  1. Review titled Staff dedication

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Lorraine Turner - Posted on 08 November 2023

I visited the royal hospital yesterday to visit my sister on the emergency management unit. I was amazed by the numerous staffs that approached us to ask totally unprompted if they could assist us in locating where we needed to go. I am a retired health professional therefore have experience of numerous hospitals. The majority of the staff were in dark green (domestic staffs but also porters). I have never witnessed the like before where staff are so so supportive to visitors. Their managers should be so proud and ensure they are properly commended. They are after all the front line of your service. Truly amazing. Nursing staffs on the emergency management unit were also very welcoming when we visited.

  2. Review titled Frustration of after care

by Dazowls - Posted on 17 November 2023

I was originally booked in for my operation for rezum treatment, unfortunately the evening before I was informed it was cancelled, which obviously I found frustrating I then get informed week after it’s booked for the the following week which was a relief as I wanted it done ASAP. After the operation I was told I would have catheter fit and I would have it for a week. The week before my operation I had purchased away tickets to watch the football there and I was assuming I would be having my catheter removed on that week, so I had already had to miss a game due to my operation being rearranged. I’m a season ticket holder I might add, we won but my dad became unwell with an illness at the game and I wasn’t with him, due to having to cancel going. I was advised by the staff on Hollywell ward that if I hadn’t heard from the hospital three days prior to the scheduled surgery about my aftercare and removal of my catheter, that I was to phone that day - which I did do so and was told on the phone a nurse would get back to me. I appreciate they are busy but they never got back until the early hours of the next morning. I had my registration plates stolen from my car, so was busy all day attempting to get hold of replacements and reporting to the police and still never had a call back. I then phoned up the following morning and was informed I wasn’t having my catheter removed until a later date, meaning I have had to cancel my trip to the football for both me and my nephew as I don’t fancy travelling and driving for over 3 hours with a catheter bag on due to-it overfilling and spilling in my vehicle or not being able to get to a toilet and empty it at the game, meaning I’m well out of pocket again from the purchase of tickets. I was told I could try and get a district nurse to remove the catheter but my doctors at my surgery say they would need a referral from the hospital to do so, hence my frustration and upset from non removal.

  3. Review titled Devonshire Ward excellent

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Marie Schofield - Posted on 22 November 2023

I was taken via ambulance to the A&E dept in the early hours of the 13/11. Ambulance crew were amazing. I did feel that the wait to see a doctor in A&E was far too long and without any pain relief (in extreme pain). I was eventually taken to SAU where the nurses/HCAs were great. I eventually transferred to Devonshire ward where i remained for 9 days. The entire time i was there the staff on that ward were amazing. I cannot praise the ward staff enough for the kindness, help, care and concern. Despite being constantly busy and non stop in their job roles nothing was too much trouble for them and they always made time to talk/listen and support me when i needed them.

  4. Review titled Thank you a million times over

    by irregularitygy47 - Posted on 08 December 2023

I’ve had joint problems my entire life due to a disability. Since I was a teenager I’ve tried to get help for the chronic pain associated with my condition - I’ve seen GPs who googled my condition in front of me and said I just wanted more medication and physios who said there was nothing wrong and that I needed to stop being dramatic. After my pain got drastically worse, I visited the fracture clinic at CRH. Considering my past medical experiences, I wasn’t expecting much, but I wish I’d have visited CRH all those years ago. Everything I said was not only listened to but understood, all tests were done within an hour (no “come back for an X-Ray”) and we got to the bottom of everything in that one appointment. Even the reception staff were wonderful - having informed them that my allocated appointment was too far in advance and that I couldn’t cope, they called me as soon as there was an earlier cancellation, which luckily for me was an appointment in half an hour’s time! I had a really wonderful experience at CRH and I hope that all staff get the recognition they deserve. It honestly felt in the same ballpark of private hospital appointments I’ve had, which says a hell of a lot about the standard CRH set for their care - thank you a million times over.

  5. Review titled Shocking

Rated 2 stars out of 5

by Nichola Spurr - Posted on 07 November 2023

Was sat with a family member in A&E for 10 hours before being seen by the doctors, wasn't offered any pain relief until he had been there 5 hours. Receptionist was so rude and disrespectful when asked how long it would be until we was seen.

