  1. Review titled I wish to express my heartfelt gratitude

    by waltzmw67 - Posted on 29 October 2023

I have been dealing with a recurring skin issue that flared up for the past four years. Despite various consultations, the root cause of this problem remained elusive. Consequently, I was referred to the dermatology department at the Royal Cornwall Hospital. I had previously undergone multiple consultations, yet the source of my skin problem had proved elusive. In order to identify potential contact reactions, I was subsequently referred to undergo patch testing, which was scheduled to take place over the course of one week, with visits to the department throughout the week. On the first day, the kind and professional nurses at the department applied 50 patches to my back. These patches needed to remain undisturbed until the following visit on Wednesday. Their purpose was to assess my skin's reaction to 50 different products or components commonly found in various products. On the next visit, the nurses removed the patches and marked the corresponding areas on my skin. This was done to monitor any delayed reactions that might manifest in the future. Finally, on the last day, the nurses, along with the dermatologist, meticulously analysed the results and provided me with patient information leaflets detailing any identified allergies. Some of these results were unexpected, while others confirmed previous assessments. I had previously tried numerous remedies, including different body creams, avoiding certain cleaning products, and steering clear of items or products I suspected might be triggering the issue. Unfortunately, none of these approaches had proven effective. Although the process of patch testing might seem demanding due to the need for three visits to the dermatology department in a single week, it is unquestionably worthwhile, as it ensures a comprehensive assessment of potential contact allergies. I wish to express my heartfelt gratitude to the Royal Cornwall Hospital and the Dermatology department for conducting this essential test.

My Mother has recently had surgery and our family have been impressed with and grateful for both the skill and kindness of the Oncology and Anaesthesia team. They helped us cope with a distressing time and went to great lengths to get this right for us. Thank you also to all who cared for her in the high dependency ward until we were able to bring her home.

  4. Review titled A thank you to RCHT's Gastro and Liver Unit

    by lepusxt67 - Posted on 12 October 2023

My wonderful wife was cared for in the Gastro and Liver Unit in Treliske hospital in Truro, Cornwall for almost 6 weeks. I visited her every day of that stay. While there she was given the news that she was nearing the end of her life. With the support of the hospital's palliative care team, we managed to get her home 3 days before she died. During her time in the Unit I witnessed many occasions where staff with all sorts of job roles showed their caring and kindness towards her. The 2 main catering team members were incredibly flexible in trying to help her find something appetising to eat and had such a lovely manner in their interactions with her. The ward clerks would always help if they could or find someone who could help if they couldn't. Many HCAs assisted her but 4 in particular took time with her, won her trust and formed bonds with her. She had not got out of bed at all until one day when I went in and found one of them had managed to get her to use a walking frame. The OT who worked most with her also gained her trust and having done so helped give her the emotional and psychological strength - despite her physical weakness and at times significant pain - to make it home. 3 of the nurses looked after her regularly and were never anything but full of compassion - just as a good nurse should be. She also had a lot of interaction with one of the junior doctors who took time to help us with questions or issues despite many other demands on her time. I have no doubt all these folk were won over by my wife because that was what she did naturally, but they all went the extra mile at times. I cannot say thank you enough to them for making what was a truly awful situation that little bit more bearable.

  5. Review titled Sharing information with third parties/other providers

by HondaJohn - Posted on 07 September 2023

I feel discriminated against by not owning a non tech mobile. Why do hospitals insist on having questionnaires I can’t access and need to ask friend or relatives to complete? Even after having a nurse pre-assessment where I have given this information. The forms are very detailed, time consuming and complex and not designed for a layman.

