  2. Review titled Fantastic Service

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Peter Burkill - Posted on 09 May 2023

I had a stroke on 24 December 2022 evening and was admitted to Treliske. The two ambulance mean who picked me up were fantastic, phoning ahead for my treatment. I was given the fast track treatments (thrombolised) and looked after well. I was in Treliske for 3 days and discharged. I am still recovering well - thanks to our NHS guys. My sincere thanks to all.

  4. Review titled Disappointing experience

Rated 2 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 23 December 2022

I would firstly like to say that I highly praise all medical staff currently working in these difficult times while being understaffed and underpaid. I would however like to say that I was recently taken to the surgical ward after experiencing severe abdominal pain. They did all possible tests on me and the conclusion was it was my Crohn’s disease causing me problems and rather than refer me to the relevant department they discharged me saying as they were surgical they couldn’t help me. Not only this but every nurse/registrar/doctor I spoke to on the ward had no idea what the others had said to me and had to keep finding out and following up everything. I ended up telling everyone the same thing all the time and telling them what the previous person had said to me. Surely this should have been in my notes and would have saved a lot of time wasting? The worst thing was they told me I was being discharged around 6pm but didn’t actually discharge me until 11pm. I had no transport and sat in the main reception crying on how I would get home. Luckily a friend got out of bed to drive 25mins to collect me. Is this normal and a safe practice to discharge people so late? A taxi home would have cost me £65 which I just didn’t have and is quite frankly extortionate. I’ve never known a hospital discharge people at that time of the night in any of the hospitals I’ve stayed in in my years. Staff and cleaners were chatting about their personal lives very loudly from 5am and keeping people up who had already been waiting to be diagnosed all night who desperately needed rest. This was not just on the surgical areas it was in the ED too. I came home still in pain, exhausted and bewildered from what I’d just been through.

Firstly, Please accept our apologise for the delay in getting back to you on here. Thank you for taking the time to share us with your story. I was disappointed to see that your experience at the Royal Cornwall Hospital was negative on this occasion. It must have been a very worrying time for you coming to hospital with severe abdominal pain. That is good that the nurses were able to perform the necessary tests for you and come to a conclusion regarding your pain, but I understand the lack of communication between staff must have been frustrating. I was also sorry to hear about the lack of communication regarding your discharge, leaving you without transport to get home. I will share your story with the department you visited so they can reflect on your experience and make improvements where possible. If, however, you would like to raise your concerns formally, you can contact the Patient and Family Experience team (Complaints) using the details below: Email: rcht.patientexperience@nhs.net Tel: 01872 252 793 Best wishes Megan

  5. Review titled Hospital School

by Mummy Laura - Posted on 09 December 2022

I went into RCH today for one of a million clinic appointments for my son and took a detour to the 5th floor paediatric ward to see if his last hospital school artwork was on the wall - and it was! And it looked amazing (it's part of the Henri Matisse collage). He was so proud of it he made me take a photo and send it to his head teacher (he's 6). Please thank your hospital school teacher for me. He has been in and out of hospital his entire life and this is the first time he's ever got his work on the wall. This is a big thing for him.

Dear Mummy Laura, Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such lovely feedback. I am delighted that your son’s artwork was on display for him to see, and that he was able to share this with his head teacher. It is wonderful to know that the hospital school can contribute so positively to a child’s experience of multiple hospital visits. I will ensure that your kind words are shared with the hospital school teacher and with our paediatric teams. Thank you again and I hope that your son is currently well and excited about Christmas.

  6. Review titled My son and the care he received

by Raffina - Posted on 14 December 2022

My son, perforated his ear drum. We were initially seen at minor injuries before being sent to Treliske Royal Cornwall Hospital to the paediatric Emergency Department. The triage nurse who saw us in the paediatric ED department was extremely friendly. However we were seen by 2 members of staff from the ENT team. I really must show such appreciation for these two members of staff. They were professional and friendly and they made my son laugh and feel at ease. They were very attentive and caring and took extra time to explain to me my sons condition and what I needed to do to care from him over coming weeks. I feel they went out of their way and above and beyond to provide really outstanding care and they were so friendly - you could see this was more than a job to them. They were incredible with my son and spent lots of time talking with him about everything and anything. You should be proud to have them in your staffing team! I’ve never experienced such great and friendly care at treliske before!

  7. Review titled Unsafe Discharge

by Scrabanger - Posted on 29 December 2022

[Unsure about 'Daily living support'] I have just been informed that despite the concerns raised by the ambulance technicians when her long term partner was taken into Treliske, that she has been told by the ward staff to collect him and take him home by car as he is being discharged with a zimmerframe and that they will try get a OT to supply additional aids sometime in the future? I find it really unbelievable that not one of the concerns were acted on about his limited mobility issues and unsuitability of the house in it's present state for someone with is so restricted by their mobility. In my view the house should of had, at the very least, an assessment prior to his discharge by an OT and the correct mobility aids installed, or provided prior to him being discharged. I find the total failure of Treliske to adhere to their own adult policies unbelievable. He is being discharged with just a Zimmer frame, which cannot even fit into the only bathroom in the property, let alone can it be used to get to the toilet. He certainly needs a commode at the very least, and rails. His GP is concerned, as were the ambulance staff who took him to A+E last week, about the total lack of support to facilitate his very limited mobility and the frequent falls he has been experiencing. Please could you explain why these facilities were not implemented prior to his discharge and explain the reasoning why it is an exception to the policies published by the Trust?

  8. Review titled Hearing aid service

by Retired scientist - Posted on 14 December 2022

I brought my NHS hearing aids to the Royal Cornwall Hospital at Treliske for service and repair having worn them for over 7 years. I had contacted Audiology Workshop in advance who reassured me they could be checked and returned promptly. Given the national postal strike I decided to hand them in at the Audiology Dept reception instead of post them. I was impressed by the very helpful and efficient staff and delighted to receive continued care under the NHS. [Unsure about 'Staff skills']

  9. Review titled An outstanding and professional service all round

by NKHibbs - Posted on 12 January 2023

As a regular visitor to Cornwall, we had cause to use the A&E and Hospital services for the first time over the busy New Year period. My wife unfortunately fell down a flight of stairs. We used the 111 service immediately and again the next morning. As she had a suspected hip injury, on 111's advice we went to A&E at Truro. She was quickly assessed, X-rayed and within four hours on a ward with a confirmed broken hip awaiting hip replacement surgery. The operation was carried out and she was back home two days later. An outstanding and professional service all round in times of difficulty. Thought you should know with our thanks.

It is lovely to see the service you received was both outstanding and professional. I hope that your wife is now recovering well at home, and that her fall hasn't put you off coming to our lovely county again in the future! Best wishes, Jess
