  2. Review titled Fantastic care

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Debbie lancaster - Posted on 05 April 2023

I just wanted to let you know about the fantastic team you have on ICU. My Son aged 23yrs arrested on Wednesday night with irreversible brain damage. From the moment we arrived on ICU the staff were truly amazing. The doctor informed us what was going on straight away, he was so caring and held my hand when I nearly collapsed. When the rest of the family arrived the Consultant sat us all down, and explained what had happened to our son and unfortunately he was brain dead. We us you can imagine we’re all devastated. There is no easy way of saying that to a family but the consultant had such empathy and was so caring we as a family were so touched by the way he explained things. The charge nurse Was so caring and supportive to my 15yr old daughter, given her a blanket that was made by volunteer’s beautiful it is on her bed. We all had hearts given to us and handprints of our son These small gifts give us such comfort, please thx the people who made them. The nurses by Our sons bed side not only looked after Our son amazingly but also looked after us. They cried with us when Our son died. Even having a patient for such a short time on their unit must be so hard on them when the patient is so young. The transplant team who asked us if we would like to donate Our sons organ we’re very caring, we agreed but unfortunately Our son died before this could happen. Friday was the most saddest difficult days of our lives, having the brilliant staff around us made it a bit easier and knowing that Our son was surrounded by not only his family but also people who tried so hard to save him and treated him with such compassion and dignity. These people are absolutely the most amazing people we have ever meet. Thank you doesn’t seem enough for all what they have done. Many many times I hear people criticise the NHS about poor service, perhaps those people out there should hear this story. We will always remember the kindest of those beautiful people, and they will hold a special place in our hearts. Please let all the staff that they are truly angels and have given us such comfort. Brilliant team.

Dear Debbie Firstly, please allow me to offer my sincere condolences to you and your family for the loss of your son. I cannot begin to imagine what you are all going through, but know that it must be an incredibly sad and difficult time for you. To have found the time and strength to acknowledge the care provided by the ICU team in your post on the NHS Reviews website is quite remarkable. We are all very appreciative of your kind words and grateful that you found comfort within the team caring for you and your son. Thank you for such a thoughtful post, during what must be a devastating time for you. Please know that you and your family are in our thoughts, particularly of those who were so involved with your son’s care. Kind regards Emily Parker Matron for Critical Care and Respiratory

  3. Review titled Excellent service

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Bridget Andrews - Posted on 03 March 2023

Went in the Short Stay Unit after being referred by my Dr and was thoroughly checked over for breathlessness ie, ECG, CT scan using dye due to family medical history, chest xray etc. Staff could not have been more helpful, friendly and professional. Thought then service was quick considering how many people were in the waiting room.

  4. Review titled Superb emergency angioplasty

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Stephen Lockhart - Posted on 18 March 2023

I experienced severe chest pain and was very impressed by the urgent, coordinated management by South Central Ambulance Service and the Cardiology unit at the Royal Berks. The ambulance arrived at my home very rapidly and the two paramedics identified that I had experienced a myocardial infarction within minutes. They communicated with the hospital and rushed me to the hospital where the cardiology staff were prepped and ready for me, with my blocked artery cleared within an hour or so of dialling 999. Throughout, both the ambulance and hospital staff were friendly, calm and very competent. Superb, world class practice!

  5. Review titled Exemplary Service

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Heather Eves - Posted on 09 March 2023

My husband has appendix cancer 3 years ago and this week had annual CT scan for check up. A reminder sent and appointment booked. The service was brilliant and even an email from Colorectal nurse very comforting. He is also under Cardiac Care after a stent 3 years ago. Once again all the checks and reassurance excellent and staff so reassuring explaining everything. He was in A & E last month and all so thorough and saw a Cardiologist 2 days later who was so thorough and reassuring. We all know the NHS gets bad press in the papers but can say that any help we have needed from 2 departments has been exemplary and we all know all the staff under such pressure to perform but can only say they are magnificent. We have nothing but praise for the RBH from people on Reception to the two departments I have mentioned. Very grateful to all but this sort of headline never makes the news or press.

