  1. Review titled Acute Medical Rapid Assessment ward at Queens Medical Centre

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Vicki - Posted on 17 April 2024

Arrived at Amra at 9am, left at 8pm. In the intervening time, saw doctors and had tests between 9 and around 2pm. There then followed 6 hours of waiting to be discharged (without a prescription- that would have taken even longer). The doctors changed shifts at 4pm, and did no handover at all for my dad. When a consultant came to see us at 8pm, we had to brief him. Cannot believe we waited so long and don’t understand why the original doctors didn’t finish their work and discharge my dad at 4pm. Between 4pm and 8pm, the nurses did observations, handover and huge amount of chasing of the doctors - all of it time that would have been saved if the original doctors had started the discharge before leaving shift. A huge waste of time, and back tomorrow to pick up the prescription, as couldn’t face waiting longer today. There are not enough doctors on a ward that is mainly General practice referrals. Surely in a ward where general practice don’t know the answers, there should be a lot of doctors and consultants? This ward is mainly staffed by nurses with a handful of doctors - so how can that lead to rapid assessment?. I heard one nurse tell a patient ‘ I tell everyone to expect to spend at least 6 hours here’. If patients were processed quicker, less nurses would be needed to keep doing their observations, and fielding the constant demands from patients and relatives (myself included) asking where is the doctor, and when can I go home? This department needs someone to manage the doctors, have them complete their work, and spend time with the patients to get them out of the door quicker it is basic process management and ownership that is needed to avoid wasted time and associated expense. Treating patients quicker and having consistency of doctor between asking for tests to discharge would also improve patient outcomes. As I said to the doctor finally discharging us, when he asked me why the other doctor had paused certain tablets ‘I am not a doctor’. What I do know is a poor process when I see one and a staff mix (doctor vs nurse ratio) that isn’t set up for successful outcomes or efficiency. As we left the hospital, we walked through A&E which was packed out, and with ambulance drivers queuing with patients. Not right that my dad was in a bed in Amra desperate to leave, whilst others were needing it. One final point, why, why do both ambulance staff wait with the patient? Surely one could wait with 2 patients, leaving 3 others to go back on the road?

Dear Vicki Thank you for sharing feedback regarding your father’s recent experience on AMRA at QMC. As a unit we always strive to ensure that patients have a positive experience whilst in our care and we understand that longs waits can lead to frustrations particularly when patients/relatives feel that we are not providing an efficient service due to lack of communication regarding patient care and management. As the Ward Manager I am sorry to hear that you felt the discharge process to be lacking. Patient/relative feedback is valued within our service as it aids with looking at service improvement and learning from concerns raised and focusing on improved outcomes for patient care within the unit. As a service we are focusing on service improvement within the unit to provide an enhanced patient experience and improved patient outcomes in particular the flow in and out of the unit to support improved discharge times. As part of the service improvement plans we encourage feedback from relatives/patients and look for patients/relatives to contribute and be part of our focus groups as a patient representative. Based on your recent experience within our unit if you would like to become a patient representative we can provide you with all the necessary information for you to sign up to undertake this role. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for taking the time to identify and raise the concerns you experienced in order for us as a team to learn and improve our service. If you would like to discuss these points further and have a full written response please contact the pals service at PALS@nuh.nhs.uk and they will raise this concern for you with the department. Kind regards, Michelle – AMRA Ward manager

  2. Review titled The best birth experience

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Ruth Snowden - Posted on 20 May 2024

I honestly cannot recommend the wonderful midwives working in triage, induction and labour suites. I had the most wonderful birth experience delivering my first child. I was induced, which I was a little apprehensive about but the midwife was an absolute star despite being incredibly busy on a full suite and I began contacting soon after. Once transferred onto labour suite I had another lovely midwife who was considerate and listened to me throughout, we even had a nice chat once I was comfortable with my pain relief. When her shift was over she went out of her way to ensure the midwife taking over was the same one I had for my induction. I wish I could name these two midwives because they are both such assets to QMC. Thank you so much for helping me bring my beautiful daughter into the world.

  4. Review titled Great concerns

Rated 1 star out of 5

Daughter left for hours before being treated. Extremely overworked staff leaving patients wherever they could. Absolutely filthy hospital and disappointing experience. Ward staff were rude and uncooperative and very kittle people could answer questions to help.

  5. Review titled Great service and health professionals

Rated 5 stars out of 5

On the early hours of April 6th I had an incident that left me with a fracture of the right distal radius, soon after this happen I went to the emergency department at Queens Medical Centre hospital, where I was treated very well by all the people from Injuries, later on that day I had to come back for manipulation of my fracture, and there again had an excellent treatment by all the people around the Orthopaedics emergency department and Radiology emergency department Service. After that I got an appointment the following Monday at the Fracture Clinic, where I saw the Orthopaedic Consultant that also gave an excellent treatment and gave me a clear explanation of the reason of the surgery. On April 10th, I had to go again to the Hospital for my surgery at qadu, again every single person from the Receptionist, Nurses, Porter, Anaesthesist and Orthopaedic Surgeon did a great job. I just wanted to say thank you for your great work and professionalism.

  7. Review titled Excellent Care

Rated 5 stars out of 5

I was referred to QMC for a specialist operation to remove part of my thyroid. From the initial telephone booking, through surgeon consultation, pre-op assessment and subsequent admission and operation, I could not fault the care given by everyone that was dealing with me. Surgeon, anaesthetists, recovery room nurse and ward nurses, doctor, clerical staff and not forgetting the hospitality staff and also the cleaners who kept the place spotless, I would like to say a huge thank you to everybody for your kindness and care.

I arrived at the QMC A&E at around 6am after advice from NHS 111 about continuous chest pain. I was seen within minutes, had blood pressure tests, an ECG, blood tests and an X-ray. I was then seen by a Doctor who confirmed I was fine. From start to finish the care I received was first class and seamlessly organised. Thank you 🙏
