Review titled Staff are outstanding
Rated 4 stars out of 5
by Jackie leighton - Posted on 10 May 2023
Under the pressure that the staff are under they continue to show kindness to all the patience I witnessed. They are constantly receiving abuse from members of the public and dealing with extremely difficult cases. With the resources they have they do a great job.

Review titled Impossible to Communicate effectively
Rated 3 stars out of 5
by Clare - Posted on 07 June 2023
I was referred to Gynaecology by my GP in April 2023. She referred me as an 'urgent' case. I received an appt reasonably quickly (in May) but was suprised to read that is was for August, which worried me as the referral was 'urgent'. To date I have left 6 messages for someone to get in touch. All they have is an answer machine. What's the point of leaving a message if nobody gets back to you. Additionally the appointment date falls when I am out of the country. I've tried to tell them but I don't know if they have heard that or not, as they haven't sent out another appointment. My GP has been so understanding, excellent really. Sadly I can't say the same for the Gynaecology department at the moment. No wonder they have such a waiting list if appointments are being made without following up with patients who can't attend. I look forward to some response having left this review, but again sadly I have little confidence that there will be one...

Review titled Excellent care from doctors, nurses and technicians
Rated 4 stars out of 5
by John S - Posted on 27 April 2023
The staff are very friendly and helpful. They provided a great level of care and support. The team in A&E especially, tried their very best to make myself and other patients comfortable. The only issue was the terrible waiting times. I waited 5h to be seen by a doctor and then another 2h to wait for results of blood tests. Completely understand they’re rushed off their feet and that they’re all doing their utmost to care for everyone. It just shows your that they’re not paid enough for what they do and the lack of staff in an A&E department is just crazy. Thank you to the staff that were on the shift between 6pm and 2am.

Review titled Terrible time wasting
Rated 1 star out of 5

A&E service is completely disorganised. My 85yr old father was brought in by ambulance with a worrying ECG. It took 4 hours before blood tests were taken and then another 2 to get the results. At this point the Doctor said there was nothing obvious and after discussion discharged him. Why don’t they take bloods on admission???? Avoid the 4 hour wait and get people through the system quicker

Review titled Really good service
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Mr David A Jenkins - Posted on 08 April 2023
Just before Christmas I was diagnosed as having a Basal Cell Carcinoma on my forehead. I was put on a waiting list for plastic surgery. I was surprised that the waiting time was quite long but then I told the hospital that, as I was retired, I could be with them within two hours of being contacted. Two days later a very nice doctor and nurse team removed the BCC. There were no problems at all with infection or bleeding and 6 weeks later I was told that the problem was completely resolved by a plastic surgery registrar and the scar is now almost invisible. The registrar also was able to confirm that there were no other BCCs on me body and has arranged for one other mark to be removed at some point in the future. It's fair to say that I have been impressed.

Review titled Attended A&E after being triaged by 111
Rated 2 stars out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 26 April 2023
I was told to attend by 2045 to A&E after being triaged by 111. Triage was very quick. Soon after was told to sit and wait for bloods and ECG then this would be reviewed by a Doctor. This was around 2100hrs. No one spoke to me or any of the people waiting for help. I had to ask someone at 2345hrs and was told they could not tell me the time as they were prioritising cases as they come. I then asked if I could self discharge against medical advice as I was not a priority. They then looked for my paperwork and did my ECG for 2 Mins and was asked to wait and there was not time frame. I then asked to self discharge! My question to A&E is , if one's presentation is not a priority why not tell them at least a time frame. If you cannot then tell them to go home and maybe phone GP the next day. Sitting arrangements are chaotic, Drs and nurses go to 3 different places looking for patients waiting to be seen. I think A&E Bedford can do better in your triage system. I would never let any patient of mine sitting for 3 hrs without telling them anything. On A positive Note - I was so happy to see at least more than 8 doctors and a number of nurses walking up and down. This was a reassuring sign that you value patient's care.

Review titled Disappointing leadership/ management
Rated 1 star out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 19 March 2023
Presented to Bedford A&E following poor care from another hospital. I was booked in and was seen by a triage nurse and I explained what had happened to me at another hospital. He immediately called the doctor for review and put in cannula and was given strong pain relief medication which took instant effect. I was placed back in the waiting room and a couple of hours went past and I asked for more pain relief every 30 minutes, but wasn’t followed up till I was called by a doctor 4 hours later. It was reviewed and surgeons called and went for a CT scan. I was then left in a corridor for another 2 hours till found by a consultant who came on for day shift and saw me pass out. She immediately put on IV fluids because of how dehydrated I was. I was then forgot about for another 4 hours just sitting in bed and when I asked they said the surgeon had forgotten about me in the department and at this point the intense pain started to return, so, out of frustration, I tried to find SAU but got lost and fell asleep in hospital reception and went to a different hospital after an hour. I was in the department for 11 hours without being treated or admitted despite the department not being busy. Presented to another hospital, I had diagnostic tests that morning and an operation immediately after and I am now recovering on HDU.

Very grateful for the treatment received by all of the staff, very caring and helpful could not have received a better level of service. Please pass our thanks for the kindness and consideration to all of staff involved. In these difficult times it is easy to be critical but the treatment my wife received was first class.

Review titled No contact

dad was taken to A and E by ambulance early hours of this morning, it is now 17:16 and I do not know what ward he is in, what's wrong with him or anything. I have called A&E but there is no reply, the operator could not tell me anything about him either. This is not good enough.