  6. Review titled Left feeling abandoned and unsupported

    by Letdownjuly20 - Posted on 29 December 2023

After having my second baby I was told he had a tongue tie but the infant feeding team wouldn’t be able to see me for 5 days. I went home and struggled with breastfeeding, despite breastfeeding my first baby. I started getting pain in my breast and he started to become jaundiced. We spent the first fortnight going back and forth to hospital for blood tests to check his jaundice, it was incredibly stressful and I feel we had no support from the midwives. I messaged my midwife for feeding advice and they advised to start expressing to take the strain off my sore side. I didn’t see a midwife at all after I gave birth, just two support workers who I found very unhelpful. The first told me I should be feeding my son far too much milk, they only realised when my husband re-did the maths and questioned it. The second said that’s because I'm not feeding him enough when his jaundice was worsening, which almost reduced me to tears. I developed mastitis because he wasn’t latching effectively and eventually after 5 days he was seen and I was told he had a very significant tongue tie which was difficult to divide. Once that was sorted and I’d had the antibiotics I was hoping our breastfeeding journey would improve but I had then been discharged from the midwife and the health visitors were nowhere to be seen. I felt so let down. He still wasn’t latching effectively and I was in pain every time he tried to feed so I started introducing formula as I was worried his jaundice would return. Now, a few months down the line, he is mostly formula fed and I feel really sad about it. I feel like if we had been seen sooner than 5 days I wouldn’t have got mastitis, his jaundice wouldn’t have been so prolonged and we would’ve had a better chance to breastfeed as I did with my daughter. When he was a few weeks old we were admitted to Polkerris unexpectedly for IV antibiotics. On admission we were seen by a registrar who I found incredibly rude, they talked about my son to another doctor with their back to me. They were pointing to his birthmarks and saying that’s normal, that’s normal, that one’s not normal, we’ll have to scan him. They then left the room without even explaining to me what they meant. I questioned it with several nurses who said there was nothing in my notes about it. Then a few days later another doctor walked in and asked where’s this abnormal birthmark? The nurses on the ward were fantastic, but I found the medical staff terrible. I kept thinking why have you specialised in paediatrics when you have absolutely no empathy? I feel there was absolutely no support from the midwives once we left the hospital. I feel so let down and frankly embarrassed at the poor care. Both in the community and from the doctors on Polkerris. I spoke to a few friends who had also recently had babies and they also said they also had very little support after. One friend told me it was due to low staffing, funding etc, but I don’t think that’s entirely true. There’s dozens of specialist midwives in the hospital, so there should be some money and time put into community. What saddens me most is the story is identical with my first and I raised concerns then, yet 3 years down the line nothing has changed. It feels like when you’re pregnant you’re so closely monitored and so well cared for, and once the baby is here you’re on your own, which is when you need the help most. I’m now struggling mentally and have only now really felt like I can talk about it all. I’ve not bonded with my son as I was expecting and I’m sure that’s because of all the stress we had in the first few weeks and because I haven’t been able to feed him as I’d wanted. I feel that postnatal care in the community needs looking into, because it just doesn’t exist and women and their babies are being let down and left feeling abandoned and unsupported.

  7. Review titled Thank you for being so caring and professional

    by waterbb37 - Posted on 01 September 2023

I wish to say a big thank you to all the staff on the Same Day Assessment Clinic, in which I recently spent 7 hours. I could not have been looked after any better. They made sure I had drinks and food in between waiting for blood tests, ECG and a head scan. Thank you for being so caring and professional. I also attend Treliske eye clinic for infections for macular degeneration, where I am also looked after very well by the wonderful staff and am very grateful for all they are doing for me.

  9. Review titled Every staff member was approachable and kind

    by cheetahrn64 - Posted on 19 October 2023

On the second day of my holiday in Cornwall I was rushed into A and E with acute pancreatitis. This was a scary time for not only for me but also all of my family who were also on holiday with me and my husband. The care and treatment I received for the whole eleven days I was in your hospital was outstanding. Every single member of staff was approachable and kind. I could not have received better care I believe anywhere else in the world. My family and I would like to extend our huge gratitude to all: the A and E staff, the whole of the Pendennis Ward team, the surgeons and everybody else involved with my care. To you all I would like to tell you that you are all an amazing, dedicated, professional and wonderful group of people. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

  10. Review titled Directional mapping

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Mr Pete Oldham - Posted on 31 August 2023

I had to attend Treliske for an MRI and having checked the location of the MRI department online, I followed the signs to the Tower where I was directed to the basement. On arrival the sign said "MRI no longer here", fearing that I would be late for the appointment, I sought the help of staff and was directed to the Trelawny suite .... where we had passed 10 minutes before. I was partially to blame as my letter made no mention of the Tower, so the online map of Treliske is obviously out of date. Having said that, the MRI staff were lovely and very helpful.
