respiratory ward..really? The computer system was refusing to accept the passwords allocated to agency staff, making them toothless and unable to log in. My eternal thanks to the staff member who supplied me with earplugs and mask so I could ignore the hurtful comments and all the staff who did their utmost to comfort me in the worst night I have ever had in hospital. I hope your employers treat you better in the future. Calow, Pearson ward is a disgrace, your staff and patients deserve better.

  10. Review titled Thank you so much!

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Jade Mercer - Posted on 08 July 2023

I attended A&E as I was extremely unwell with suspected Sepsis, I have never felt so ill and was beside myself in pain. Within 10 minutes of checking into the A&E department my obs were taking & a canular was fitted. Within 20 minutes I was given oramorph, had a fluid & antibiotic line fitted and then taken straight to a 'Major' bay around the corner. The Doctor and nurses were all lovely, reassuring and calm... I was quite scared and had a high temperature meaning I was shaking excessively and they quickly helped deal with my pain. In the 'Major' bay I was wheeled to a recliner chair and given a blanket and slept whilst My fluid line etc finished. A nurse came to check me a few times and rake my obs and then the initial doctor came and discharged me with Antibiotics & Diflam Spray and diagnosed with Septic Tonsillitis. I genuinely cannot believe how quick the team made me feel better compared to the amount of pain/how ill I felt approximately 2 hours before leaving. I was in and out of A&E within 3 hours. The new A&E department was extremely clean and well organised too meaning I was first taken into a side room for my canular fitted then taken through a back door to the doctors room then taken round to the bay not having to go back into the waiting room.
