  1. Review titled Not a nice experience

by Chloe - Posted on 11 September 2024

I went to the gynaecology department ward B5 6pm Sunday 8th September. After being sent up from urgent care with suspected appendicitis. My experience was a scary one as I was in a lot of abdominal pain. I had my bloods taken and was left to sit in the waiting room until the results came back. I was offered no pain relief at all until I asked for it. And everybody in the waiting room looked fed up. The nursing staff were congregated at the nursing station laughing and joking. They didn't come to check if we were OK until they had a result in to talk to someone. Finally sent for a CT scan. Came back and i was then admitted on to this ward with a suspected twisted ovary. By this time it had been 16 hours of being sat about in pain. I was shown to a bed. Told I was nill by mouth and that she would put me on a fluid drip. I didn't see her for 30 minutes. I wasn't shown how to use the bed. How to get the nurses attention. I wasn't offered a gown. So was left to sit in bed in my dirty clothes. Was not shown where i could wash or if I could have a towel or anything. The only reason I knew was because some of the patients came and showed me. They told me if I want something I need to keep asking because the nursing staff ignore you. It felt like I was more of a hindrance for them. I heard nursing staff gossiping about patients on the ward. Laughing and joking about them. This made me feel really uncomfortable and also scared that I didn't have a voice. That I should shut up because I didn't want them to talk about me too. The only time nurses talked to us was to ask what meds we wanted next. I watched a nurse degrading a trainee nurse that was shadowing her. This was cruel to watch. She looked like she didn't want to be there. when I asked what was going on with me no one knew. They all said something different. I was then all of a sudden being give stockings for surgery for the next morning. I said so can i eat now. She said yea like I was supposed to know this. Again I felt no proper care was given and certainly no clear information. We all felt ignored. The next day I woke up prepared for surgery. Only to be told that they weren't doing the surgery anymore. And she said oh did no one come to tell you last night? I said no they dressed me in stockings and left me. She dressed me In these whilst I was still in my dirty clothes. The junior doctor gave me a very short speech about why they weren't doing it. I said I was still in the same pain today [Tuesday 10th) as I was when I came in. Asked what could happen. She said your cyst could rupture, stay the same or grow. She gave me no aftercare advise and left me. The nurse said I could go. I asked her for pain relief prescription. I waited for 30 minutes. The nurses then got into an argument and were shouting in the corridor at each other. I then had to go ask again. She said oh sorry I forgot. Finally left feeling dirty and left to rot. Feel sorry for the patients there

  2. Review titled Wonderful staff

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 10 September 2024

Admitted with acute rectal bleeding after waiting in a+e. Seen by doctor and surgical team in b5 ward and subsequently moved to c6 ward. Beds quickly available. The surgical teams in the wards and endoscopy were exceptional, professional, thorough and reassuring as was the consultant. Tests (ct scan, flexi colonoscopy, bloods) were swiftly put into place and results were really quickly returned. But my main praise was with the nursing staff in both b5 and c6 wards. Each nurse/dr checked for identity before administering any medication or tests (very reassuring). It's only when you're lying there in bed as a patient do you see how professional and kind they are to all patients not just to me. Each nurse and Health Care workerss including two student nurses were efficient, thoroughly diligent and attentive at all times day and night, and treated elderly patients with utmost dignity and kindness - making sure they were comfortable, given water, a cuppa, food, light, and all the necessary medical observations taken throughout the night with quiet reassurance. Any buzzer from a patient was attended to immediately. The nurses spoke to each patient in a way which was so professional yet personalised. One nurse had a pronounced accent which one or two elderly patients (who may also have had hearing difficulties) found difficult to understand, but she persevered patiently with questions to find out how they felt and whether they needed anything. They were always visible when needed and provided a very reassuring presence in the ward. The last time I was admitted to a hospital was aged four in 1965 and so I had no idea what to expect. I was there for three nights and it was a real eye-opener for me.

  7. Review titled Disappointing experience

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Ash - Posted on 30 August 2024

I attended the A&E with my 10 month old child late on the evening and most of the staff were rude and seemed like they couldn't be bothered to be there. One health care assistant was very helpful when taking my child's observations and was the only member of staff that actually interacted with him. The triage nurse was rude and dismissive and didn't even acknowledge my child. I understand that he is a baby, but it was the childrens A&E department. Information clearly wasn't passed on between members of staff as when we finally did see the doctor he didn't know what the problem was. He did a very poor check over of my son and then told us it was 'probably' a viral infection. He gave no information on what to do about his symptoms or medication to give and told us he would get a nurse to take a urine sample. We waited for this to happen while all members of staff sat behind the desk on their phones and made no effort to do this. In the end we asked if we could get it done through the GP and they said okay and we left. It turns out my child had tonsillitis and had a temperature of over 39 degrees for the next day until I could get a GP appointment where they gave us some antibiotics. I would not return here if you paid me and I definitely wouldn't recommend coming here.

  8. Review titled Great experience

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Danielle - Posted on 16 August 2024

My experience on the maternity unit was brilliant. The staff work so hard to provide a excellent service and it was greatly appreciated by myself, partner and new baby. Having had my baby via c section and then readmitted due to an infection 5 days later I have seen almost all aspects of care they provide. They were always prompt with answering nurse call buzzers, answered any queries I had with compassion and patience and they were very kind and friendly From the kicthen/domestic staff, the CSW's, midwives, theatre staff, security staff, doctors, they were all phenomenal! I should imagine the security staff do a thankless job and don't get the credit and recognition they deserve, so a special shout out to them! Thank you guys!
