Review titled Dreadful Experience
Rated 1 star out of 5
by David Peacock - Posted on 15 March 2023
I attended as an emergency private patient with an abscess on a tooth which has previously had root canal treatment on it. I explained to the receptionist that I wanted to find out my options and was told that the dentist will explain all my options once I had an examination. I paid £66 to book the appointment. On arrival I was seen quickly, however within 10 seconds it was clear to me that I was a form of income and not a patient. He had a 10 second fumble around my mouth with his fingers with no equipment used. He then proceeded to tell me that my tooth had to come out and this was before any X-rays taken. I said to him that I was told by your receptionist I would be given all my options before I decided what I wanted to do. He abruptly replied that I didn’t have any options and the tooth had to be removed. Furthermore he continued to explain that I would have to have 2 crowns either side of the abscesses tooth and a bridge fitted at a cost of between £3/4,000. When I explained that I’ve done a bit of research and there is a reroot canal treatment he just dismissed this. By this time it became clear to him that I wouldn’t be taken advantage of whilst being vulnerable and in pain. He simply said, do you want antibiotics? I said yes. At this point he decided to do X-rays on my whole mouth which surprised me until I got the bill. I then waited for the X-rays which confirmed the abscess, however unperturbed he had a final push for the big treatment before i again suggested the reroot canal direction. Sensing a lost cause he eventually told me that this could be done for a cost of £1,000. The final sting in the tail was a bill for £251 including a £65 charge for antibiotics that I could have got for free from the NHS. Today I’ve just received an email reminding me that my routine dental check up is due. My advice for this and any dentist is do your homework.

Dear Mr Peacock, I am writing in response to your review above. Firstly we would like to apologise that you have not been satisfied with your visit to Collingham Dental Practice. We have reviewed your case and can report the following: You called our practice requesting an urgent appointment due to pain from a tooth. We explained we are not accepting NHS patients, and how it would work to be seen as a patient on our Independent scheme. We made an initial charge for your urgent consultation, which was discussed before booking, as well as explaining potential costs for xrays which may be necessary. On attending we completed your examination and xrays, and discussed options for treatment for the problematic tooth. One of these options was to extract the problem tooth, and at the same time we would normally discuss options to fill the resulting gap. We did so in your case, including discussing the expected costs of such treatment. We feel it is reasonable, when discussing potential treatment, to provide an indication of the costs involved so you can make an informed decision. Your tooth presented with a very large infection on a previously root treated tooth. While we discussed with you options for re-root treating the tooth, our dentist recommended to extract the tooth due to the size of the infection present and the potential success of a re-root treatment in your dentist's opinion. We recommended a course of action, but discussed all relevant options. You decided at the time to not proceed with any treatment options, and we offered the option of a prescription of antibiotics to help you in the short term while you considered your options. As you were seen as an Independent patient, we issued this prescription Independently, and a charge was raised for this. We discussed this charge before providing the antibiotics, and you had the opportunity to decline if you did not wish to pay a charge for this. The only charges we therefore made were for your examination and xrays, and the prescription. At all times we abided by your decisions about what treatment you would like to proceed with, and our aim was to provide you with treatment options and expected costs for you to decide what you would like to do. We regret that our treatment options were not something you wished to proceed with. Yours Sincerely Collingham Dental Practice

"Dear Patient, Are you sure it is us?? We have examined your review, and we can report that we do not recognise the details included in your review. At no point have we ever proposed to conduct an extraction for a cost of £1200. As we do not have any identifying information, we cannot explain what has been proposed. However, it is likely that the figure relates to a course of treatment of multiple items, which may have included an extraction. We note also that your comment appears to relate to care provided at our practice Independently, not through the NHS. We apologise that you have not been satisfied with the service we have provided. Without any way of identifying your case specifically, we can't advise further, but if you wish to contact us on 01636 893477, we can advise further. Yours Sincerely Collingham Dental Practice"
