Review titled Rushed, rude and unkind
Rated 2 stars out of 5
by Mrs S.H - Posted on 22 June 2024
Had laser for diabetic retinopathy, second appointment, first was with a kind and patient Doctor who took time to explain and allowed me to stop for a few seconds and todays experience was like polar opposite, Consultant was rude, inpatient and the experience has left me anxious about any further treatment I may need, asked for a break & instead they stopped the treatment became annoyed and didn't attempt to hide there contempt for me. The whole thing was rushed and I was showed little compassion. They showed 0 understanding, did nothing to ally my anxiety and did infact make the whole situation much more unpleasant than it needed to be. I hope I don't require anymore treatment and if I do I am not seen by this person.

Review titled Outstanding
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Raymond Konyn - Posted on 25 June 2024
Cataract surgery. Probably like most patients, I was nervous and anxious as I detest anyone messing around with my eyes. From the moment I stepped through the door on arrival to departure, the care, attention and professionalism conducted by the team at all levels was outstanding. Clearly some excellent training has been provided. I can't say that I would look forward to going back for the other eye, but if I do, I hope it will be the same team. National Health Service at its best, thank you.

It's pretty disappointing that the website doesn't give a contact number for the Ophthalmology Department at Bexhill. What possible reason can there be for this? Come on guys!

Review titled Excellent service
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 19 November 2023
I was given an appointment for a visual field test on a Sunday morning and am extremely grateful to all the staff involved for working weekends to enable patients to be seen quickly. It is very worrying to be called for extra tests and being able to have them carried out promptly, without waiting weeks, is very helpful.

Review titled Brutal and unkind
Rated 1 star out of 5
by Trish - Posted on 20 July 2023
I was informed in no uncertain terms that my eye health had deteriorated following a brutal eye exam .I am a retired nurse and have glaucoma, I have undergone numerous exams so know when someone is uncaring.I was told my optic nerves were very damaged and to go to A and E if I had a bad headache and visual problems .I was then told I did not need surgery, keep taking the drops and come back in 6 months ! No opportunity ask a question. No summary of my scans ,field tests or medication .

Dear Trish, We are concerned to hear of your poor experience during your attendance to the Ophthalmology Department at Bexhill Hospital. This is certainly not how we would wish any patient to feel, as each patient should feel well cared for and that they have been given the opportunity to discuss any concerns they may have over their condition. We are disappointed to learn that this was not the case during your consultation. Should you wish to discuss this matter further with a member of the Patient Experience Team, then please contact 0300 131 4784 or email esh-tr.PatientExperience@nhs.net

Review titled Still waiting to be contacted
Rated 3 stars out of 5
by P Desvaux de Marigny - Posted on 18 January 2024
I was referred in May 2023 for cataract surgery and was told the waiting list was approximately 4 months, we are now in month 8 and I am yet to be contacted for an appointment/surgery. Needless to say my cataracts are very advanced now. Very disappointing.

Review titled An Eye Opener
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Kenneth Moore - Posted on 23 April 2023
This week I saw the consultant at the conclusion of a series of Eyelea injections. I wanted to say that my experience at this hospital department really opened my eyes to the wonderful proffesionalism of staff and the cheery demeanour with which they perform. I had heard so much negative talk about the NHS which was so incorrect. Thank you to all for making a daunting experience a positive one for which I am very grateful.

Review titled Excellent in every way
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Fiona Cullen-Skowronski - Posted on 10 February 2023
This evening am enjoying the reassurance and guidance I received today after the very thorough testing of my eyes at the Ophthalmology department at Bexhill Hospital. The time between the opticians referring me and the appointment was less than a week. I arrived early and bought a lovely coffee from a kind volunteer at the snack bar. Then a nurse called me in for a sight test. There was no delay. She and her colleague were warm and professional and cheery. After that, another nurse took me for a scan. Very soon after that the consultant called me in to check my eyes with some super equipment. He was very professional but also very kind and patient, including when I confused looking right with looking left. He was very thorough, doing the tests again after a ten-minute break for new drops to start working. Afterwards, he explained very clearly what was wrong. He used the medical term followed by an explanation in laymen's language. I feel totally reassured and I know how to recognize if retina may have detached and therefore to contact them. I now know what to tell friends of my age when they are concerned about floaters in their eyes, how to recognize when it might be a detached retina. I learned a lot today. Am very grateful for the swift, professional, very kind care. And what a comfortable place to be. Lovely chairs to sit in. No freezing air conditioning. All the staff very calm. The receptionists also were very kind.

Dear Fiona, Thank you for taking the time to provide such positive feedback following your recent attendance to the Ophthalmology Clinic at Bexhill Hospital. It was pleasing read that the entire team from the volunteer, to the nursing staff, consultant and reception team all played their part and worked cohesively to provide a high level of care to you. Patients should feel confident in the care they are receiving and we are pleased this was evident on your visit and that you have been fully informed on how to recognise when it might be a detached retina. Please be assured that your heartfelt feedback will be shared with the staff involved.