  6. Review titled Amazing

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 28 November 2023

After turning 50 this year, I was invited to my first routine mammogram on 31st October. Got a letter a week later asking me to go for more tests. Further mammogram and ultrasound on 15th November revealed a breast lump. They did a biopsy there and then and I was immediately told that they suspected it was cancer. Biopsy results on 28th November revealed a small tumour and I'm booked in for surgery on 29th December. I'm amazed at how quickly I've been diagnosed and treated. The staff in the breast clinic were lovely and supportive, as were the medics in the breast surgery clinic today. I'm already being treated for a blood cancer and I was reassured that the breast surgery team had liaised with the haematology team prior to my appointment today to discuss options. I will be forever grateful for the routine screening and the rapid follow ups. Thank you.

  7. Review titled Excellent treatment and care

Rated 5 stars out of 5

I would like to thank all of the staff involved in my care/ treatment over the last 24 hours. I presented in AE yesterday evening with an infected abcess to my back and have had an incision and drain this afternoon. My whole experience from AE to SAU theatre and postop care was excellent. Every member of staff I came across was compassionate and empathic in a friendly reassuring way. Thank you again

  8. Review titled Shocked by the attitude

by Anonymous - Posted on 26 May 2024

My partner entered ED on the verge of fainting from excruciating pain, I asked a nurse assigned to him to practioner to 'please help him', just those three words, no more. I would have hoped my request was understood for what is was, advocating on behalf of someone shaking from head to foot with pain, instead I was told 'you're not helping me !' The nurse practitioner proceeded to try a procedure that my partner had explained was unsuccessfully attempted by a consultant the day before. Unfortunately , that did not deter the practitioner and it proved extremely painful without the gas and air my partner had earlier been told ( by a different nurse) that he could use. Unsurprisingly, the agonising procedure failed. The attitude, absence of compassion, and absence of any willingness to listen that we experienced was shocking and sadly memorable for that reason. The person seemed proud of their technical ability, which in other circumstances may be impressive, but it is equally important to quickly recognise when more expertise is needed to care with compassion. ED was not overwhelmed at the time, people were being seen quickly. Maybe the practitioner had other stressors in their life though the impression left was more of an arrogant faith in . Thankfully, on transfer to another department a consultant quickly reduced my partner's pain to manageable.

  9. Review titled Friendly, cheerful, caring and efficient people

    by likeableyk76 - Posted on 20 October 2023

From the moment I went into the Endoscopy reception area I was helped to relax by the friendly response that I received. Overall, I must have spoken to 7 or 8 people and every one of them was cheerful and reassuring. It felt as if I had gone to a family gathering. It was a very positive experience.

  10. Review titled Long wait no pain relief

    by Katherine23 - Posted on 08 November 2023

I took a letter to a&e my doctor wanted me to get checked over irregular heart beat and severe abdominal pain I waited over 2 hours to be asessed when I was assessed I repeated I was in sever pain I was told they would put a canula in and I would get some pain relief I was also put on heart monitor has I had a funny chest pain I used my spray my stats had dropped so I was transferred to majors in a chair room again I asked for pain relief I was put on monitors I was in alot of pain I pressed my buzzer so that I could go to toilet and become more comfortable When I returned I told the HCA I was back I thought I would be put back on monitors after 20 I was not put back on monitors the Dr had told me they wanted another edge doing no one came so pressed my buzzer after 15+ minutes I asked another HCA who just put plug in but didn't set it up again so screen was blank I asked another HCA if I could go home, I was pain, I had had enough and I had pain killers at home they said they would ask but never came back . Another came to take me to SAU for assessment I asked about pain relief they said they would check but came back and apologies but none had been ordered so I needed to asked when I went up for assessment now I was confused has I was taken to Murphy ward. I quired this has it was not sau I had also asked for my canula to be taken out twice has it had blown and my hand had swollen which caused me even more pain. I asked why I was in Murphy not sau i was shown to a room I was waiting for Dr. In the end the pain was too much so I went to see nurse and signed myself out. I had just got home when my husband said A&E have been looking for me, even though they had sent me to Murphy ward I have since found out this was mistake. I should have been taken to SAU who were also looking for me I phoned SAU and explained what had happened they said they were glad I was safe and asked if I would like to go back next day which I declined In summary I was left without pain relief for 7 hours plus after asking at least 4 times I was supposed to be monitored which I wasn't the care I feel was very lacking and mistakes were made has to were I was supposed to be and where I was taken no an experience I want to repeat I was there nearly 8 hours
