  1. Review titled Very poor

Rated 1 star out of 5

My mum is at the end of life stage with severe copd. The hospital is our second home and has been for a number of years. They have always been excellent and really looked after my mum but the past few years especially since covid the hospital has gone extremely downhill. My mum is a regular in the resus dept which has always been fantastic. Resus doctors and nurses have always been excellent and shown care and support towards mum and our family. However once on the wards that's when the problems start. My mum fell out of the bed a few days ago onto the floor and hurt herself. I brought this to the attention of one of the nurses on the ward who said well I do not lock my patients into bed of a night. Why I asked. My mum is under five stone and severely thin. One of the family asked for help to be told I am busy you will just have to wait. My mum was left without oxygen as the nurses had forgotten to reconnect it back onto the wall after doing observations. Until a family member noticed this when visiting. I came to take mum home on wednesday and was told I could not enter as there was flu on the ward. Yet the whole family had been there visiting morning, noon and night for the past week. Most staff are lovely and caring but there are a few young nurses who seem to think they have authority and can speak to you anyway they want. This is the last thing we need as a family who are nursing our mum at the end stage of life. I will not allow it.

We would like to be able to talk to you about this. If you would like to and feel able to do this, please contact patientexperienceandedi@sthk.nhs.uk and one of the team will be able to help you. 2. Review titled Fantastic staff and level of care

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by David Murphy - Posted on 26 February 2024

My mother was recently admitted to Whiston Hospital I would like to say a massive thanks to the Doctor's, Nurses and all staff from ward 3d for their professionalism and the level of care they provided to my mother. They are a credit to themselves and the NHS. All the staff were fantastic but there was one Nurse in particular who was outstanding. Apparently I can't say whether it was a Male or female etc in this review but the person in question was foreign and even though they were constantly busy juggling ten things at once they were always smiling and polite and professional The NHS would crumble without people like this

I took my daughter to A and E with burns on her legs from a hot cup of tea. The nurse practitioner who cared for her was brilliant! Really caring and put my anxious daughter at ease.

  6. Review titled Amazing and outstanding!

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by nicola - Posted on 03 April 2024

My mum who is 80 recently fell and broke her hip, this happened on a Saturday night therefore we did have a little wait for the ambulance, totally understandable. When the paramedics arrived, who I must say were 2 lovely ladies, very caring and sensitive towards my mum, nothing was too much trouble and tried to reassure mum that she would be ok, we got to Whiston at about 5.30am on the Sunday Morning, mum was x-rayed and we had spoken with a doctor within the hour due to how busy A&E was i did think this was outstanding. Once it was confirmed her hip was broken we were straight to a ward. Mum was put on 3Alpha and what can I say regards staff on here, they were all amazing from the Doctors, Nurses too HCA's and also the Student Nurses and Therapy Team nothing was to much trouble for them. Mum suffered from Post Operative delirium which I have never witnessed before, but they were all so reassuring and supportive with me saying this was completely normal, not only did they look after and care for mum they also reassured me! I cannot thank them all enough! Mum has since been transferred to Newton Cottage for rehabilitation and team of amazing and patient focused people every single one of them are worth there weight in gold............thankyou so much for everything.

After visting outpatients on the 19th of Jan I was informed my operation would tkae place on Tue 23rd . However I was phoned on the 22nd to see if I could go in then. I gladly accepted. The care I recived from everyone from ward 3b to the surgoens was first class. One thing I did notice was how the nurses went out of their to make me feel at ease .

  9. Review titled Disappointing

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Jennifer - Posted on 29 January 2024

Visited with 7 year old with severe pain to the ear, walk in sent us to A&E as would not be seen there before closing, due to the wait time when we arrived. Booked in with 4 families ahead of us in the waiting room, triage took approx 30 mins which was odd as there were numerous nurses huddled around the nurses station. Triage then became quicker as more patients arrived. Obs were taken in waiting room by a student nurse, then after 5 mins a qualified nurse took him through to re do obs as his heart rate was to be checked again, but noted as "ok" after being asked if he was an active child. Pain relief was given to help with pain during the wait, this took 1 hour, I was then told the wait was 3 hours. The waiting room became a lot busier and it became obvious he moved down the priority list as people arrived later and were seen ahead of him. The main issue I have with the experience, is that, 2 hours later, a nurse came to the waiting room and announced "ladies and gentlemen the wait is now 7 hours" gave a long pause then said "sorry" shrugging her shoulders, turned away and walked back to the nurse station. It was the tone in the message delivery that struck me the most, it was communicated in such a rude manner, I was quite taken aback by it, could have been handled far better. I checked where we were on the waiting list and was told that there were 9 patients ahead of him, it was clear that everyone who arrived much later were going to be seen ahead of him. I wouldn't have expected a child crying for 3 hours with extreme pain would be classed as a low priority, but your records will show if this was justified. Rather than wait for 10 hours in total which I was told would be the case, I made judgement to care for him myself, at home, rather than sit in a waiting room all night trying to bear the pain. When I advised the nurse I would be leaving the queue she said to "bring him back if he gets worse" - what a bizarre thing to say, I don't know how much worse ear pain needs to be, in order to warrant a doctor to look at it? Needless to say, taking him back would have been pointless. Whilst I appreciate patients are grouped in order of priority, had we have been seen by a doctor during a period of a low number of patients waiting, before the department became extremely busy, I may have felt satisfied. But to be told you have a further 7 hours to wait after already being in a queue to see a doctor for 3 hours, I feel is appalling. Maybe we were just unlucky with the timing, but in order to improve, I would suggest the staff are trained to communicate with patients in a less condescending manner as this could cause conflict. I accept departments being busy, and feel it's fair enough to wait your turn (within reason), however, I continue to question how patients are prioritised. What I struggle to accept, is rudeness, and this is what has made me feel the need to write this review, it needs addressing in order for you to improve.
