Review titled The most wonderful staff
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Ellie - Posted on 15 May 2023
I just want to say the biggest thank you to all of the staff in the delivery suite, theatres, recovery and Folkestone ward. You were all so amazing, from the second I arrived at the hospital for my induction of Labour. You were all so patient, kind, helpful and reassuring. I got a little stressed and fed up at some point but the midwives were there to support me at all times. The anaesthetists were so wonderful and thorough. You took me through everything you were going to do in detail, so I fully understood, which reassured me massively. The theatre staff who helped deliver my baby safely into the world. My wonderful midwife MS, you were truly amazing and loving and I’m so pleased I was gifted you for the arrival of my baby. The recovery staff and Folkestone ward staff - you were all so helpful and patient. I cant thank you all enough, you’re all truly amazing.

Review titled Parking is a joke
Rated 2 stars out of 5
by R J HARDEN - Posted on 10 May 2023
I had to queue toget in to the CarPark. Then I had to wait for a space to become vacant. For a hospital off this size the parking spaces available are inadequate.

I am sorry to hear you had problems parking at William Harvey Hospital and you had to wait for a space. Our services do advise to allow extra time before your appointment in order to find a space. The car parking is always very busy and there is limited space or resources to add additional parking, as much as we might like to. I can only apologise that this happened. Best wishes

Had a referral from the opticians which was seen to and an appointment was made for two weeks time. i was an emergency appointment but only had to wait 20 minutes to be called in for checks and dilating drops and then was seen by each part of the ophthalmology team and then the doctor very quickly. they then referred me to paediatrics (senua ward) and was sent up there within 15 minutes where i was then seen by the nurse for triage and immediately after the doctor saw me. was referred for an mri at my local hospital (qeqm) which was within 3 weeks and a follow up appointment with canterbury ophthalmology! thank you so much for being able to quickly see me especially as i have had gcses in these last few weeks, so getting answers quickly has made my whole experience less stressful!! thank you once again!

Review titled Excellent care
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Natasha Mathews - Posted on 27 May 2023
I cannot fault the care, support and service provided during our time at William Harvey. Over the course of a 6 day stay for our newborn, we received expert care where everything was explained fully so that we as parents were well informed and understood what was being checked and why. Nothing was roo much trouble for them. All the staff from paediatric doctors, nurses and medical students, in each area of expertise, were friendly, helpful and supportive and made a horrific time with our unwell 2 week old that much more bearable. Thank you, words really can't express the gratitude we have.

Review titled Poor greeting and reception experience
Rated 3 stars out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 26 May 2023
My partner and I visited a couple of days ago, and the support and service provided by the doctors and nurses was exemplary, great work. That said the front reception was extremally poor, very blasé directions, which where incorrect, and more interested in contributing to the "internal gossip" than providing an efficient service. Its what the customer sees first, and that generally impacts the overall experience.

I am sorry that you experienced a less than helpful response at the front reception desk at William Harvey Hospital. I will forward your comments to the team in charge of this. I'm pleased you found the care and support from the doctors and nurses exemplary. You don't say which service this relates to, but I will share your feedback with the hospital's Director of Nursing. Best wishes

Review titled Issues Hygiene & Cambridge K
Rated 2 stars out of 5
by Julie D - Posted on 19 May 2023
When I visited an inpatient on Cambridge K on 18/5/23 I was concerned that there was a lack of hand sanitiser. The dispenser at the entrance door to Channel was empty, and had been for some time. No dispensers were available on the wall racks. I thought hand hygiene for all was important. On Cambridge K, I visited at dinner time and both my friend and the patient in the next bed had their meal tray just left on their side-tables. There was no attempt to move the side-table nearer to the patient, and he wasn't able to adjust the side-table, or move it closer. Dirty cutlery and a cold un-drunk cup of tea remained on the table. The ward was also cluttered. As I was there, I helped my friend to eat his meal, but what would have happened if I weren't there?

I am sorry to hear that when you visited a friend on Cambridge K ward at William Harvey that there was no hand sanitiser available. I will make the service aware of this, but please do feel able to tell the nurse in charge should this happen again. Your concerns regarding people not being assisted with their food and the ward looking cluttered will be raised with the Matron and team. On admittance to the ward patients are assessed to identify those who need assistance with their food and drink, so this can be provided. If your friend, or you on their behalf, with their consent, would like us to look into what happened in this instance please contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on tel: 01227 783145 or email: ekh-tr.pals@nhs.net. PALS are open Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm, except bank holidays. If you phone and get the voicemail please leave a message and the team will get back to you. Best wishes

Review titled I felt my needs as a carer totally disregarded
by Ignored Carer - Posted on 02 June 2023
My mother was admitted to William Harvey Hospital after a TIA / vertigo attack. Whilst there, she developed hospital delirium due to lack of sleep on the ward. Care was OK but the staff hadn’t noticed she is partially sighted and had lost sight. We were asked to bring in her drugs, which we did, but these were left on the top of the locker in the open ward. Staff going in there to retrieve drugs. With dementia patients on the ward, how was this allowed? I was informed that covid was on the ward once I sat down with my mother and my husband, who has motor neurone disease. Being extremely vulnerable himself we therefore couldn’t stay long. I had no conversation with any member of staff about mum’s discharge (not one). I wasn’t considered nor asked what my mum can do with and without help. I wasn’t asked what my caring role for mum was. It’s obvious she isn’t looking after herself, so I would have like to be informed. Under Discharge to Access I should have been. When asked if my mum would be tested for covid before she was returned to my care, I was told no, not unless she was symptomatic - ie a cough. So despite her being in a ward with covid and despite her having cold symptoms, she was returned to my care with my husband, who is extremely vulnerable in terms of covid, without a test. Of course she has covid and therefore I as her carer cannot support her as I can’t bring covid back to my husband. But what is worse than this was the rude way I was spoken to by the ward manager when I asked about it, how I was spoken to when I asked for a discharge plan and how when we arrived when I said I would to collect her, I was told I was early and the EDN (which we still haven’t received by post) was not ready. This was because, and forgive me if you understand the disabled parking issues at the William Harvey Hospital, staff would appreciate that someone with MND and an electrolyte mother who is unable to walk distances needed a disabled parking space which could not be guaranteed at 2 pm during visiting hours. So all in all I felt my needs as a carer totally disregarded. As a partner provider who is facilitating discharge and the availability of a bed on the ward, I’m distressed that my needs were not considered. The NHS has a NHSThinkCarer programme, which it seems as though the East Kent Hospital Trust do not follow or train their staff in.

Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback. I am so sorry to read of your awful experience in relation to your Mother's care and the way you felt you was spoken to. This is not the experience we want anyone to have and your experience certainly does not reflect the values we expect our staff to adhere to. I can appreciate and empathize with how you felt and can only imagine how difficult it is caring for your Mother whilst also dealing with your Husband's MND. If you would like us to look into what happened, please contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on tel: 01227 783145 or email: ekh-tr.pals@nhs.net. My visit to A&E at WHH was painless, efficient and thorough. The staff on night shift on Sun May 7th were all very pleasant and professional, waiting time to see doctor was quick and getting the treatment needed very quick. I was glad too see the lady with coffee and biscuits on her trolley, a much needed boost in the early hours. Thankyou
