  1. Review titled Above and beyond a23

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Chantelle Waddilove - Posted on 19 January 2024

A huge thank you to the outstanding team of nurses and doctors who work tirelessly to meet the needs of women on this ward. From start to finish I was treated with care, understanding and patience. The nurse who cared for me on this date deserves an award. Her proficiency is beyond what I could had asked for. Medication on time and the right amount (she made sure) personalised care, food, blankets, pillow cases. She was incredible. Thank you!

Was so impressed with the care my husband received. Long waits are to be expected and Staff are very busy but they took time to answer questions and keep us informed of progress with tests and results. A big thank you to all the Staff.

My 19 year old daughter went to her GP who advised A&E at QMC we went on a Friday afternoon. Could not have had more attentive and kind staff, who were all obviously very busy. You were never made to feel that you were in the way taking up time, with what turned out to be the flu. Amazing service. Thank you

  5. Review titled everyone doing their best

Rated 3 stars out of 5

on a recent visit to the emergency department following a fall I was impressed with the professionalism of the hard working staff. however it seemed that the system for getting patients from the crowded waiting area was making the job even harder than it was. after patient had been registered they waited to be seen in this chaotic area. staff appeared from several different direction calling out patient names. some loudly some less loud and one or two from behind a mask making their calls impossible to hear. mostly patients were able to respond but several times the callers returned without a patient.some may have left ! but some probably did not hear. older people do have problems with hearing. there were large screens in the area giving information if patients were given a number on registration surely these prominent screens could be used to call them for treatment and even direct them to the appropriate place. this market place type environment does not seem appropriate to the highly professional conduct of the departments staff. These observations come from someone with 40 years NHS service who has nothing but admiration for the staff in this incredible pressurised department.

  6. Review titled A&E has Improved since my last visit.

Rated 5 stars out of 5

Really impressed with my recent visit to A&E after hearing horror stories of people having horrendous waits to be seen. Thankfully, this wasn't the case and I was booked in and triarged,x-rayed and had a consultation with the Emergency Doctor and given appropriate medication all within 4 hours. All the staff I seen were kind and approachable including the Receptionist, triarge staff, radiographers and the doctor.

  7. Review titled Thanks to all the fantastic staff

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Jane Elizabeth Bowden - Posted on 20 December 2023

My husband has had some very disappointing experiences in Queen's over the years, so I was dreading having a planned operation. However, I was very pleasantly surprised. All staff were fantastically caring and pleasant, keeping me informed about what was happening and why etc. Food was good and it was quiet and calm in the ward at night meaning I could get some sleep (something not possible for my husband on the other wards he experienced). Only suggestion for improvement is not to ask people to all come at 7am to Quadu; it was not great to have to wait 7 hours to be called to theatre! Also pre op information/correspondence could have been better. Having been asked if I would accept a date for just before Christmas and agreeing to that, I heard nothing more so rang a number of times to see if was going ahead. I left messages but never got a call back. Eventually, I spoke to someone less than a week before the op who confirmed I was on the list meaning I could make arrangements. I never got anything in writing confirming the op. Apart from that though, it was a very positive experience. Many thanks to all the staff in Quadu, the operating theatre, recovery, C25 and the volunteer who helped my husband find me to take me home - you are all very special people!

Dear Jane Thank you for taking the time to write and share your experience of coming into our hospital for an operation. We’re sorry to hear that in the past your husband has had some bad experiences, but it is good to know that on this occasion things went right and that you felt well cared for during your time with us. We will share your thanks with everyone involved. We are grateful for your understanding about the time you were asked to come in – we will certainly feed this back to the team, however it may not be possible to change this as managing the lists for the day does require all the patients having procedures to be in hospital at the start of the day. Kind regards Andrew Patient Experience Officer

  8. Review titled I was not overly impressed with the treatment

    by antliasx98 - Posted on 11 December 2023

I was not overly impressed with the treatment my child received in this ward, their response was very slow even when my child was on oxygen. The machine would beep endlessly and no-one attended, this did not instill any confidence in me whatsoever. No parent should go through this, watching your child on life support is heartbreaking as it is exacerbated by staff not responding in a timely manner.

  9. Review titled Reassured and home with my family

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 07 December 2023

I attended the qmc gynae department today after I was transported to hospital by ambulance. The sensitive nature of my medical need caused additional anxiety for me but I was immediately put at ease by the ambulance crew who were fantastic, so caring and reassuring I am so thankful to the two paramedics and student paramedic who helped me today in so many ways. When arriving at the hospital I was quickly booked in and taken to a23 where the care continued to be incredible. The staff on a23 consistently ensured I was ok, both physically and emotionally. They explained each stage of the intervention and even when urgent treatment was required via an operation they helped me to relax and feel less anxious. Again the aftercare support was brilliant and the nurse who looked after me was always available, approachable and had such a positive attitude. Thank you so much today for all of your help this could have been a very different experience and I am so grateful for each and every person who helped me today.

  10. Review titled Horrific

Rated 2 stars out of 5

by Helena Craig - Posted on 18 December 2023

Attempted to do the right thing on Saturday night and took my brother who was in excruciating pain to a walk-in centre; were then told to take him to the Emergency Department at Qmc rather than Leicester Royal Infirmary. Booking in was fine, although no attempt was made to contact the walk-in centre to get his triage notes (turned out he had an enormous abscess which needed draining immediately - sepsis hello?!?!), so we sat for 5 hours waiting to be seen. His obs were taken once. He was given paracetamol even though his pain at that point was at a 9/10. The Emergency Department department staff were horrendous. Would call one patient, not get a response, then walk away for another ten minutes before coming back and repeating the same name. My brother was sat on his abscess for five hours. Luckily he was finally seen by a doctor who was less than impressed that my brother hadn’t been bumped to the top of the list - again, sepsis - it seems a bit obvious, and I’m not a medical professional! We were then whisked to the surgery triage unit who were incredible, my family and I absolutely cannot fault them - they were stellar in every way, as were his recovery team in the ear, nose and throat Centre (c24). We were placed in the family room and managed to have a bit of a rest, albeit on the floor, and then the most wonderful catering manager came and spent some time with us, and made my Mum a cup of tea as she had a bit of a wobble (your son being in emergency surgery does that to you). It’s such a shame that the emergency department isn’t ran by competent, empathetic professionals whose priority is supporting their patients - they unfortunately seem resigned to the fact that the department is in disarray and continue to make no attempt at providing adequate care; I even overheard a hca telling another patient that “8 hours isn’t anything, try 16 hours, you’re not the only person whose fed up” Christ. I think the Cqc need to drop-in to the Emergency Department and give it the kick up the back passage it needs!

Dear Helena Thank you for sharing this valuable feedback about your brother’s experience of care at our hospitals. Firstly, we would like to say how glad we were of the positive experience you all had in surgical triage and while your brother recovered on C24. We will be sure to let those teams know the difference they made to everyone involved. We are sorry to hear though that you felt the service your brother received in the Emergency Department was below expectations and that you felt the staff did not offer good care to him as a patient. We will share your feedback with the matron and service manager of the department so that they can know about your brother’s experience during his time with us. If your brother would like to get in touch with us to share more details about his experience himself, he is welcome to do so, he can email us at QMCPET@nuh.nhs.uk. If there are ongoing concerns he can also contact our PALS service at PALS@nuh.nhs.uk.