  6. Review titled Acute medical care ward

Rated 2 stars out of 5

    by Simon Mazonowicz-Jones - Posted on 17 March 2023

Had a recent visit to a and e which ended up with me being allocated a bed in the acute medical unit. I then got moved to a separate room as I was tested for covid. Whilst I appreciate the need for being isolated the room was unbearably hot as had a room length radiatior on full and the there was no through breeze. I spent half a bay baking in there which was appaling and was told I'd need to have the door closed overnight... As was on steroids that day I knew I wouldn't be able to manage that. I also got missed on a meal and drinks runs so I found the experience much poorer than any other stay so far

Dear Mr Mazonowicz-Jones We are very sorry to read that you have had a less than positive experience on our Acute Medical Unit (AMU). We understand that the Matron for the unit has since been to see you to discuss the issues and to apologise in person for the temperature in the side room and for you missing a meal. We understand that you have regularly been offered food and drinks since that occasion and that you are now satisfied with the room temperature and the care you are receiving on AMU. If any other issues arise, please don’t hesitate to contact the nurse in charge or ask to speak to the matron again. Patient Experience Team, Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust

  7. Review titled Great practice, care and professionalism

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Mark Mattimore - Posted on 11 April 2024

I have been under your urology department since March of last year after suffering an serious infection caused by an enlarged prostate. From my first contact with the admin team through the various tests on the ward and subsequent surgery, I have been tremendously impressed by the professionalism, sensitivity and dedication of all the staff i have encountered along the way. Although they would have seen 100's if not 1000's of people like me I always felt that I was the first person they had dealt with always having the time to explain what was happening and why and patiently answering any questions I asked (which were many!). I cannot praise and thank them enough. The upshot of all the tests was to conduct a Rezume procedure to address my enlarged but thankly benign prostate. The consultant, who I appreciate can not be named, was superb as was his anaesthetist. They carefully explained the procedure and risks in language I could understand and were understanding of my wish to have a general rather than local anaesthetic. The procedure has been a complete success and for the first time in several years I feel 'normal' in terms of my bathroom requirements, no longer needing to get up several times a night or having the sudden crippling urge to urinate usually at the most inconvenient time! They made clear it doesn't work for everyone but thankfully it has for me. Literally today I have been signed off as 'normal' and discharged from your care after yet another very professionally conducted telephone appointment with one of your doctors. I can not thank you all enough and just feel very fortunate to have such a wonderful service on my doorstep staffed by dedicated, caring and highly professional individuals. You are all great ambassadors for the NHS.

  8. Review titled So impressive.

Rated 5 stars out of 5

    by Margaret B - Posted on 14 March 2023

Being admitted via ambulance to A&E is always a frightening experience. The staff could not have been more effective in both being efficient but also caring in spite of being ‘run off their feet.’ Understanding, kind and helpful to a fault! The doctor who ‘dealt ‘ with me was beyond caring and into a level of care for my complicated health situation which was amazing especially given how busy the department was on a Friday afternoon. Going to the lengths of organising rapid appointments to try to alleviate my problems, some of quite long standing, collectively as quickly as possible. One appointment ready before I left for two days time! I am grateful to him and all who were so thoughtful, kind and helpful. Thank you.

Had a colposcopy today and a leep procedure which I had been worried about. The whole experience was made so much better by all the staff present, Didn't really feel a thing because of the lovely staff chatting to me and keeping me distracted. Thank you.

  10. Review titled PALS great service

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 20 February 2023

I wished to praise the excellent responsiveness of PALs. I did not wish to complain, instead just sharing feedback. It was something I reflected on and sought trusted view on that I was not overreacting. PALS’ response was speedy. This is so reassuring and eases any further stress or anxiety. An excellent service, that must minimise stress to medical staff also. I received an excellent response from a lead within an hour and a half. I could not have asked for more. I think I’m responsive in my work role but this has made me think further on how language can really impact how a person raising a concern can feel dependent on response. Thank you for this excellent and essential service.
