Following an insect bite 2 days earlier, by Friday afternoon my forearm was swollen, red and painful and NHS 111 told me I needed to see someone that day. I knew I would not be able to see anyone at my GP practice that day, or possibly even the following week as there are no appointments (although my need was more urgent than next week anyway), and sought help and advice at the Witham Pharmacy where the manager carried out a consultation and offered to prescribe a short course antibiotics if I wanted them. Bearing in mind the information on the NHS site about the risk of cellulitis and sepsis, the advice from NHS 111 and the way the inflammation had spread I said yes please, and following further checks and advice he issued and made up a prescription within 10-15 minutes. I would have confidence in using the pharmacy first service there again if I needed to, and very much appreciate it as I know I would not have been able to get help from my GP surgery. Very professional and careful service.
