  1. Review titled Inappropriate conversation

by Janet Cook - Posted on 03 May 2024

I attended ward 8 with my foster child who is aged 14. On arrival we met a lovely nurse who took his obs and personal details discreetly. We were then seen by 3 junior/trainee female doctors who again asked questions discreetly and with respect. When the nurse practitioner arrived she openly and loudly asked “what’s the situation here then is it fostering/guardianship/adoption/child looked after?” All necessary information to be gathered but this was private to the foster child and should have been asked privately not shared with everyone in earshot or in the manner it was. She examined him and said she was not going to call ENT as in her opinion it wasn’t that bad. Despite being referred by the GP as the patient was having breathing difficulties due to the size of the tonsils. The nurse practitioner said this was not what she was presented with and we were made to feel like we and the GP had lied. I explained that he was struggling to breath and couldn’t lie down or eat as his throat was blocked by the size of his swollen tonsils. The nurse practitioner diagnosed that he could sleep sitting up and didn’t have to lie down. And laughed! When we said we were hoping he could have the tonsils removed she literally guffawed and said “not a chance”. This was very upsetting for the young child to be faced with such abruptness and cruel bedside manner. He was in considerable discomfort and this was the 6 th time he’s had tonsillitis since Christmas and is exhausted and desperate for help. Even if that was the case that he couldn’t have them removed the message should have been delivered with care and understanding. This was definitely not the case. We were made to feel like we were wasting her time and should wait for our appointment in Blackpool hospital next week. I have lots of experience dealing with NHS staff from years of caring for young people and my own children. Never have I witnessed such arrogance and appalling behaviour. I have tried to convince the child in question that his appointment at Blackpool will not be anything like the one he has just experienced and am trying hard to keep him positive. He is still in a considerable amount of pain, still isn’t eating or lying down which is impacting his sleep so to add an enormous worry that he will be treated so poorly at his next appointment is not helping him recover. I feel that his personal information was shared inappropriately and unnecessarily, his feelings were not taken into consideration in fact they were completely disregarded and he was made to feel insignificant and unimportant.

Wrote 4 reviews will not publish as not what they want to hear. What is the point if you only take good reviews. It is not a real opinion of the hospital. Experience April 2024 5pm until 1am the next day. A lot had been there much longer. 91 year old lady 999 to hospital went to be with her whilst she was dealt with.

Went in for appendectomy, ward staff were heroes at such a busy time. Yet I was always looked after and my needs served. Thank you to them and to the surgeons who did such an excellent job.

  6. Review titled Fabulous compassionate care

Rated 5 stars out of 5

Shout out to the SAU, arrived on the Saturday night in pain, tired after long day in urgent care and anxious to next step in my care. (To be told you will need surgery is overwhelming). I was soon as relaxed as I could be, nurses with the human touch each and every one of them, sorry can’t remember names. All friendly and chatty and made me feel so relaxed and looked after. Each part of my care was explained fully, by Doctor dealing with me, and each of nurses dealing with me. I was particularly embarrassed about an aspect of me being laid bare, the empathy and compassion that was shown was fab. I was put at ease by each one of them and no judgement shown for my silly fear. It had been a stressful accident and mentally I was feeling drained and scared, this was picked up on and all my fears addressed. I left after surgery very relaxed, What more could I ask for?. Thanks to all on SAU you are all a credit to your professions. Another thing that really stood out was just how immaculate the unit/ bays were, any dressings tidied away and areas cleaned thoroughly. It shone out that it is a well led unit with a close working team. The team at patient care at the forefront, they went above and beyond in what is such difficult times in the NHS being under such pressure. I do hope the team in SAU get a massive pat on the back. Thank you C, L

I wa dealt with quickly and efficiently from stat to finish. From reception, to triage, to x-ray and plastic surgery (stitches on my thumb), the staff were caring, friendly and efficient. I was seen quickly and the whole visit from start to finish was less than 4 hours. A huge thanks to the whole team.

  9. Review titled A n E Visit

I had a seizure and on arrival to ANE at 1am was seen by a doctor at 9am. Tests and scans were done and I was given an IV drip and put back in the waiting room. 7:30pm my sats are recorded, blood pressure and oxygen. I’m still in the waiting room. 3am roles around I ask what’s going on and was told I was already discharged. The staff member stated I must’ve gone to the toilet they called my name and I was crossed off the list. So I was sat there no sleep seizure I had hit my head woke up covered in blood and vomit couldn’t remember my name or address for 20 minutes and that’s the treatment I get.

  10. Review titled life saving

Rated 5 stars out of 5

I was admitted for wrist-hand surgery following a chainsaw event and was operated on by a superb surgeon and his team. The reconstruction of my vascular, tendon and nerve tissues was just in time to save my fingers and the surgeon and his colleagues did a fantastic job. My post-op care was just as wonderful and thanks to all your staff, great and small, I have my life saved, my hand saved and a chance to live another life. A big, very big thank you to all. What a lucky man am I.
