  1. Review titled Surgery team are amazing--after care needs some work

Rated 4 stars out of 5

    by Li Douglas-Gibbins - Posted on 07 January 2023

I had my gallbladder removed in December. The surgical team were amazing! More praise needs to be given to the surgical nurses and the wonderful Anaesthetic team who were angels! My surgeon was amazing and went out of his way to place my surgical scars within the lines of my stomach tattoo resulting in them being hidden--I did not ask, I was expecting my tattoo to be ruined--but the care and attention was wonderful. I can't fault the surgical team. Things went a bit pear shaped in recovery. Now, I can not fault the empathy and support from the recovery team--however there needs to be some training done regarding food allergies. I have a milk allergy and am lactose intolerant. While other patients were offered food, I was made to feel like a nuisance. I had a lovely cup of tea and milk alternatives were offered but when I asked for something to eat having not eaten for almost 24 hours--confusion. A nurse offered me ham. I said, "A ham sandwich?" And their response was, "No a slice of ham." I was then brought a whole, unopened loaf of white bread, with a slice of ham on a plate and it was left on my table. Thankfully another member of staff told the nurse to actually make me a sandwich. Sadly, what was offered was the ham placed between two unsliced pieces of bread--no spread. Due to having been under general anaesthetic I was unable to swallow the dryness of the food offered. I asked for jelly, or perhaps a yogurt but there was nothing soft. There just seemed to be an absolute confusion over dietry requirements as if being allergic to milk was some great unknown they had never seen before. I suggested the vegan options--sadly there was only one which was a salad--too dry and I could not swallow it. The advice, when i was in tears and confused, and feeling judged by the staff was, "Next time bring your own food." I completely understand that recovery is for recovery, but it needs to be a safe space and the emotional side should be considered. Having a patient witnessing other patients being offered biscuits and all sorts while they can not eat anything due to dietary requirements is distressing. When I was in tears, I was then simply told, "We are trying!" Having worked in the nhs, on the neuro surgical post op ward in Nottingham, I know what food is available within the nhs. I understand it can be a challenge, and things run out--but surely when a nurse is caring for someone, they would be proactive and double check something was available. Has the NHS run out of the dairy free ice cream? Jelly? Vegan soft diets for post op patients? Or is this just Derby? For other hospitals have shown full awareness of food allergies and dietary requirements.

  3. Review titled Wonderful care

Rated 5 stars out of 5

I attended Derby Royal Hospital as a daycare patient to undergo Endovenous radiofrequency ablation to varicose veins, the end of December 2022. My whole experience can only be rated as excellent. The consultant surgeon, anaesthetist, theatre staff, after surgery day care nurses and everyone involved went above and beyond in their care and expertise. Thank you all.

  4. Review titled Urgent care at royal derby

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 30 December 2022

A&E staff completed my obs at the reception desk not in a private room along with out patients. We was able to hear all about their health issues. When we was sent to the urgent care waiting area we was told the wait time is 3 hours. We have now been waiting over 4 hours any have yet to speak to anyone. Overall very poor experience lots of very frustrated people no communication. It’s often the little things that make the difference and after reading the website it’s clear they over promise and under deliver.

  5. Review titled Disappointed with my hubby's care

    by Wileg53 - Posted on 23 December 2022

He was admitted to Derby royal two weeks ago because of ulcerated leg. He had scans and blood clots. He has had a major operation on his leg.. I am very disappointed with the nursing staff that supposed to look after him. I feel like they expect him to do everything for himself.. I feel like they don’t listen to anything he says, and expected him to put a blanket on the bed himself. that’s not right. If they move the table away from him they should put it back.

  6. Review titled Amazing staff

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Chloe Shaw - Posted on 11 December 2022

Being a first time mum I had no idea what to expect with labour. I felt like I had quite a traumatic birth with an unplanned c section but the whole time I was supported and well cared for. The midwives and doctors were just absolutely incredible and because of them I would feel safe to go through the whole experience again. They made me feel so comfortable and relaxed the whole time. Thank you!

  7. Review titled Pharmacy consistently causes serious delays on discharge

Rated 4 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 24 December 2022

You need to have a separate heading for 'pharmacy'. This is either seriously inadequate or very inefficient. This is compounded by clunky processes around sign off and discharge. Time after time one hears of people waiting a whole day for pharmacy items which delays their discharge. I have just observed a gentleman leave who has been waiting more than a day for pharmacy items. This kind of thing is too common and unacceptable at a service level. This is sometimes because of delay in sign off from doctors (who are very busy), delay in compiling prescriptions, or simple errors. The overall conclusion is that the pharmacy is inadequate and over-stretched for a hospital of this size.

  8. Review titled Thank you

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Helen - Posted on 01 December 2022

I had my baby on Labour ward and then had a 5 day stay on ward 314. The care I received in both areas was outstanding - everyone I came into contact with was kind, caring, informative and gave me full confidence. Specifically the midwife support workers on each shift were so helpful at answering my silly questions and supporting with feeding. I also really appreciated the neonatal dr taking the time to come and check in with me twice daily and make sure I was clear on my babies plan. Whilst staying in hospital for 5 days was disappointing I do not feel that we could have received better care. The only room for improvement would be somewhere more comfortable for babies dad/birth partner to stay - the first night was hard without my partner but whilst visiting times would have allowed him to stay there was no where comfortable for him to sit overnight other than a very upright chair - a recliner chair or something would have been perfect and would have meant babies dad could have stayed which would have been a nicer start to parenthood for him.

  9. Review titled All staff very friendly and attentive but no substance.

Rated 3 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 11 March 2024

Severe Tinnitus and unilateral hearing loss. Advised that CBT has strong evidence, yet not referred to one. Had to get bog standard CBT through Trent. 1st session therapist said twice it's not a treatment for tinnitus. Had 7 sessions and then told me funding had expired. Had zoom meeting with the most well known tinnitus researcher, who wrote me a prescription. When I told the inner ear specialist, they said 'Who is that?' I was crestfallen. Clearly the gap between research and the clinic at this hospital is the size of a large ocean. Still suffering with no support!!

  10. Review titled Said shes Specialist nurse

Rated 3 stars out of 5

by Rajni kumari - Posted on 23 November 2022

I name (rk) Been going here for months in gau for daily injections, husband always comes with me, today 23/11/22 at around 10am, the nurse wouldn't let my husband in when it was my turn, saying she needed to talk to me alone, this never has happened in all the months we have been going before, she didn't allow my husband in until she was about to give me the injection, she had an attitude the way she talked to my husband, she said she is a specialist nurse if she is why when she gave me the injection it hurt so badly it bought tears to my eyes when its never happened before with other nurses she just stuck the needle into me as if she was in a rush, also telling me to take my tablets every 6 hours when I've been told everyday to take them every 8 hours, with the other nurses this never happens they are more patient and understanding, also I didn't like her asking personal questions about if I'm safe at home, we go to gau unit where we are feeling sensitive as it is and to ask personal family questions when no other nurses don't, I found this very disrespectful, my husband is with me he is there to support and comfort me, this nurse needs to change her attitude in the way she talks to patients and the way she goes about being a nurse there are nurses that are a lot better and caring than this "specialist nurse" or go and work in a prison
