  1. Review titled A tale of two cities

Rated 4 stars out of 5

by Dave Brown - Posted on 15 August 2024

13 hours on site, reception at 0715hrs was great, ward nurses station were eager but my 3 only need one! The long wait then ensued. First to visit was to order my post Op snack - I ordered the Tuna Mayo in brown(more later). Next came the Consultant and I renewed our happy acquaintance and the anaesthetist was perfunctory. Then came the star of my visit, my Admin Lead (N) (5 stars for you my dear). My appointed nurse then visited to intimate that I may be going up sooner than planned. It didn’t happen ultimately 10 mins late. Pre-Op was great (well done “blue job”) but the anaesthetist spoiled it. I’ve had several “generals” before but none pumped in with such vigour that made me shout out!! I don’t know where his mind was, but he certainly made an impression on me, oh and my vein didn’t burst! Lights out for 90mins. Recovery was a bit of an experience; all seemed very hectic and in my discombobulating memory it all seemed very parochial and lacking in leadership. I was returned to my room. Water and warm beverages. freeview TV. Admin Nurse (N) continued her great service and when I felt well enough I asked for the sandwich!! It came and was slightly underwhelming in its presentation, a plate with a lightly mayo’d tuna filled sandwich in two very thick slices of brown bread! Now it was likely the after effects of the general that made my mouth so dry, but I really couldn’t eat more than a bite a minute. As previously the mayo was minimal so the lubricity of the mouthful was lacking. Only managed 3 of the quarters. Then the gastronomic high light, not sure if I should have got this as an NhS referral! But the Vanilla ice cream in a glass was just what I needed! My next hurdle was same day return home! One of the conditions was a pee in the six hours post Op. now having fasted since the previous day, only having had about 500mls before the Op and then only managing about 1000mls post op, it felt like my body was absorbing everything I drank. With 60 mins left before a guaranteed overnight stay I tamped down a good glug of water and waited. 12 mins to go and I buzzed for the “witness”, conscious that my AdminNurse (N) was off shift in 42 mins! They came and winessed the 346ml and I got the green light! Home time. Full after care explainer well delivered, no post op review with my consultant, 3 weeks wait for that! Also it appears that NhS referees can’t book for weekend stitch removals and that they are only an option for private and paying! So likely gonna be a self removal or a GP at 13 days rather than 10 (as recommended!) pity about those coincidental Bank Holidays!! All in all decent, Admin Nurses’s (N) great service almost made me forget the anaesthetist, but he still gets a shout out here like he got from me in Pre Op, so he can’t go with out a mention! slow down man; I didn’t make your lunch date late!!

  2. Review titled wonderful staff

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Marion Cutforth - Posted on 22 July 2024

Everyone involved in my surgery was kind, considerate and cheerful, no-one enjoys an operation but having great people around you does help to settle the nerves and make the best of the situation. I could not have been better looked after.

  3. Review titled Poor Experience & lack of good culture is my overall feeling

Rated 1 star out of 5

by MR KEITH WILSON - Posted on 29 August 2024

Poor booking in system with 2 changes, taken through 'back-lot' to my cell which had a threadbare chair and trolley/bed with rust. Questions over local or general anaethesia, given a support garment that was far too large and thus supported nothing, left two hours awaiting take home medications and had to chase. Then had phone call when I got home as I'd been issued with someone else's medication. Finally after a while, I had to go my GP as my wound was gaping and oozing. I did not receive any guidance neither on wound care which probably didn't help. The whole process felt like a chicken processing plant rather than personal care. I think it's a problem from the top, not individuals as it was just general chaos and dis-organised.

  5. Review titled Contempt for NHS referred patients

Rated 2 stars out of 5

by Mrs Hare - Posted on 01 June 2024

I arrived early for my appointment (an NHS referral) at Fitzwilliam Hospital and gave my details to the receptionist. She then told me the appointment had been cancelled! No ifs buts or maybes! She said she was a trainee and would check with her colleague. Said colleague said the consultant wasn’t in today!! Then said he was ill and appointment was cancelled 3 days earlier by the NHS!! I felt as though I was being treated with disregard as an NHS referred patient. The decent thing would have been a phone call or text or email to me actually letting me know the appointment was cancelled. Fitzwilliam hospital have all my contact details after all as you have to fill these out online! Having been a private healthcare patient most of my working life (now retired) I had often wondered if NHS referred patients were treated differently if referred privately. Unfortunately I now have the answer and my first experience was appalling. I now have to wait over a month for a new appointment and will phone the hospital on the day to make sure the appointment is still going ahead as at my age my time is precious and I do deserve to be treated with respect and informed of cancelled appointments. Not great experience so far.

  6. Review titled Very impressive

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Christine Hughes - Posted on 04 April 2024

The service today was second to none. All of the staff were absolutely wonderful and so caring and the surgery was so impressive, with all staff doing their utmost to make my stay so good. The hospital was very comfortable and pristine. My surgeon was so caring and explained everything to me and it couldn't have been better. I would like to thank my surgeon and the anesthetist and all of the rest of the staff who helped me so much.

  7. Review titled Wonderful Care

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Bridget Beney - Posted on 18 April 2024

Fantastic! I was nervous about cataract surgery but from the moment I arrived I felt reassured. All the nurses who gave pre-op care were thoroughly professional and kind. The nurse who stayed with me during surgery was a really lovely person (who insisted on holding my hand!). My surgeon was amazing. Made sure I had a painless procedure and made me relaxed by having a lovely sense of humour. He was outstanding and 2 days later I have no pain and am actually able to see without glasses! I was an NHS patient but at no time did I feel like a second class citizen. Thank you to all involved. Can't praise you highly enough.

  8. Review titled Outstanding!

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Bridget Beney - Posted on 31 May 2024

Outstanding care shown by the during the whole process of my cataract surgery from the initial assessment, throughout the operation and during the follow up after care. Thank you to all the hospital staff but especially to the wonderful surgeon, his warm and caring opthalmic nurse and to the lovely nurse who insisted on holding my hand during my operation. What a team! At no time did I ever feel like a second class citizen because I was NHS. It is a joy to be able to see clearly again. Can't wait to have the second eye done later this year. I would highly recommend cataract surgery to be done at the Fitzwilliam Hospital.

  9. Review titled Appalling consultation

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 11 April 2024

My Husband was referred here as an NHS patient following an MRI scan after living with chronic sciatic pain due to a large prolapse at L5. The consultant was running 30 minutes late and was heard loudly complaining at the main reception desk that he had been given to many NHS patients to see. After hearing this and witnessing this attitude, we already had low expectations for the consultation. Once finally called through, the consultant openly declared he was in a bad mood. He clearly didn’t have time for us. My husband wanted time and space to discuss his options but wasnt given this. There was a clear disregard and lack of compassion towards him. NHS patients clearly treated differently despite the fact that the Fitzwilliam are commissioned by the NHS to provide these services and receive NHS funding to do so. We are now returning to our GP to ask to be referred elsewhere. We will not be returning to the Fitzwilliam for my Husbands care.

  10. Review titled Bad Experience

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 18 March 2024

After travelling on 3 buses to get to my appt, and being advised that the consultant was running 30 mins late, I asked reception if there was anywhere to purchase a coffee, she advised ‘no sorry’…… only to witness Premium Private paying patients were in a separate lounge drinking complimentary coffee/tea!!!!! I was made to feel downcast and ‘not good enough’. This I believe is discriminatory between Private and NHS patients, disgusting behaviour in this day and age!!!
