Review titled Successful emergency appendectomy
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Kerstin Langdon - Posted on 06 June 2023
I was fortunate to be treated and operated on at Derriford for a very angry and therefore painful appendix, which was removed by keyhole surgery on the morning of 5th June 2023. From the minute I was picked up by the ambulance on Friday late afternoon to my going home on Monday afternoon my professional treatment both as a person and a patient has been exemplary. At no time did I feel like a number. I am not allowed to mention names here so I won’t but from the arrival on Level 7 in surgical assessment unit in bed h6 to departure from bed f1 in surgical recovery I was cared for by an amazingly dedicated and compassionate team from the ambulance crews on arrival to the cleaners and porters up to the nurses, doctors and consultants on call the night I arrived and my subsequent stay and surgery until Monday afternoon. I was nil by mouth until midnight Saturday/Sunday, so when it became clear, in the interest of my safety, I was not to be operated on that night, the female registrar who made the decision at the point of witching hour was visibly relieved I was happy with her assessment of the situation but still kept apologising. We even had a chuckle about the fact how much it hurts when she pushed down on my appendix and rapidly releasing to diagnose me at 1 am the night before, which was confirmed by scan Saturday 9am. I was more interested in having a cup of tea and biscuits because my discomfort was so well managed I was ravenous and hankering for food by then, I was so unwell all through Saturday I did not miss it, which I was allowed until 3am as surgery was definitely happening first thing Sunday am which it duly did. I enjoyed my food after the surgery and into Monday afternoon. The nurse on duty on both my nights in f1 makes a mean cuppa, thank you. The nurse who fought my corner and insisted my cannula be changed and the nurse who was tasked to find another vein, thank you. In all I recon about 40 to 50 people ensured all aspects of my stay went without a hitch and were utterly professional and never showed how exhausted they must have been at times. I cannot thank you enough, thank you Yes I kept being bumped down the list due to serious unforeseen emergencies but I was monitored and at no point did I feel unsafe. You have to put up with a lot of not so nice people who are unable to see you are trying to help and not inconvenience them but you stay cheerful and carry on. Yes, the system is flawed but you are not. Myself and my family and dogs thank you

Review titled Care was exceptional
by Charlottexv23 - Posted on 20 June 2023
My little girl was admitted following a trip to paediatric an and e, then taken to CAU, before having a night in HDU then a night on woodcock…. Her care was exceptional, yes we had to wait to see the consultant, but the nurses were superb! Very kind, caring and brilliant with my little girl… she’s 4 and never been poorly before so we were all terrified as she was a very poorly little girl but they all were really amazing! I would like to shout out all the staff who took personal care of her & me as I was a wreck at some points!

Review titled How can the consultant's surname be confidential?
by j-plymouth - Posted on 26 May 2023
I was phoned by a member of staff from Moorgate Ward at Derriford Hospital with helpful information about a cordless phone number that can be used to reach patients (including my family member who is on the ward). They told me that the consultant would phone me to give me progress on the patient. I asked what was the consultants name and was told just their first name. I asked for the surname and was told that they were unable to tell me for reasons of confidentiality. Isn't that silly? If I need to ask to contact the consultant at the hospital I need their surname. How can the consultant's surname be in any way confidential?

Thank you for contacting us and leaving a review. I am glad that the staff were able to provide information about the cordless phone which can be used to communicate with relatives on the ward. In regard to the consultant's surname, I am not aware of a reason why the surname could not have been given out, unless if the consultant wanted to discuss this with you over the phone. I am more than happy for the ward to be contacted again and, if you ask for the nurse in charge, we will be able to give this information out and will be able to chase the consultant conversation to ensure that this happens. Kind regards, Phoebe Haigh Ward Manager Moorgate Ward

Review titled Great A&E staff.
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 27 May 2023
The staff in the A&E department are friendly and obviously dedicated to their work. I saw good judgement in prioritising those triaged on coming into the hospital. Although a busy summer day, the public in the waiting room were very decent. Referred by a GP, I was quickly moved through the system receiving ECG, blood tests, an X-ray and a consultation with a doctor in a matter of four hours. I found the staff to be considerate and patient. The department needs more funding. The waiting room is too small a space for the number of patients. Being able to stand comfortably, I did so for several hours, however there were patients sitting on the floor who often caused obstruction to the check-in desk. The NHS staff were really firing on all cylinders and I received good care. There were volunteers present who helped to welcome new patients into the hospital.

On behalf of Derriford Hospital Emergency Department I would like to thank you for your kind review dated 29th May 2023. It is always nice to receive positive feedback from patients. I will make sure the teams in the Emergency Department are aware of your kind words. Hearing such positive feedback really helps. I am sorry to hear you had to stand whilst waiting for further assessment. We are looking at ways we can increase our waiting area space. We have also started building works for our new Emergency Department which will be able to accommodate our increasing number of admissions. Thank you again for taking the time to comment. It is very much appreciated. I hope you are safe and recovered well. Jayde Fletcher Emergency Services Support Manager

Unfortunately the contact details for you on the Cardiology system did not appear to be up-to-date. The consultant concerned could not get through at the time stipulated for your appointment so rebooking has been requested. However, our PALS team were able to contact you on the number listed on our Patient Information System (iPM), so I can only apologise that the oversight appears to be on the clinician’s part in this instance, but we will look to expedite your rebooking for the next available slot. Thank you for taking the time to get in touch. Paul Smith Clinical Admin Manager for Cardiology
