    On 14th September 2024, I had an appointment with the Ophthalmology department in Barnsley District General Hospital. The receptionists on duty were efficient and greeted me as soon as I approached the reception desk. I confirmed my name, DOB and address and was asked to take a seat. A few minutes later my name was called and I followed the lady on reception into an examining room. The process of my appointment was started and and I could find no fault with what followed. My treatment was completed and roughly two hours later I was on my way home. Thank you very much Barnsley District General Hospital, for the care your staff took of me. Brilliant service. From a very satisfied patient.

    Your message Compliment for Barnsley District Hospital Clinic Date: 28/08/2024. Dept: Ophthalmology. On the 28th August 2024, I had an appointment in the afternoon at Barnsley District General Hospital for a glaucoma check. I was asked to arrive half an hour early and I complied with the request. I signed in and was asked to take a seat. A few minutes later my name was called and I followed a member of staff into an examining room. I was then asked again to take a seat and my name would be called. This procedure continued for other examination tests in different rooms. The last room I visited was to see the doctor, Mohamed Awwad. My appointment was for 1/4 to 3 and I was seen by the doctor not many minutes after that time, I was most impressed. In fact, I was most impressed by the whole procedure, all staff were pleasant and made me feel at ease. The entire process flowed. On the 03/09/2024, I received an email from the hospital confirming the outcome of the appointment which informed me that this letter had been sent to my doctor with all the relevant information. This letter was beautifully presented with all the relevant information laid out. So, many thanks for the efficient and flawless patient appointment, I could find no fault with the entire procedure.     The staff were very supportive and gave good advice but they seemed a little frightened by the senior nurse. When mistakes occurred (several times) the staff were excellent at trying to get it fixed but had to try again and again to get things right. I was told things that could not be true by a doctor which was very upsetting. The care was very good, they had just got a new machine which worked better than the previous machine. They used a very expensive drug for the care. There was usually two nurses just looking after one person and even the grumpy one was lovely. They looked after all the symptoms well and were helpful when any pain or anxiety started. Their behaviour did change when the senior nurse came on and started telling people that they were making mistakes. It was upsetting to watch a nurse being told off right next to the bed. The staff nurse was really professional and continued to smile and was kind despite this. The feeling was that the ITU is moderately dysfunctional but that the staff work hard to make sure that this does not impact patient care.

    Efficient, empathetic, caring and exact diagnosis-the department here is second to none. From the first check in and registration through to the short waiting and actual consultation then treatment, it's impossible to think of how it can be better!

  5. Review titled Emotional

    I became emotional about my son’s illness and several errors in his care that whilst caused distress thankfully no harm. When I raised my concerns I was told that the staff do not like it when a person becomes emotional. I am of course sorry for saying that I want the mistake to be put right. I am sorry for saying that the staff member should give me a moment so I am not upset before they carried on. I am really sorry for saying that I was upset and needed someone to reassure me. The only person who suffered from me getting upset is my son. I understand that its no longer acceptable for a person to become emotional. I will try to learn my lesson today and recognise that people cannot cope with talking to an upset person. I will communicate in writing! I hope this message will help other people who face the worst moments in their life to walk away when the itu makes a mistake and get someone to write to them

  6. Review titled Great ICU care

    Had nearly a week in ICU after attending A&E and they saved my life. The care has been outstanding, staff couldn’t do enough, caring, attentive, patient. Communication was outstanding and the speed of diagnosis and testing could not have been any quicker. All staff from consultants to the cleaning staff need a medal. Thank you

    Tried to phone the Breast Screening Department repeatedly, actually 21 times so far, and have been unable to get through to speak to anyone. A recorded message says if you want to cancel an appointment to leave a message, or for any other reason to call the department during office hours. And, that's what I have been doing, calling, and calling, and calling, within office hours, but nobody picks up the phone. This is not helpful, especially when patients are worried, or upset, or need specific help or advice regarding an upcoming appointment. Ditto, for the Breast Care Nurses, nobody picks up the phone. When I have been in the waiting room at a previous appointment, I was stood there for ages and was just ignored for the reception staff. Not great really is it?

    Ward 24 staff were very kind and considerate they treated me with dignity and respect, were very professional. I felt very confident they were doing everything they could to help me recover. I can’t thank them enough they are a fantastic team of people.

    I just want to say how impressed I was with the care that my mother received within the hospital. All of the staff that she/we interacted with were superb. I brought her to A&E late morning and she was passed through numerous facilities. The nurses, Drs, therapist, porters, radiologist, staff in all of the areas were fantastic. I was particularly impressed with the staff in the frailty seating beds (AMU?). Everyone in there (patients) were elderly and the staff were patient and kind. The clinicians spoke to the patients at the same eye level by Kneeling on one knee, and they listened to the patients without closing them down abruptly (I know that my mother certainly can drone on a lot) - again superb, this shows that they respect their patients. Many thanks - your staff are doing a super job.

    10/07/24, endoscopy ward, colonoscopy. Everything went well from pre-meds,reception,procedure.recovery and discharge.All the teams were very good.The staff were courteous,competent and professional and I am grateful for their services and time.I would recommend Barnsley Hospital generally as a very good hospital.
