  1. Review titled Alcohol Control

    by Cath22 - Posted on 20 September 2022

As I got older, I realised I was gradually drinking more. I realised it was starting to have an effect on me and I didn't want to lose control. I attended CGL Wisbech and found a connection with people in the groups. No-one was ashamed and no-one was made to feel shame. I admired people who came in and shared their stories openly. I have been introduced to the Recovery Service café and enjoy spending time with people who understand me and I admire the people there.

Hi Cath22 I am so please you have connected with others through CGL. Recovery is so much harder on your own, some would say impossible. The groups we deliver are part of your journey. Making connections with others. Recovery continues outside of these sessions in your community all of the time. Keep connecting and engaging with others. Well done and keep going!! 2. Review titled Very “one size fits all”

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 11 October 2022

Would like to echo a previous review I just read about this service not being suitable for anyone who is on the autistic spectrum or neurodivergent. I’m sure they help lots of people but I encountered a very one size fits all approach that I found very frustrating and completely unsuitable for my own needs. I of course can’t speak for others and it is genuinely warming to see so many positive reviews here but if you have complex mental health needs, I would advise you to proceed with extreme caution at cgl Manchester. There used to be a thing here called the dual diagnosis service for such complex cases and sadly this no longer exists due to funding cuts which is a shame. Cgl are picking up the slack from that and whilst I don’t think it’s their fault as an organisation, my views remain strong; that cgl is largely unsuitable for anyone with complex mental health needs, prolonged mental illness and anyone of a neurodivergent disposition

  3. Review titled March Recovery Cafe - Cambs Recovery Service

by Whitby Hyk - Posted on 20 September 2022

When it first got set up i was really enthusiastic, i still am but recently I've gone through a lot of trauma, coming here gives me the motivation to get out the house. We sit here and we talk, not about drugs or drink but about everything. It gives you that little bit of motivation to do something with your life instead of sitting there, doing nothing or wallowing. I come here, i meet good people, i meet new people, new friends. I just hope this carries on and we can get new people in. I think we need to advertise more, not just in CGL but everywhere.

Hi there you are so right! Getting out and about when you really don't want to is something which is hard but can really help. There are other groups you can connect with across the county via zoom which are great for people to feel connected to. All of our service users are aware of what we do, we keep encouraging attendance at the relevant groups. There is so much more to drug and alcohol services than speaking about drugs and alcohol! Keep attending!! Paul Service Manager

  4. Review titled Totally non-judgemental environment

by Ronilac - Posted on 20 July 2023

Several health issues resulted in my drinking increasing to dangerous and probably fatal levels. GPs were unable to offer any help but suggested I try CGL, a drink & drugs help charity. After much procrastination I went to the CGL Huntingdon office. I was taken aback by the level of care and support I received, the totally non-judgemental environment and the quantity of different support pathways that were on offer. The service was open, honest and supportive. I eventually did a detox at a medical facility followed by rehab. I am now 15 months clean and have got my life and health back. I am alive to write this because of CGL, I cannot praise them enough.

  5. Review titled My experience with Cgl

Rated 1 star out of 5

by YSA - Posted on 05 September 2022

This service is not equipped to deal with people with complex needs (Neuro-diverse). The support and aftercare team are nowhere to be seen or found once you complete your detox with cgl manchester. Cgl dismisses you from the service with no action plan in place for the next steps of your recovery. Not everyone is comfortable with attending groups. There should be alternatives in place to accommodate service users’ preferences. I have recently been back in touch with cgl to access the "be smoke-free" service, and I was instantly reminded of why I dislike cgl. The only great thing about cgl is the volunteering counselling services they offer, which I was only given due to being persistent. I would never recommend the service or refer anyone to this service. The service doesn’t care about you, they just see you as a statistic.
