Review titled Well organised
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Janice Hoare - Posted on 07 October 2023
I went for a flu jab this morning and everything was extremely well organised with people directed where to go and what to do, with all staff being friendly and helpful. I didn't have long to wait and the nurse giving the injection was friendly and efficient, and gave a pain free jab.

they tell me to put cream on my hands every time I come in, I've had the problem many times where the skin on my hands breaks out until they bleed, the creams I buy myself work better than those prescribed by Maybush. treatment at my own expense because maybush cannot treat any of the problems I come with.

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us regarding the prescribing of hand cream. The NHS spends hundreds of millions of pounds each year on prescriptions for medicines that can be bought from a pharmacy or supermarket. By reducing the amount the NHS spends on over the counter medicines, we can give priority to treatments for people with more serious conditions, such as cancer, diabetes and mental health problems. Therefore, patients are only entitled to products that the Prescriber believes are clinically necessary, and which are in line with the list of drugs that the NHS is prepared to pay. For example, gluten free foods, sun block, vitamins and minerals, bath preparations, hand creams and cough syrups are not offered on the NHS unless the patient is suffering with certain specified medical conditions. We are sorry that this mean you need to pay for your own treatment. More information about this can be found at: https://www.nhs.uk/common-health-questions/medicines/why-cant-i-get-prescription-over-counter-medicine/

Review titled Lack of compassion
Rated 3 stars out of 5
by Alexandra Beane - Posted on 07 October 2023
I was contacted about my initial appointment at the surgery for my flu vaccination when I was pregnant in September 2023. I booked the appointment but did let the member of staff know that my baby was due 13th September and consequently I might have to cancel and rearrange. I was overdue by 8 days and accidentally missed my appointment on 23rd September (having given birth on 21st September) and received a phone call from the surgery to rearrange and inform me that I had missed the appointment. The member of staff I spoke to was offhand and rude and when I explained that I had only given birth 2 days ago, she disregarded this and was silent at the other end of the phone. I was clearly feeling very vulnerable having just given birth and felt this wasn’t taken into consideration at all. Especially when considering how emotionally fragile and hormonal new mothers are, I felt this showed a real lack of passion. Furthermore, my abrupt phone call was followed up by a text message that said I ‘must’ (in capital letters) let the surgery know if I could not attend appointments and that ‘repeated DNAs may result in removal’ from the GP’s list. I then further received a text message on Monday 2nd October which read in capital letters (again) ‘Please remember to cancel your appointment via the reminder link so that this can be given to someone else. That someone else may be you in the future. Please help us to help you and others.’ when a genuine mistake had been made. I felt that after the reception I received from the member of staff at the surgery, a further two text messages were unnecessary and abrupt. The irony is not lost on me that this review would not allow me to include words that were all in capital letters when this was how I received the messages from the practice. When I eventually attended the flu vaccination appointment on Saturday 7th October, the members of staff administering the vaccinations informed me that I was not eligible for the vaccination as I had already delivered. Luckily, a member of staff made the decision to administer the vaccination and make an exception for me. This was very frustrating when I had been made to feel guilty for missing my appointment.

Thank you Alexandra for sharing your feedback with us. Firstly congratulation on the birth of your new born. We appreciate that sometimes people miss their appointments for reasons outside of their control... however sadly we have many patients who repeatedly waste NHS appointments and 'do not attend' multiple times a month, sometimes each week. We need to take a stern approach to this but you personally have not been targeted, these messages are auto generated by the system so they are sent to all without exception. The capital letters are not meant to come across as abrupt but more to emphasise our expectations. The further two messages you mentioned are considered necessary as this gives patients the opportunity to cancel unwanted appointments. Sending these warning messages does not mean that you will be struck off the list for a first offence, but it is important that we have a record of this so that our repeat offenders are addressed. 156 patients 'did not attend' their appointment in September; that's 26 1/2 hours of appointments that we could have offered to others. We all know how difficult it can sometimes be to get an appointment and this is some of the reason why. We can see your frustration but hope you now understand this a little better and appreciate the difficulty we face with balancing the capacity with demand. Strictly speaking once the baby is delivered, we are not commissioned to provide a flu vaccine, however I'm pleased to see that the nursing team took a pragmatic view on this and still gave you the vaccination.

Contact is very infuriating! Trying to get past the initial answer of the call, yet I am told initially I could be struck off if impolite!

Sadly we have a minority of patients who think its acceptable to shout and swear at staff whilst only doing their job; some have even threatened us with violence. We really are very sorry that you find this frustrating but we feel it absolutely necessary to advise patients that this behaviour will not be tolerated. We hope you understand that and agree that staff should be treated with respect in exactly the same way that we treat patients :-(

They are trying hard to improve services and are using electronic resources to assist with this. They have recruited new staff but they are still unknown, it does sometimes concern me that I don't get the same doctor and have to repeat my history.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. Yes we do have lots of new starters in post, so we ask that patients bear with us whilst they undergo their training. Our GPs are part time so its not always possible to always see the GP. Although providing a short history is helpful, please rest assured that all GPs have access to your medical history. We are however, working on providing more pre-bookable appointments for continuity of care.
