  2. Review titled poor access for disabled patients

Rated 4 stars out of 5

The public lift was broken so my 83 year old mother with dementia and I were directed to a staff lift to get downstairs to the bone clinic. So far so good. We went down in the lift them a long corridor and through a door to an unattended waiting room. Another disabled old lady came out of the treatment room, she asked which way to the lift, I went to help her but the door was locked, I had to find an administrator who was working in the scanning room. She directed the lady through the door to the lift. ‘Sorted’, I thought. However on leaving the treatment room after Mum’s scan (all great, thank you to the busy radiographer ) we were like the previous elderly lady, abandoned to either face the locked door or stairs- I went back in and only after asking her to, the administrator came out again, I asked her if the door could be left unlocked for other disabled patients to leave after their appointments. I got a frosty, slightly offended response, that the code couldn’t be given out, which totally missed the point. This is page 1.01 ableism. This person could not understand what it might be like for a frail and or disabled person to be left, in a deserted waiting area with no means of exit. The clinical member of staff was rightly busy with her work. I’m furious, I’m a supporter of clinical and ancillary staff and sympathetic to the difficult conditions they find themselves in but this was nothing to do with resourcing (though the broken lift might be). It’s about caring.
